Since 2014 I’ve asked our clients to complete a post-trip survey to gather feedback about our guides, locations, meals, and curriculum, plus their overall satisfaction. Reviewing the results is a time commitment — this year the document runs for 138 pages, plus a few more pages of tables with quantitative data! But it’s entirely worthwhile, as clients confirm what we’re doing right and give me a checklist of improvements for the next season.
The 2023 survey was taken by 405 clients, an astounding 79 percent response rate. Confidence in these results should be high, then.
Overall Satisfaction
The first question in the survey is the most important: “Overall, how satisfied are you with your experience?”
I’ve asked this exact question since the beginning, and on a 5-star scale the results have been:
- 2023: 4.81
- 2022: 4.82
- 2021: 4.88
- 2020: 4.88
- 2019: 4.92
- 2018: 4.81
- 2017: 4.88
- 2016: no trips
- 2015: 4.90
- 2014: 4.85
These scores have been remarkably consistent through the years, with just a 0.11 spread between the lowest-rated and highest-rated years.
Testimonials from 2023
At the end of our annual client survey, we ask clients to provide a testimonial. Of our 2023 alumni, 204 did. I will share them all here, to thank our clients for being so flattering and to leave no doubt with prospective clients that our program is truly extraordinary. You can also read an additional 262 testimonials from 2022, 179 from 2021, 76 from 2020 and 110 from 2019.

Andrew’s backpacking adventures live up to all the superlatives. I have just finished my second trip and have been blown away each time by the experience. The groups have been very well matched and the practical skills learned on the trail are all taught in a logical, rational and patient manner by total stud experienced guides. Every day brought new challenges, new demands, and new decisions, and even though I was challenged physically, each day was incredibly rewarding and fun. I would not hesitate to recommend joining a group to any of my friends and family. I typically spend the rest of the year reminiscing about the experience, and wowing other backpackers with stories of how light my pack was and the ground we covered. The skills I have acquired have dramatically increased my confidence to take my backpacking to the next level. -Eric S.
This year marked my second Skurka trip, building on years of personal backpacking experience. Through his program, I’ve enhanced my off-trail navigation ability, refined my gear, gained confidence on third- and fourth-class terrain, and absorbed softer skills like managing group dynamics, all learning from the example of world-class guides. But beyond these tangible benefits, Andrew’s trips have a secret sauce that makes the whole greater than the sum of its parts and keeps me looking for excuses to come back. I’m already looking forward to next year! -Taryn F.
ASA trips are niche and special within the guiding world in three main ways. 1) This is an education program with an adventure element, and you will come out a more skilled and versatile backpacker. 2) Andrew is able to attract a team of guides that have ridiculous credentials. It’s like going to Rock n Roll Fantasy Camp for ultrarunners/thru hikers. 3) These guys take the training wheels off. Because of the extensive work that goes into matching groups and preparing participants, you can do some interesting things that you may have been unlikely to try on your own. Because of the unique nature of these trips, I think they attract a group of likeminded people. If you think this is the tribe that you want to be a part of, you’re probably right. -Carla B.
It was like a college course taught by the most qualified guides on Earth in some of the most beautiful settings in North America. -Matt H.
My trip was absolutely life changing – the only bad part was being so sad that it was all over! My guides were exceptionally knowledgeable, experienced, and kind. The trip planning course, in-trip curriculum, meals, group matching, and route were all clearly thought out and were well executed. I got to complete a trip that I could never have done on my own, and I leave with new skills that I am already using as I consider future trips. This was the trip of a lifetime for me and something special that I’ll remember forever. I can’t wait to start saving to come back someday! -Megan M.
As a first time backpacker, I can’t imagine a more comprehensive option to learn what it takes to be a successful camper on the trail. The fundamentals trip was well planned with time for group style teaching and ongoing conversation throughout. This is all after the online classroom learning months beforehand to build up knowledge of what can be expected and how to prepare to be on the trail with only a pack on your back. The guides were second to none and the whole experience exceeded my expectations. From gear to weather to navigation, you can expect to learn everything you need to know to have the best chance for a successful trip. -Seth O.
Skurka’s guided trips give you a great opportunity to see difficult-to-access parts of the world with highly experienced and well-informed guides. They’re also an excellent value for the price. Your peers on the trips are likely to be exceptional and fascinating people. -James L.
Two different locations, two different states and I’m still looking forward to more. Andrew and his team do such an incredible job of making backpacking accessible, rewarding and life changing. I consider myself a capable backpacker but still crave the connection and adventure that comes from a guided trip. From start to finish, planning course to final day in the field, these trips are fulfilling in a way that I cannot explain. You’ll learn to pack and plan at home and then apply these skills to the field while also taking in unique and protected lands. You meet like minded individuals and make lifelong bonds. Worth the investment every time. -Brit K.
Extremely highly recommended. Highest quality guides, locations, training, client matching, and overall planning both before the trip and in the field. I’ve done three trips now and they’ve all exceeded expectations. -Randy C.
Skurka’s programs, guides, and curriculum are all-time best in the industry. The focus on ultralight gear and off-trail travel should appeal to all that truly want to get the most of their wilderness experience. As a person with above average time in the wilderness, I was able to gain additional skills, experience, and confidence that will help me push my boundaries for a lifetime. -Greg M.
I can’t believe how much my knowledge, skill and confidence has grown around things that previously scared me, like river crossings, down-climbing on tricky terrain and navigating off trail. I attribute that to the guides making really smart choices about what our group could handle, explaining things clearly and supporting me when I needed a breath before stepping into the unknown. I also think the way our group was constructed in terms of ability and temperament helped me feel safe to try things at the edge of my comfort zone. -Rebecca K.
My Skurka trip will stick with me for a lifetime! This is really the only way to go if you want an educational experience in addition to a trip. There are plenty of options for guided trips, but the Skurka trips are unique in their educational component. They are also unique in the time that is taken to mold the group dynamic. My group and guides were incredible, I can’t imagine it could be any better with a group of people I met for the first time as part of this trip. Finally, these trips are also carefully considered for the outdoor experience; beautiful uncrowded places; nothing else compares in a guided trip. I hope I get to do many more trips with Skurka! -Michael P.
After 3 days and 2 nights backpacking with Skurka’s fundamentals trip, I feel totally confident in planning a weekend backpacking trip for my friends and family. I know how to check the terrain, plan where to obtain water, look for the best camping locations and most importantly what/how to pack my backpack. I would highly recommend this course for folks who want to learn the skills of backpacking! The guides were incredibly knowledgeable and approachable. Overall 5/5! -Kristen
The Skurka trips are serious fun. The program is extremely well run with guides that are extraordinary as teachers and humans. Just 5 days before we were all total strangers and then, minutes before getting back to the trailhead, we stood together as a group, everyone with tears in our eyes. It’s a powerful experience both physically and emotionally. -Jonathan
This trip forever changed how I will backpack! Andrew Skurka has created a great system to educate folks on how to backpack light, and to do it off trail. I have been backpacking off & on since I was 6 years old, and still learned so much. The pre-work of creating a gear list, weighing your kit and then thinking critically about whether certain items are necessary was a great exercise and prompted me to pare down considerably. Being able to borrow from the gear locker to try new equipment was such a good opportunity. The classroom work at home getting familiar with Caltopo and Gaia was painful, but created a foundation for learning navigation in the field. I have always been directionally challenged and never really understood how to use a compass, but after this trip, I am on my way to success! Our guides were exceptional at explaining navigation, and incredibly patient as they explained the same things over and over until everyone understood. Our group was well matched as far as age and fitness, everyone was kind, and by a couple days into the trip, we were all bonded. It is rare to go on a group trip where you like everyone, and this was one of those occasions. -Lynne M.

