This email/message board platform is being used by alumni to:

  • Find hiking partners
  • Ask for (and give) suggestions about gear and locations
  • Buy and sell gear

In addition to moderating it, we may occasionally use it as well to notify subscribers about registration dates and about special pricing for last-minute trip openings (described below).

Special pricing for last-minute openings

For the 2024 season we have formalized a system and timeline for discounting open spots that probably would not fill at full freight. Sometimes we have these spots because of low enrollment, but usually it’s because of a late cancellation on a previously full trip. 

The discount is meant to offset the increased travel costs and the compressed planning timeline when someone joins late, and to increase the appeal of these spots.

We will discount available spots starting:

  • 40 days from the start of a trip, at a 40 percent discount; and
  • 25 days from the start of a trip, at a 60 percent discount.

Spots are not eligible for a discount unless it’s announced. If we’re within the discount windows and have not yet made an announcement, you’re welcome to inquire. Discounts will be announced through the Community Hub (above).

These open spots may also be made available to the public. But we will open them up to alumni at least a few days earlier. The discount to the public will be less generous. And we will prioritize alumni over similarly qualified first-time applicants.

Some terms of this program:

  • This discount cannot be combined with other discounts, like the alumni or 2+ group discount.
  • Family or friends of alumni are eligible for this discount if the alumnus is already on the trip (or will be applying as well).
  • Please tip your guides as if you were paying full freight.