The groups have been very well matched and the practical skills learned on the trail are all taught in a logical, rational and patient manner by total stud experienced guides. Joe and Bec made a fantastic guide team, considering the needs of the group as well as the individual at every point on the route. Every day brought new challenges, new demands, and new decisions, and even though I was challenged physically, each day was incredibly rewarding and fun. Skurka Adventures is for people who want to have an authentic experience in the wilderness, one they work for and learn from with great people with depth and character (and joy!). -Erin D.

Our group was well matched as far as age and fitness, everyone was kind, and by a couple days into the trip, we were all bonded. It is rare to go on a group trip where you like everyone, and this was one of those occasions. Andrew I don’t know how you recruit guides, but you hit the jackpot with Joe and Bec. They are natural educators, beyond comfortable in the wilderness, always had their patience pants on, generous with their time and knowledge, quick with a hug or word of encouragement, fun, and took this trip to an A+ rating. My only negative for the trip was disrupting the cryptobiotic soil. We were as careful as we could be, but sometimes when traveling off trail, there was no way to avoid stepping on it. That hurt my heart. -Lynne M.
This is the second trip I have taken with Andrew Skurka Adventures. I had a blast on both trips, and plan to participate in more of them in the future. They provide a true wilderness experience that would be hard to find from any other organized trip. There is so much to learn from the expert guides that he hires, and they are always excited to share their knowledge and experience. But, perhaps even more importantly, they are just a pleasure to spend time with. Always personable and fun! And Andrew just seems to have a knack for putting together groups that click. I have made several friends on my trips, and hope to spend time hiking or traveling with some of them in the future. I highly recommend these guided trips! -Jan K.
As an introvert, I was very nervous about signing myself up for 5 days alone with strangers. This, however, ended up being a non issue. 10 strangers being completely kind and vulnerable to each other was a beautiful experience in and of itself. Katie and Witt were model mentors and are now friends. I learned so much from them each day. Especially in terms of off-trail navigation. I could go on and on about the course and the location (which are world class), but I think others will cover that. The true gem was experiencing this magical place with special like minded people. -Matt C.
As a beginner backpacker that has ambitions that outpace my legs, this trip was amazing. I was able to explore the most beautiful environment I have ever seen, with an amazing group of people. The guides were impressively accomplished, interesting people that made me feel comfortable and safe in a very foreign to me environment. -Jacob D.
All of the Skurka guides are legends. They are wildly accomplished and inspire their clients to achieve their own goals. The two trips I have taken with them have enriched my life and given me the confidence to plan my own adventures. -Michael P.
After two trips with Skurka Adventures, I’ve expanded my knowledge and confidence more than my previous 45+ years of backpacking. Andrew has the secret sauce to create groups of like-minded and like-abled individuals that share an unforgettable experience in the backcountry. Just like the clients, the guides are perfectly matched to inspire, teach and challenge the group. I look forward to more trips in the future. -Michael S.
Going on a guided trip can be a sort of leap of faith , if you are aligned or interested in the ethos around Skurka’s adventures these trips offer an opportunity to get out there with a group of people who are very experienced and also constantly day dreaming about being outside. If you are on the fence, go for it ! -Bennet S.

My trip with my fellow clients under the leadership of Jeff and Sarah proved to be both an enjoyable and meaningful outdoor adventure that I am grateful to have experienced. I would gladly take a trip with the same group of people because I know it would again be physically challenging and mentally and emotionally restorative. -Hunter H.
I don’t know how he does it, but these are so much more than backpacking trips for me. This was my 2nd Skurka Adventure, and hopefully it will not be my last. I was given the opportunity to push myself to my limits, but it was always my choice and I always knew I was taken care of and safe. I formed relationships with 7 incredible people that in 4.5 days I trusted like family and looked forward to seeing every morning. We had two extraordinary guides that honestly cared about what we wanted to get out of our trip and planned each day around teaching us what we needed to know, and then stepped back at the end of the trip and watched us implement what we learned to ensure our success. I did not leave Utah the same person I was when I went there, and am eternally grateful to Andrew Skurka Adventures for that. -Susan G.
I can’t believe how much I got out of the prep before the trip. The educational component both before and during the trip was rich and unexpected. Such an incredible value. -Mat B.
I was nervous about my first 5 day backpacking trip, but this experience exceeded all of my expectations. I learned new skills like river crossing, built my navigation skills, and improved my confidence in backcountry decision making. Andrew and his team really helped level up my backpacking skills, off route navigation, and outdoor confidence in such a short amount of time. Andrew’s approach is very positive, inclusive, and absolutely willing to meet each person where they are at. It is apparent Andrew and his team really care and enjoy learning about and connecting with their clients. I was initially skeptical about doing a guided trip, but I am SO glad I did. -Benjamin F.
Andrew has developed an outstanding program incorporating premier locations, rockstar guides, and fellow clients who become lifelong friends. I feel lucky to have found this community of individuals so passionate about generously sharing their knowledge and experience. Their love and respect for the wilderness is contagious and I can’t wait to pass what I’ve learned along to others. -Danielle C.
Thanks to all of you. I was more than pleased with your product and excellence. -John G.
The absolutely 100% best way to build your backpacking confidence — great guides and instruction, stunning locations, and incredibly well-matched groups. -Randy C.
What an incredible trip! Utah was a beautiful desert that made navigation and water management challenging. The guides did a spectacular job putting our group in a position to push ourselves, navigate and visit some incredible sights. -Alix
Andrew Skurka’s guided trips are the gold standard for learning essential backpacking and navigational skills. You simply won’t find a more comprehensive curriculum and approach to becoming self-sustainable in the backcountry. This is because you learn from the best. The guides are often some of the best athletes in their field, in addition to being empathetic and extremely knowledgeable. -Sarah D.
The 5d adventure trip was my first with Skurka adventures, and it was phenomenal. I’ve done a decent amount of multi-day hiking and some camping, but had a lot of gaps in my knowledge and experience. The trip gave me exposure to key skills such as map and compass work and route finding, and even small tips and tricks from how to quickly leave camp in the morning to efficiently cross different types of terrain; there’s no substitute for in field learning. All of the education was interactive, and this was so much more than simply following someone on a preplanned route. I enjoyed the trip and will return for a future one. Thank you! -Allen W.
This trip really expanded my definition of hiking, and the world that I can reach on my feet. I came into it off my first thru-hike feeling like I knew what hiking was about. Wake up, follow the trail, go to sleep. From the first day, Escalante challenged and humbled that knowledge. My guides and group members helped grow my route finding skills and confidence, and that confidence has opened up a new world to me. -John B.
These trips are so much greater than the sum of the parts; it’s not just a backpacking trip. The people, the guides, the locations together create unforgettable experiences, challenges, and memories. -Paul S.
The best type two fun you’ll love telling people about! -Bob D.
This trip exceeded my expectations in every way possible. I feel so much more capable navigating off trail, and empowered to make better decisions in the backcountry. I can’t wait for my next one! -Alyse M.
I’ve backpacked with several other outfitters, but going with Andrew’s team is my favorite. Three reasons — opportunities to challenge myself, matching of ability levels, and curriculum. I’m able to find ways to challenge myself through the terrain, difficulty of the trip, and what skills I develop. Assigning us to groups by our ability levels means that no one is ever too far ahead or behind, which allows us to really get to know each other and grow as a group. The pre-trip curriculum is deeply useful but also not overwhelming and the guides are responsive during the trip to additional things you want to learn. -Carla E.
I learned an amazing amount about really pairing down my gear and trimming weight and volume to tailor what I carried to the adventure I was taking. It was a pleasantly uncomfortable planning process, pushing me out of my comfort zone so that I really made a difference. And that was just the beginning. The trip itself was an amazing adventure. Our group could not have been better matched. We all carried something that wasn’t in our packs into the wilderness and there we got to unpack it together. I think we all left a little something behind, unburdening us in the process, but we also carried something forward that weighed nothing but feels momentous. Our guides were incredible, before, during and after the trip. This is a group of amazing new friends and fellow backpackers. I cannot wait to see them again when our trails merge at some point in the future. I would absolutely join them again! -Shannon F.
How does a person even begin to put into words the most gratifying, the most astonishing, and the most didactic experience of their entire lives? Never has something been more worth it. -Tyler R.
ASA exceeded my expectations. We had a strong, experienced group and each of us came home with more skills and understanding. Andrew and his team matched group participants well. -Dodger
Even as a fairly seasoned backpacker, the tools and skills acquired on these trips are outstanding for becoming more efficient and more adept at off trail navigation. After this trip I will forever be able to go farther faster and through more intimidating terrain than I’ve ever felt comfortable doing before. The trips are also just a ton of fun. -Nathan T.
The trip in Utah is an absolute standout among my backpacking trips to date, and one of the best experiences in my life! Experiencing this vast, majestic landscape with a great group of people and amazing guides helped me develop my backpacking skills and broaden my horizon. I think that I’ll be back for another trip, hopefully again with Joe and Witt, who are an absolute guiding dream team! -Roman S.
I’m writing this after my 3rd trip with Skurka Adventures. Every single time, I started thinking that the landscapes would be, far and away, the highlight of the trip. But, every single time, the guides (with their knowledge & passion) made it an even call. I can’t think of a better set of guides to take a guided backpacking trip to places that require some location-specific knowledge to pull off a good trip. I had not really backpacked in the desert and I didn’t personally know anyone with whom I would be comfortable doing such a trip. And Skurka just makes it so much easier; the logistics are taken care of, all you need to do is come prepared physically and you are set – all you have to do is go out with a great group, a great pair of guides and have fun! -Nirmal V.
I thought nothing could match the peak experience that was my first Skurka trip to the Brooks Range. But having returned from a second Skurka trip in Utah, I learned that the exceptional guides, clients and locations are not the exception but the norm with this outfit. Already aspiring to my third trip! -Stephen V.
Getting off trail to face and overcome fresh challenges gave me the confidence to push my outdoor adventures to the next level. I’m grateful to have been able to push my boundaries in the presence of experienced guides, all while having a great time. -Anonymous
The five day adventure in Escalante was fantastic. -Alex W.
Escalante exceeded expectations; it felt remote, it was challenging, and beautiful. The guides were great and the other people in the group were all wonderful companions. -Drew L.
-Megan M.
Fantastic trip in Grand Staircase – Escalante. Superb guides and diverse group of hiking companions, well matched dispositionally and fitness-wise. Training course and pre-departure coaching are very useful for dialing in kit and grounding expectations. Hit the weather window perfectly, cowboy camping all nights save one and hot but tolerable hiking on warmest days. -Kevin P.
I’ll never forget my time in Southern Utah. It was a perfect combination of mind-blowing scenery, valuable learning and bonding with new friends. There were challenges, but the guides kept us motivated and worked with the group to make route choices that everyone was comfortable with. The pre-trip coursework and lessons along the way made me feel safe and well prepared. It was truly a trip of a lifetime! -John W.
Stunningly beautiful experience. Couldn’t have asked for a better group of people to share this journey with. -Tiffany L.
I got so much more out of this trip than I was expecting. Getting to know 9 new people. Learning not only from our guides, but each group member. The trip was more physically taxing than I expected, but that made each night more rewarding. I was able to push myself past my comfort zone and feel safe doing it with our knowledgeable guides. Each day was a new challenge with beautiful scenery as a reward. I was excited to try new things like using webbing to get down difficult obstacles, route finding in difficult terrain including finding our way out of a canyon and setting up shelters in difficult weather. I can’t wait for the next trip!-Christopher S.
Amazing trip run by amazing people. The guides have incredible experience and it was an epic adventure that will leave you physically and mentally stronger with memories that will last forever. -AJ
Andrew and his guide team are top notch. From the first online course, to the last day of the trip. The team had the group’s best interest. The sheer beauty of our surroundings were matched only by the guide’s willingness to give us the best possible experience. Being off trail provides an experience not very many backpackers get to experience. The education provided before the trip prepared us all for a wonderful trip. -Steve K.
Learn to backpack the right way while creating lifelong positive memories! Skurka trips are a pure WIN regarding education (off trail map work, packing, safety), beautiful scenery away from other hikers, group camaraderie, inspirational “stud” leaders, value/ price. Avoid this amazing experience if you simply want to pay some money, make a plane ticket, and show up to follow a leader like a baby duck on an established trail. -Corey M.
Not scary, super fun, Andrew Skurka and his exceptional team enabled me to prepare myself for this trip in every conceivable way. An amazing value and a cherished memory. I’m sad it’s over. -Katie L.
Spending five days backpacking with strangers in the desert might sound terrible to some, but with Andrew Skurka Adventures, it was one of the highlights of my life. Andrew Skurka and his team of guides were knowledgeable, inclusive, and fun. Their attention to conservation, safety, and education was more than lip service but felt every step of the way. -Anna S.I signed up for the trip wanting to gain confidence with off-trail travel but got much more than that. Grand Staircase Escalante: Canyoneering
I gained a solid foundation of knowledge to build upon as I continue my journey in canyoneering. -Ben S.
I’m already looking forward to next year! -Taryn F.
The canyoneering trip far exceeded my expectations in both learning technical skill sets and a sense of adventure. -Ryan D.

As an alum of multiple Skurka trips, I was delighted to take my game to another level with an awesome Canyoneering experience in Escalante! Great guides, great group, and great venue. Highly recommend it!! -Sam D.
My goal this year has been to up my vertical game and as part of that, I joined Skurka’s first canyoneering course. It was both so much fun and I learned so much! Group dynamics could have been challenging considering the physical difficulty, the bumps and scrapes, and the adrenaline but the guides made sure from the very start to create an environment where everyone was both physically safe and also safe to learn, to struggle, to get help and to offer help. We learned *a lot* and even though it was only five days, my confidence in moving though canyons and using ropes to make scrambles and climbs safer increased enough that I felt I could join experienced friends and feel good about assessing their safety practices and keep myself safe. If this is Canyoneering 101, I hope there will be a 201 course in the future! -Corinna

I also developed more confidence in off-trail navigation and overall nutrition strategies. Exploring some of America’s lesser known public lands with a like-minded community will be your reward! -Mike B.
I absolutely love this company! I feel like I learned more in a three day trip (with the Plan Like A Pro google classroom component included) than I could in a year watching youtube videos or reading books on backpacking. The guides, Katie and Matt, were first class all the way. Both very impressive and elite in their field. I was very fortunate to be able to pick their brain for a few days and they were more than happy to share their knowledge throughout the process. I have taken trips with several companies but none have taken the time to group guests to maximize the chance of a successful trip for all. Also, there is no company that rivals the attention to detail throughout the process that Skurka Adventures has throughout the process. I look forward to future trips! -Chad M.
Alaska: Expedition
Anyone can say they are “guides” and “instructors” but the Skurka team leaders are the best in the business; accomplished, excellent decision makers, and extremely competent. -Jeff B.
Skurka and his crew always deliver. They check all the boxes and provide a great time for everyone in the group. It’s a great service. -Matt
I have joined Skurka for several trips (Yosemite and Alaska), and found both to be excellent experiences. Andrew (and frankly all his other guides I’ve been matched with) combines a depth of experience about the terrain with the ability to appropriately assess the skill level of all group members and delivers a perfectly catered experience that at once challenges and educates. This is not an easy task, as our group included people of varying ages and skill levels, so making sure that everyone is challenged, but not overly so, is difficult (“side adventure” options on top of the usual route are a nice touch offering additional challenge to those who so choose). I intend to continue to use Andrew and co. and can’t wait for my next adventure. -Greg H.
We live in a world full of incredible wilderness, and I have loved learning how to competently venture far off any path through Andrew Skurka Adventures. I’m a 3x repeat client and was so thrilled to experience a trip in Alaska with expert guides, and a great team of well-matched clients with whom I’ll remain friends for years! -Aaron N.
Skurka’s guided trips give you a great opportunity to see difficult-to-access parts of the world with highly experienced and well-informed guides. They’re also an excellent value for the price. Your peers on the trips are likely to be exceptional and fascinating people. -James L.
A Skurka course is the perfect way to shorten the learning curve and raise your backpacking game, whether you’re new to backpacking or have decades of experience. The instructors are masters at their craft, and all share a humility and an eagerness to teach that makes every part of the course a joy. -Justin M.
I have been on multiple Skurka trips and each one has been unique, challenging, and exciting. I have expanded my backcountry skills, made new friends, and been beyond happy with my experience each time. I’ll definitely be back for more! -Danny P.
Andrew’s experience in running his guiding business shows, our trip was thoughtfully executed, had superb guiding, and superb wilderness for us to traverse. Resources were succinct, thorough, and easy to follow. -Dave W.
Preparing for and making your way to, and through, Skurka’s Alaska trip is a serious undertaking, but it is so worth it. For me, it was a once in a lifetime opportunity to be in a place I’d never visit other than with a group like this, to experience a landscape and part of the country very few have an opportunity to visit. Most memorable backpacking experience of my life. -Michael W.
An amazing experience – the location, the solitude, the route, the meals, the people, and countless learnings that will stay with me forever. I am already looking forward to my next trip with Andrew and his team! -Chris
I had an amazing expedition trip in the Brooks range with Andrew and Christy as our guides. My biggest goal going into this trip was to improve my navigational skills so that I can become comfortable executing off-trail trips on my own. After finishing this trip, I feel I have accomplished that and feel more confident of doing off-trail trips on my own. -Guru N.
I can’t recommend Skurka Adventure trips enough. The guides are amazing, the trips are well-organized and thought out, and the locations are spectacular. Three years ago I knew almost nothing at all about light backpacking; from doing several trips with Skurka I’ve learned a ton, and this year was able to do an 11-day trip with them in the Brooks Range in Alaska! -Wes T.
The Brooks Range trip was everything I expected: incredible mountain scenery every step, extreme remoteness, very unique terrain, big animal sightings, lots of antler sheds, no sign of human existence for most of the trip (aside from airplanes), superb trail meals, and the best guides I can imagine. -Craig M.
If you want to get off trail and improve your backpacking, don’t wait and sign up for a trip! Overall fabulous trip with great guides and people. Our group was matched well and everyone was great group members. I would imagine our group would continue to do things together in the future after meeting for the first time on this trip. Great learning experience in the field and the knowledge throughout the course utilizing google classroom was top-notch! I can’t wait to go on another trip. If you’re on the fence, get off! And sign up for one of these guided trips in your future. -Rob B.
I was very happy with my experience in Alaska this year. I had an amazing adventure with great people and would happily do it again next year. -Scott S.
I would go anywhere with these guides! -James F.
Among many other talents, Andrew’s true superpower is curating groups of people that will genuinely enjoy being together in the backcountry. I have developed close friendships with several people I met on Skurka trips and all of my hiking partners are Skurka alums. His guides are also phenomenal – not just their accomplishments, which are extraordinary – also, their character and emotional intelligence. The guides are responsible for your safety and your experience, and Andrew’s guides excel at ensuring both. -Marvin K.
Our guides Jeff and Richard did an amazing job salvaging our trip from the clutches of disaster due to illness and weather. The group came together to make it happen. Jeff conjured up an engaging and scenic route on the fly and had an encyclopedic knowledge of all things plants, animals, and of course backpacking. He put on a masterclass of guide craft: managing the group in complex terrain, challenging weather, and last minute logistics. Richard was enthusiastic, strong as an ox, and most of all was invested in caring for each individual in the group. As for the Brooks Range… it is big, wild, harsh, beautiful, and everything I dreamed it would be. -Seth C.
I had an amazing 11 days in the Brooks Range with Jeff Wohl as lead guide. I had a chance to put my skills to the test as well as learn plenty of new information in a pristine wilderness where we experienced much of what Alaska has to offer. We hiked through huge glacial valleys, crossed ice/snow/glaciers and talus/scree, were in awe of the views coming over mountain passes, saw plenty of wildlife, navigated in thick fog, crossed cold and powerful rivers – it was a true adventure in mountains north of the arctic circle where few will ever go. -Mark S.
I love adventure and the Skurka Brooks AK trip certainly over delivered in all aspects of fun and challenging adventure. But what I wasn’t expecting was the incredible experience I had with my guides. I am a seasoned backpacker and all around outdoor enthusiast but never thought I would learn as much as I did with my guides…it was true outdoor adventure field immersion but with a classroom type education….never knew that combination could happen real time! -Jim M.
Andrew’s ability to match groups so well and his experienced guides made backpacking in such a remote region of Alaska absolutely incredible. I was very well prepared for the location & conditions, felt very safe with the expertise & knowledge of his guides & met a whole group of new hiking buddies. I had so much fun I almost didn’t want to come home. -Joe B.
Extremely highly recommended. Highest quality guides, locations, training, client matching, and overall planning both before the trip and in the field. I’ve done three trips now and they’ve all exceeded expectations. -Randy C.
What an amazing capstone trip! Alaska is absolutely wild, stunning, and challenging, and Andrew’s attention to detail as well as his top notch guides made for a fantastic experience. -Allison L.
I’ve been on two 7-day trips with Andrew Skurka Adventures now and I plan to be on more in the future. I’ve been backpacking for about a decade and overall feel pretty confident in my skills, but I always pick up new information and feel sharper after a Skurka trip. Moreover there’s always such a great group dynamic, and I’ve made friends that I’ll continue to hike with. I spend a lot of my time hiking solo, so to be able to jump into a great group and get to know some like-minded people in the backcountry is just an awesome experience. -Joel C.
I am grateful to have experienced the Alaskan wilderness with such amazing guides as Brian and Jose, who were both exceptionally knowledgeable, yet patient, approachable, and always happy to share their passion for the outdoors. I was impressed by the dynamic of our group who bonded quickly over shared passion and humor, making the trip such an enjoyable experience. Meticulous planning seems to be Andrew’s hallmark from logistics, the planning course, meals, routes, and group matching, overall making for an incredible trip. -Andrew T.
Hiking in Alaska with Andrew Skurka was a once in a lifetime experience that I would highly recommend to any ambitious and adventurous backpacker! -Jeff H
Italians frequently complain about food abroad. I did complain, and did every meal, to keep up with my traditions, but I secretly loved the taste, variety, and easiness to prepare. I cannot believe I had almost seven different cooked breakfasts and dinners, and ate like a king in one of the most remote places on Earth! -Stefano M.
-Greg M.
High Sierra: Fundamentals
When I learned about Andrew’s trips I wasn’t sure I wanted the mental effort of an educational program right now. I was also considering the type of guiding company where all I have to do is show up with boots. I am so happy I decided to go with Andrew. The online curriculum combined with the practical work in the field was just enough to give me the skills I was hoping to build without being overwhelming. This was the best trip I could have hoped for and I look forward to returning for more. -Amanda G.
I could never go on another guided trip after this. Incredible off-trail adventures, swimming everyday, impressive guides and invaluable skills that have allowed me to plan trips for my friends and family. My trip challenged me and I’m leaving with up-leveled navigation and map and compass skills that make me feel more comfortable in the backcountry. -Alix M.
This is an absolute golden ticket for anyone passionate about backpacking. I can’t emphasize enough how fortunate I felt to have participated in this master class led by two of the most knowledgeable individuals, handpicked by none other than the legendary Andrew Skurka himself. It was truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to elevate my backpacking knowledge without the usual trial-and-error approach we often encounter when starting out. I must say, having the crème de la crème of backpackers from this side of the world was an awe-inspiring experience. Their expertise and enthusiasm were palpable, and they graciously welcomed every question and eagerly demonstrated various skills. It felt like I was learning to play basketball from Kobe Bryant or soccer from Messi – that’s the level of greatness we’re talking about! Beyond the initial star-struck feeling, it quickly became evident that no detail was left unattended. Every aspect of the journey was meticulously taken care of, right down to the tiniest details. The guides were not just one step ahead, but two steps ahead at all times, ensuring a seamless and enriching experience for each participant. In short, this backpacking expedition was a true dream come true, guided by exceptional leaders, and I couldn’t be more grateful for the knowledge and memories gained during this unforgettable adventure. -Albert P.
Having been on several Skurka Adventures and enjoyed solo hiking for some time, I wanted to introduce my 21 y/o son to this set of experiences. He was wholly skeptical when I attempted to warn him that, as a city boy, this was very likely to be a life changing experience for him. Thrilled with Andrew’s program in that my boy later admitted the experience COMPLETELY blew the walls off his sandbox and he is hungry for more. -Kurt
I was recommended to join this course by an experienced backpacker friend, and this course ended up far exceeding my already high expectations! What makes Skurka Adventures special and unique from other backpacking trips/courses are: (1) the exceptional quality of the guides, who are all incredibly impressive in their feats but also amazing and patient teachers who genuinely want to share what they love with the participants, (2) the attention and effort put toward teaching and building up participants’ skills, without hand holding and doing everything for participants, and (3) the company – everyone joining these trips is so interesting, kind, intentional and motivated! Skurka Adventures is the perfect experience for people who actually want to learn among like minded people! -Ella C.
High Sierra: Adventure
This was my second trip with Andrew Skurka Adventures and it is really amazing to me how well Andrew matches up the groups. The groups I have been part of matched up perfectly based on technical skills, fitness level and personalities. The camaraderie that this creates is tremendous. The guides are all exceptional, and the locations we go to are phenomenal. I will be back for more trips with Andrew and his team. -Jim K.
-Jonathan
I was extremely pleased with my 5 day backpacking trip. The trip planning, preparation, and execution of the trip were very organized and thorough. Our location in the Sierras was stunning. The route was just challenging enough. The guides were top-notch. I’ve been backpacking for 45 years and still learned quite a bit, especially about off-trail travel. I plan to come back! -Brian B.
Exceeded all expectations. I really enjoyed the process and team! -Tyson
I took a trip with Skurka Adventures to gain confidence. I’ve done day hiking for years with family/friends, and while I’ve always wanted to, I’ve never once truly gone backpacking. I signed up for the Adventure trip to get a fast-paced introduction, and that’s exactly what it did! I now have gear I’m comfortable taking into the backcountry and initial skills (navigation, planning, risk/safety assessment, campsite selection, etc) that I can keep improving on going-forward. I went from being nervous about how I’ll do after 1 full day in the outdoors to now planning future trips with some of the people I met on the trip! Thank you to Skurka and the rest of the guides for doing such a great job. -Nikhil U.
This was my second trip with Andrew Skurka Adventures and it did not disappoint. Joe and Sarah were great guides with very extensive backgrounds. They created a great atmosphere to learn, experience, while not feeling stifled by being guided. The team does a great job of putting together people of similar fitness levels. These trips are well worth the money for anyone looking to do something outside of their comfort zone backpacking, and growing in their abilities. -Ben M.
Taking a backpacking trip with Andrew Skurka was one of the most incredible and inspiring experiences of my life. We covered an astonishing amount of ground each day, traversing alpine meadows, climbing mountain passes, and camping under starry night skies. Andrew’s crew is extremely knowledgeable and their passion for the outdoors is unparalleled. Our lead guide Joe (thestringbean) identified almost every plant and pointed out subtle terrain features. Sarah, our co-guide, was ever present with her careful eyes on people. They taught us various aspects of hiking, decision making every day!! More importantly, they all showed me how to truly appreciate nature and the wilderness. Learning was an essential part of the whole trip. Assessing risks, navigation with paper map and compass, dialing your gear, you name it. And it would be a shame to not mention the detailed & methodical preparation time that was well worth spent. No amount of high praise is enough for the careful planning and curriculum that Andrew has evolved over time. Finally, the food Andrew provided for breakfast and dinner was top notch. After a grueling day of hiking and wet feet I could not have asked for a better meal!! Thanks to Andrew & his team, I accomplished hiking distances I never thought possible before. I saw some of the most breathtaking scenery nature has to offer. It was rewarding to push my limits in a sustainable way. This trip has motivated me to hike more and tread lightly. Joe and Sarah were amazing guides – both encouraging and patient. Hiking with them was an adventure I will never forget! I am definitely coming back for many more Andrew Skurka adventure experiences. -Bikram N.
My 5 day trip in the Emigrant Wilderness exceeded my expectations for beauty and a degree of challenge that I found I could handle. I think it begins with Skurka’s ability to match people up in a group but then extends to the expertise of the guides. I thought Bec Bastion and Jose Mendez performed like the pros they are every step of the way. They were well organized, patiently instructing each person, and searched for interesting challenges under their guidance such as, stream crossings, traversing snow, and off-trail navigation. Since I thought Bec and Jose performed with the highest distinction I decided to ask someone in my group who had been on 2 other Skurka trips how his other guides compared. His answer was, “Just as good.” I always felt I was in good hands with the excellent communication and organization from Andrew and Katie. Thank you. -Larry M.
The stewardship and scholarship I received from Andrew and his team allowed me to participate in the Plan Like a Pro and Adventure trips. I found the inclusivity for a diverse community outstanding. -Sierra W.
Once again, Skurka Adventure did not disappoint! The pre-planning and communication months ahead of the trip were helpful, encouraging and educational. But . . . most of all . . . THE GUIDES! I cannot adequately say how impressive, knowledgeable, and kind the guides were. Skurka Adventures have taken me to places in the backcountry I would NEVER go alone! -Jenifer C.
If I had gone on that trip alone with a friend, we would have had a lot of trouble. The guides made snow climbs, descents, and traverses feel like that’s why we were there. By day two they were just part of the hike. This trip helped me realize that it really is about smiles not miles. I was challenged by five passes (Bishop twice). I didn’t need to have 80 miles thrown in there. I found that I am definitely more of a loop person and I will continue to explore the Sierra in loops rather than point to point on a trail. -Ruben Z.
Our seven day trip in the Sierra’s was superb! The guides were extremely good leaders and educators. The food was good and the views were great! Our group was very well matched. Everyone was appropriately challenged and learned a great deal while enjoying themselves in the wilderness. I have substantial backpacking experience and highly recommend traveling with and learning from Andrew Skurka and his team! -Bill H.
The trip was amazing. I learned so much from the guides and was especially grateful for the high snow year that allowed for extra skill development. The views were superb. The river crossing lessons will help save lives. Seven days may seem like a long time to spend with strangers but the group was so well matched I was not ready for the trip to end. -Karen L.
My time in the Sierras with Andrew’s team was unforgettable. We learned new skills, had new experiences, made new friends, and saw beautiful views few people ever get to experience. I am so impressed with the quality of the guides, the cohesion of the group, and the coordination that had to happen to make this possible. Very grateful to have had this experience made possible – one that stretched me and helped me grow as a backpacker. -Cali
Best way to experience the Sierra’s. -David D.
A spectacular trip! All the stars aligned to deliver what was a once-in-a-lifetime experience: the dynamic duo of guides Joe & Nicco who led with confidence, humor, and care; a diverse group who were each deeply motivated to learn and to be present; a high snow winter that left a beautiful landscape and ample glissading opportunities; and not that many bugs! I had high expectations and they were exceeded! Hands-down the best guided outdoor experience I’ve ever participated in! -Ryan G.
The trip exceeded my expectations, even in a high snow year the guides and route chosen were perfect to achieve the goals of route finding using map and compass and crampon use. The trip will be one of my top life adventures with such fond memories. -Steven M
Choosing a Skurka guided trip was a great investment in my need for personal renewal through outdoor exploration. It requires a commitment on my part that extends beyond easily cancelable permits, while simultaneously allowing me to expand my personal limits in a risk managed environment. The guides provide seasoned technical guidance and training but also an inclusive leadership style supportive of today’s diverse clientele. The program allows me to grow beyond my more tame solo foot path adventures. -Buddy S.
Well worth the time and money to go have an off trail adventure in the snowy High Sierras with amazing guides and fellow clients. -Scott S.
Andrew runs a special program. The locations are world class and the guides are some of the most experienced and capable in North America. They strike a great balance between teaching, motivating, and keeping things light and fun. The terrain and itineraries are spectacular and the people the program attracts tend to be fun, friendly and interesting. As a fit 61 year old female athlete and backpacker I would say that my “Skurka” trip to Kings canyon this summer was one of the most challenging things I have ever done and perhaps one of the most personally fulfilling. This trip was both an outward and inward journey towards meeting myself at all the potential crossroads of fear and joy. It was stunning terrain and every beautiful breath and moment counted, but the support of our exceptional guides and the incredible bonding of our group was the magic carpet ride for me. I would highly recommend, and have recommended, the “Skurka” adventures to anyone who wants the adventure of a lifetime and is willing to show up and allow the process of hiking the Sierra backcountry with a group of your new “best” friends to be a life changing moment. -Laurie B.
Three trips in, a lifetime more to go. Every experience on an Andrew Skurka trip is better than the last. -Diana R.
Trip of a lifetime! Andrew and Mikaela were fantastic, knowledgeable guides. They exceeded expectations in teaching our group about off-trail travel in an understandable and practical format. After our trip, I now feel more comfortable tackling more adventurous routes in my own travels. -Dalton B.
I’ve now completed four “high” trips with Andrew Skurka Adventures, and I’ll keep coming back as long as they let me! -Kenan H.
I’ve been wanting to learn and practice skills for off trail travel for a while now, and my trip with Andrew and Mikaela in SEKI was the perfect way to help me do that. California had an epic winter in 2022-23 and as result we encountered early season conditions even though our trip was in late July. Andrew and Mikaela had to teach us skills for off trail navigation and travel through extensive lingering snowpack, high water levels, downed trees, and avalanche debris. Despite all those hurdles, we had an incredible trip and got to see areas deep in Sierras in conditions that few other people have this year. We ran into a ranger who told us he thought we were the first group of the season up and over a number of the passes we traversed – and it felt that way! It’s a testament to Andrew and Mikaela’s skills as teachers and guides that we were able to get out and see those areas of the park! It’s not often you get to learn from two people with as much experience in the backcountry under their belt as Mikaela and Andrew. I’d highly recommend a trip with them, both for the genuine adventure of it, and the learning opportunities these trips provide. -Will L.
Every trip I’ve done with Andrew Skurka has changed me in some deep and positive way and enriched my life experience- I know that sounds almost melodramatic but it’s true. And oh, by the way, it’s made me a better, stronger, fitter, more experienced, and safer, backpacker. -Scott G.
The Skurka trip delivered all it promised and more, the planning was impeccable, the guides outstanding and the experience amazing. It provided a challenge within a framework that allowed me to stretch my limits, while feeling safe. I received more than I expected and emerged a much better backpacker!!! -Alfredo A.
The California High Sierra trip was truly amazing. Somewhat new to backpacking the pre-trip curriculum had me prepared both physically and mentally. The guides taught us off trail navigation, how to choose an off trail campsite, and navigating off trail terrain just to name a few highlights of many. As a newer backpacker I feel I gained confidence in my backpacking skills. Andrew did a great job of matching me with a group that had a similar skill set. The group bonded over the 5 days, and I feel we will be friends for life. -John A.
Another epic trip with Skurka Adventures. These trips never fail to challenge me mentally or physically while also allowing me to experience indescribable beauty and majesty of some of the most beautiful and remote areas in the world. -Chris S.
World-class location, world-class guides, ample learning opportunities to develop skills and confidence in new terrain, and supportive group members. What more could you ask for from a backpacking trip? Skurka Adventures is in a class of its own! -Ben B.
My second trip with Andrew was the culmination of my effort to resume my love for travel in the high mountains and retool my skills and kit after an eight-year gap. I’m grateful to Andrew, my Guides, and Team members that I could achieve this at age 70 in such a supportive and educational context and have some more years to look forward to exploring wilderness. -Jim M.
I had an incredible experience being led by two exceptional guides through the Sierra Nevada Mountains. In addition to learning important hiking skills, it was great to be around other hiking enthusiasts for five days. At the end of the trip, I really wished we had another five days to explore the backcountry together. -John C.
My trip to the Sierra-Nevada was an experience of a lifetime as a young man. Never before have I been able to hike through mountains and be far into a disconnected setting like this before. It was truly amazing, and made me realize where humans are meant to be. Also how little we really need to live. I realize now there is greater happiness and meaning when our bare necessities are met, simply living in a small community and working together to achieve a common goal. Also after missing out on hot showers, comfortable beds, real food and music, I was ready to return back to civilization. Regardless, trips like these are healthy for the soul, and good to remind everyone to be grateful for what we have in a world that always wants more. -Luke
As an experienced backpacker I was looking for a new challenge and experience. My trip with Skurka was amazing beyond belief. It exceeded my expectations in every way. It was both challenging and enjoyable at the same time. I am much more confident now! -Josh G.
This was the most spectacular trip I have ever experienced. The route, the guides, the scenery – I don’t see any way it could have been better. -Chris B.
Andrew is the ultra-light backpacking guide par excellence, running trips in awe-inspiring locations with superb guides. -David D.
If there is a more enjoyable, thorough, no-nonsense backcountry experience, I don’t know who offers it. -Ben J.
I participated in the 5 day trip out of the Inyo forest a few weeks ago. This was my first backpacking trip and I have to say it was everything I hoped for. I was challenged mentally and physically while learning every step of the way. Our guides, Katie and Jose were amazing. They were very nice, helpful and patient with the group. They also took their time to show us navigation skills, wildlife, and answered any other questions we had regarding backpacking. I would definitely recommend a trip with the Skurka team. Very professional, personable and an overall great experience. -Dominic M.
I had an amazing time on Skurka Adventures this year in the Sierra. What I love about the trips and the Sierra’s is the amount of time we spend off trail, which creates a totally different (and better IMO) backpacking experience. The guides are super knowledgeable and you can tell Andrew puts a lot of thought into who should and who should not be in each group. This was my second trip with them, it’s always a blast. I plan on doing more! -Will E.
Embarking on the Sierra High Route was more than just a trek; it was an immersion into an unforgettable community. Led by the most exceptional guides, who knew the mountains like the back of their hands, I felt in safe and knowledgeable hands from start to finish. Whether I was holding up the group seeking the perfect vista for a backcountry bidet or asking yet another ‘unique’ question, their patience was unyielding and their answers always enlightening. Every mealtime was like a mini-high elevation festival, bursting with inclusive conversations, fun tales, and laughter. But the heart of the journey was also in the camaraderie with the 8 amazing backpackers and guides that I was lucky to share the trail / off trail with. Each day, as we hiked, camped, and marveled at the vistas, bonds grew stronger, stories became more hilarious, and by the end, it wasn’t just the mountain peaks and passes I had conquered but also lifelong friendships I had made. Thanks again! -Brett R.
Great prep work, great guides, great group, and great setting all made for an awesome experience. The off-trail experience opened doors to an entirely different Sierra adventure than a trail based hike. I appreciate the time and effort the guide team took to make myself and others feel comfortable taking on a new challenge. -Chris F.
I have to say that at Skurka Adventures they REALLY know how to assemble some amazing people! The guides I’ve had on-trip, and those I’ve interacted with during the planning curriculum, have all been rockstars with a wealth of expertise that just adds to the body of knowledge Skurka has already made available online. And they also know how to match up a client group to have an amazing experience. I’ve sought out the more challenging trips, but I’d imagine that any of their itineraries will be curated to best provide what you’re looking for in an adventure trip, just be sure to come ready to learn! -Emily P.
This was such an eye-opening and enriching experience – most of my outdoor recreation to date has been of a solo weekend warrior variety hammering out long trail days, and I found my trip to the High Sierra to be such a refreshing change. I worked harder to travel cross country and was more engaged with my surroundings than ever before; I enjoyed the company of other clients and guides from many different backgrounds who came together to be part of a cohesive group committed to everyone’s enjoyment and comfort; and I found I would gladly trade head down walking to push long miles for the education and immersion in the surroundings that the guides provided. -Gregg T.
Sometime late last year I promised myself that I’d put myself out there. Try new things. Make connections. Explore stuff I’d always wanted to do, but maybe resisted. All of which led me to this trip with Andrew Skurka. 5 days in the High Sierras with 2 guides and 6 other strangers from different backgrounds all around the country. This was my first time backpacking, and the elevation, the conditions (lingering snow and water from the wettest winter on record), and the terrain made it one of the toughest mental and physical exercises I’ve ever experienced… but it was perfect. Our guides were professional and knowledgeable, I learned a ton / felt safe exploring, and our group dynamic was great. Overall a 10/10, and a resounding personal success for me. -Jeff L.
High Sierra: Expedition
The trek was astonishing in the quality of scenery, uniqueness, challenge, guiding, & learning. I’m still reflecting & writing my own trip report. I feel a significant shift in my WIP (what is possible) & freedom. Earned confidence for me translates into shifting the WIP for hundreds of young people. My first Skurka trip opened the door to backcountry off-trail travel. This trip broke the door down. The only flaw was the wide range in fitness/readiness for a 10 day expedition with no resupply. -William R.
The trip was amazing. The scenery in the High Sierras is huge and beautiful unlike anywhere I’ve ever been, and the ability to get so deep into the mountains, and see so much incredible scenery off trail where few people ever go, was exhilarating. Trip of a lifetime. -Greg J.
Washington: Adventure
Andrew Skurka Adventures excels in two very important ways: the groups are matched extremely well for capability and fitness making for enjoyable, cohesive, supportive group dynamics on the trail; the guides are all accomplished experts who are absolutely focused on the positive experience of the group. It’s a great way to improve or learn new backcountry skills and gain confidence for my solo adventures. -Rod L.
For me this trip was such a feel-good introduction to the Olympics. I didn’t know what to expect of the terrain and environment. Now that I am back at home, I am plotting how I can go back. -Alex H.
As advertised, learn a lot, enjoy a lot, meet many others with the same goals and capabilities. -Pat K.
This was my fourth Andrew Skurka Adventures trip; that should speak for itself about the quality of the experiences available. Icing on the cake is that I’ve made long-lasting friendships with clients and guides. -Mark M.
I loved it! Even with lots of backpacking experience, I still learned a lot. The pre-trip homework was quite useful. I loved both guides, and the other clients were all cool too. I’m also very glad to have taken the WFA course, because it’s targeted to the kinds of wilderness experiences I’m likely to encounter. -Aaron R.
An all round excellent trip in which we packed a huge amount of education, fun and learning into 5 days. -Sarah P.
This is my 4th ASA trip and 3rd location, all exceptional and unique experiences. The groups have been engaging and supportive with a shared appreciation for the gift of the outdoors. Signing up for these trips have provided a training goal each year and a way to recharge and come back mentally refreshed.I highly recommend an ASA trip, get it on the calendar! -Tim S.
I had an incredible adventure and met all of my personal goals. The guides were fantastic and engaging, and I made new friends I’m sure to hike with again in the future. -David W.
This was an opportunity to watch the process of someone who has published multiple high route guides, and the trip delivered on this opportunity. The experience was incredibly well organized, from the prep work in the months before the trip, to the application process and selection of members of a group, to the in person educational portion. Excellent way to meet some like minded people. I got what I came to Andrew Skurka Adventures for, a good hike. -Scott K.
Andrew and his team have fostered a vibrant and unique community through adventurous trips across the country’s most wild places. -Josh G.
-Brit K.
This was such an excellent experience! It helped me get out of my comfort zone of only walking on trails and helped me appreciate how off trail navigation opens up worlds of adventure. I loved the “clinics” that offered great skills and the leadership was great. Not to mention the food! I have done two trips with Andrew Skurka and would recommend this to any serious backpacker. -Rachel D.
Second time with ASA with an “upgrade” to a 5d WA Olympics – excellent location, very well structured team (well done to the selection algorithm!), excellent guiding and an awesome trip altogether! -Daniel M.
The courses offered as part of Andrew Skurka’s curriculum go beyond the basic logistics and knowledge required of a backcountry traveler. Instead, his guides and online curriculum instill a sense of belonging to an entity that is bigger than the sum of its parts. A team based atmosphere that focuses on partnership, perseverance, and patience (with oneself and each other) can be extrapolated to many aspects of life upon return to our jobs, families, and city streets. Take a course with this team and you will learn how to backpack. More importantly, though, you might just learn something far more interesting. -Paul F.
I highly recommend Andrew Skurka Adventures. My backpacking skills, knowledge, and confidence has been ‘leveled up’ because of the great experiences and training I’ve received. You might think you know how to backpack, I know I did, but after going on two Skurka trips I can say I knew much less than I thought I did. I’m now ready for bigger and more adventurous trips. -Josh G.
This was my third trip with Skurka and they just keep getting better. Every year I am blown away by the quality of guides Andrew manages to find. It’s like the ’27 Yankees of wilderness guides. My group was challenged in every way, physically, mentally, and emotionally. We bonded as a team, guides and clients, and broke ground on a new route for Skurka. I don’t know what kind of magic Andrew does to put these groups together, and this one was magical. -James H.
If you look for rugged mountains, thick rainforest with tall trees, glaciers close by, lots of bears and chipmunks, and some thousands of feet of altitude gain daily, then you should go to the Olympic National Park. It is a wonderful place to be and hike. Thanks to the great guides we left the beaten trail and did some mountaineering adventures. Never done a bear hang? No problem, learn it here. Feel sweaty? Lots of deep blue mountain lakes or steams to jump in. Hungry? September is berry time … I had a great time, learnt a lot and made new friends. -Sandy E.
This is my second trip with Skurka Adventures and it did not disappoint. It met my expectations and exceeded in several areas including the location, the quality of guides’ experience and knowledge, and the quality of people in my group. The challenge of hiking the Olympic National Park surpassed my physical expectations, but I managed to survive nonetheless with the help of a team effort from the group, which I really appreciated. I have found after two trips that the people who engage in this type of activity come from a variety of backgrounds but all have a love for the wilderness and are all really quality humans worthy to be around and spend time with in the wilderness. I would encourage anyone looking to explore new challenges and adventures to utilize this company. -Curtis M.
As a first time backpacker, I couldn’t have asked for more knowledgeable guides, a more fun group of people to hike with and learn from, or such an amazing place (Washington) to explore for a week. I learned a ton and walked away with a lot of knowledge, new skills, and an incredible experience! I don’t know how another trip would be able to top it. -Camryn C.
Unbelievable experience. Incredible views, wonderful people, and Skurka beans and rice, what more could you want? -Tiffany L.
I was looking for a learning experience while on an adventure and this trip exceeded my expectations! Bonding with all the individuals of the group and being in the wilderness for an extended period of time helped me enjoy the moment and made for some wonderful memories. The extensive knowledge of the guides helped me feel safe and improved confidence for planning my own adventure. -Matt G.
I loved this trip. I will definitely do another one! -Phil J.
Washington: Expedition
A combination of carefully matched group participants and an excellent guide, with epic routes and pre-trip preparation made for a wonderful exploration of Olympic National park that was both challenging and memorable. -Clare A.
The 11-day [Olympics] trip offered a fantastic tour of the core of the park, traversing from Sol Duc Falls to Lake Cushman. We experienced a wide variety of the park’s ecosystems, from low elevation rainforests along the salmon-populated Elwha River, to higher off-trail alpine ridge lines with wild blueberries and fun rock scrambles. Scott was a great guide; one highlight of the trip was when he taught us how to sneak up on & observe a large herd of wild elk at close range! -James J.
West Virginia: Fundamentals
It is obvious that a LOT of care is put into every step of the planning and execution parts by all the members of the Skurka team. I had already learnt a lot through the online training but I came back from WV equipped with lots of both practical & intangible assets: boost of confidence, tips and tricks, practiced knowledge in the areas of campsite selection, navigation, setting up a fire, first aid etc. The Skurka planning + the location + the Fall colors + the phenomenal guides = 5-star experience (despite the crazy cold and breezy weather). -Anne R.
My trip with Andrew Skurka was everything I had hoped for! They helped me understand how to fully prepare for a backpacking trip, paired me with like-minded individuals, and provided me with guides who were able to ensure a safe trip and build upon my classroom learning to make me feel more comfortable in the backcountry. I’m hoping to take another trip with them in the near future! -Nick L.
-Michael P.
This was a great introductory trip to backpacking full of instruction and education that will leave you feeling more confident and knowledgeable about backpacking solo or in a group. -Rad Z.
Transformative!! You get to go to less-well-trodden gorgeous locations and learn from the best. No coddling, but tons of support, guidance, and friendship. -Kim R.
I look forward to more Skurka trips in the future. The team that was put together was top notch. We were well matched in terms of skills and capabilities, our guides were fantastic. I’ve made what I hope will be lifelong connections and learned valuable skill sets. -Brent R.
Trip was fantastic. West Virginia is beautiful. It was super cold (low 30s at night) but fortunately we missed most of the rain that was forecast. Didn’t sleep well the first night, had to put on wet cold socks the next morning – it was really muddy – but still went out and had a great day. Guides were awesome, everyone on the trip was super cool and happy to be there. 10/10 would recommend. -David K.
The three-day fundamentals trip in West Virginia was the perfect antidote to my lack of experience and confidence in enjoying the rugged wilderness around me. The guides and the pre-trip planning were exceptional. I’ll be signing up again! -Matt L.
I was very pleased with all aspects of the trip and team. Everyone was very knowledgeable and willing to spend plenty of time to make sure you understood all the skill lessons. The guides were always concerned for your safety and willing to help in any way possible. I was somewhat reluctant at first before the trip but just 5 minutes into the hike, all of my concerns were gone and I felt at ease and in good hands. I would absolutely encourage anyone who is even remotely considering backpacking, especially beginners, to sign up on a trip with Andrew Skurka and his team. You will not be disappointed and will be glad you did. -Richard S.
I felt more prepared for this trip than any previous trip ever. -Bjorn B.
I was cold, wet & tired and I’ve never felt more alive! On just a 3 day trip I feel like my mastery of backpacking and most importantly the backcountry increased 10x more than it has in a decade of self taught adventures. -Jason B.
I learned more in three days in West Virginia than I learned on every other backpacking trip I’ve gone on, combined, and I knew a fair bit going in. The planning curriculum is the most comprehensive approach to trip planning I’ve ever seen and the tutorials in the field … there’s nothing like them. YouTube videos just can’t compare. -Christopher T.
The fundamentals course is a great way to learn backpacking skills and gain confidence you need to continue backpacking on your own. -Scott M.
This was an awesome adventure! Informative training by experienced guides – it greatly improved my confidence with backpacking! -Josh G.
-Kristen
West Virginia: Adventure
As someone who usually plans my own trips, I was skeptical about what benefits going on a guided trip would provide, but I was truly amazed at how much more backpacking with a group and knowledgeable guides can add to the experience of backpacking and spending time in the wilderness. -Alan W.
This was my second Skurka trip and I enjoyed it and learned from it just as much – or more – than the first. I have been on a couple of other guided trips and can honestly say the quality of the pre-trip learning and planning and the guides far exceeded those other trips/companies. Specifically, learning to evaluate and plan gear choices, plan routes, and navigate using a compass and map are key skills I learned through my trip. -Kari C.
If you want to enjoy hiking surrounded by the beauty of fall colors, this is the hike for you! Definitely one of my all time favorites. -Paul W.
This was my second Skurka trip, and I’m already contemplating where I should go for my third, fourth, fifth… The experience is amazing and the knowledge gained will last a lifetime. -Kristine F.
Katie and Matt were the perfect match as guides for this trip. Katie’s vast backpacking experience combined with Matt’s knowledge of the landscape made for quite the unique experience. I felt like I learned something new multiple times each day. You could tell they are both passionate and love what they do. After taking this trip I feel more confident about planning my own trip in this region and will have a greater appreciation for my surroundings rather than just taking a trip to crush miles. -Chad M.
Blessed by excellent weather conditions, my 5-day West Virginia trip was fantastic! I was challenged starting with the planning and preparation aspects through arriving at the trailhead at the end of the trek. The planning curriculum did a great job of getting me ready for the field where we put everything into practice. A well-matched group of guides and participants made the trip truly enjoyable. -Dave N.
I’ve already been promoting it at work with two of my coworkers; very interested in next season. -Jessica I took a 5 day Adventure trip with Katie and Matt as the trip guides, and it was a phenomenal experience. Our guides were incredibly knowledgeable and friendly, and imparted so much wisdom on our group. I’m hoping to make a PCT attempt next year, and the skillsets I gained in the pre-trip planning course, as well as in the field while seeing guides re-plan our itinerary in real time, identify usable water sources, and help us navigate off-trail, will be invaluable for preparing me for success on the PCT. I can’t wait to come back and take a longer trip in the future! -Angie
