For thirteen seasons I’ve asked our clients to complete a post-trip survey to gather feedback about our guides, locations, meals, and curriculum, plus their overall satisfaction. Reviewing the results is a time commitment — this year it’s a 118-page document, and I have a few more pages of quantitative data! But it’s entirely worthwhile effort, as clients confirm what we’re doing right and give me a checklist of improvements for the next season. Plus, AI has made the process much easier this season!
The 2026 survey was taken by 264 clients, an impressive 79 percent response rate. Confidence in these results should be high, then.
Overall Satisfaction
The first question in the survey is the most important: “Overall, how satisfied are you with your experience?”
I’ve asked this exact question since the beginning, and on a 5-star scale the results have been:
- 2026: 4.83
- 2025: 4.83
- 2024: 4.82
- 2023: 4.81
- 2022: 4.82
- 2021: 4.88
- 2020: 4.88
- 2019: 4.92
- 2018: 4.81
- 2017: 4.88
- 2016: no trips
- 2015: 4.90
- 2014: 4.85
These scores have been remarkably consistent through the years, with just a 0.11 spread between the lowest-rated and highest-rated years. Consider, too, that in this time the program has grown four-fold, that I now guide only 15-20 percent of the trips, and that I now manage a team of people who prepare our clients, gear, and food.
Testimonials from 2026
At the end of the survey, we ask clients to provide a testimonial. Of our 2026 alumni, 135 did. I will share them all here, to thank our clients for being so flattering and to leave no doubt with prospective clients that our program is truly extraordinary. You can also read an additional 114 testimonials from 2025, 207 testimonials from 2024, 204 testimonials from 2023, 262 from 2022, 179 from 2021, 76 from 2020 and 110 from 2019.

“Andrew Skurka Adventures promised an outdoor education component that I could not find anywhere else. I signed up wanting an introduction to backpacking and ended up receiving that instruction in some of the most beautiful canyons I ever could have imagined. Every day we received brief instruction as we encountered new and challenging obstacles. With encouragement from expert guides, our confidence grew bit by bit over each hour of the day. I could not rate the program or its guides any higher.” – Mike M.
“My first Skurka Adventure exceeded all expectations. The entire process from application to finishing the trip ran like a well-oiled machine; every detail thoroughly considered and accounted for in an extremely organized manner. The route was more ‘adventurous’ than expected, but as I had hoped for; not a ‘follow the trail loop’ and call it good. I felt like I experienced much more excitement and variety of terrain because of that. The guides were exceptional, experienced, patient, kind and chill.” – Karen K.
“This isn’t a guided trip where you show up, follow the leader, and then go home. Jeff and Jose brought real technical depth, thoughtfulness, and a level of attentiveness that made a hard week in serious canyon terrain feel well managed and genuinely fun. Spending a week with 9 strangers is daunting for someone who spends a lot of time in the backcountry alone, but the guide team’s empathy and situational awareness helped the group connect meaningfully and almost immediately. It helps that forethought goes into the groupings, and that curriculum is in place to help everyone start socializing before we even meet in person.” – Jason L.
The Andrew Skurka Adventures program changed my life. I was someone who enjoyed hiking and backpacking. I kept the extent of that enjoyment somewhat tempered, and to myself. I didn’t know anyone who wanted to go with me. I used AllTrails to find trails to hike. >> Now I’m someone who absolutely loves hiking and backpacking — and trail running and rock climbing and apparently now canyoneering. Now I’m someone who shouts their love of the outdoors from mountaintops, and at work, and at home, and pretty much all the time everywhere. Now I have a growing network of real, true friends who are excited to go adventuring with me — we’ve already been on several amazing trips together outside of the program and we’ll have more this year and certainly many more after that. Now I look at a map and see possibilities everywhere (slope angle shading!). >> The memories, the friends, the possibilities – all of it brings so much light to my life. It has become my life, in so many ways, and I’m so much healthier, happier, full, and just more real – self-actualized! – because of it. That first trip and everything that has come of it are a true inflection point in my adult life, unlocking what I needed to live closer to myself, and I am so endlessly, incredibly grateful. – Danielle G.
“Don’t go on a Skurka trip if you are looking to be handed a bunch of gear with someone putting up your tent, cooking your food, and telling you which direction to walk and where to put your feet. Do go on a Skurka trip if you desire adventure, value independence/knowledge in the backcountry and want to expand yours, want expert education, enjoy laughing and hanging out with awesome people that value getting out into nature and putting in some sweat equity to return to society with an improved soul.” – Corey M.
“As a lifelong backpacker, I didn’t expect to learn so much, from gear selection to orienteering. I also was surprised by how much I enjoyed the Women’s group. It was super supportive and a delight to share the experience.” – Katy B.
From start to finish, a guided trip with Skurka Adventures is a masterclass is planning, curriculum, experience, and guiding. You will be in the capable hands of the best of the best in terms of guides, and I am confident in my assertion that there is no better guiding outfit to learn and experience the Brooks Range with. As a typically solo/ introverted adventurer, I was nervous about taking a guided trip, especially when taking into account varying fitness and confidence levels. The thought and care that goes into the group dynamics and abilities is evident from the start, and we were very well matched in ability and personality. For those nervous, I can assure you you will be amongst a group of solid and eager folks that will support you to the end. Connections were forged that will never be erased. When considering or reviewing a guided trip, it is the little things that are not often mentioned but stand out and come together to form a truly exceptional experience. These include: efforts to take photos, delicious meals, prioritization of grade-A campsites, medical aid, emotional support, anticipation of needs, and flexibility. Our guides exhibited all of these things and more, which coalesced into an unforgettable, life-changing, epic experience. The guides’ deep expertise and ‘living classroom’ approach fosters an environment of safety that encourages personal growth and refinement of skills. As a result, you will emerge a more confident and knowledgeable backcountry explorer. I entered the Brooks eager yet unsure of my abilities and emerged an exponentially more confident person thanks to the support of our guides. I would strongly recommend a trip with Skurka Adventures to any and all backpackers if you are looking to learn, be challenged, grow personally, hone your skills, and have the experience of a lifetime. I cannot thank the team enough! – Allison W.
At 57 this experience helped me rebuild my fitness and my confidence and lighten my pack to be able to get back into bigger/off trail mountain territory after a half decade of backing down my backpacking aspirations and having doubts I could do it again. The group participants were diverse in age (28-68) and in many other ways and yet we all shared our goals to stretch ourselves, learn off trail travel better, and ended up supporting each other in great ways. The thorough and 1:1 support for preparing gear, food, mapping and fitness set us up for success prior to the trip and the guides provided a strong sense of safety and support throughout the trip. – Kirsten L.
“Besides being a beautiful hike in a very wild, remote location, the trip taught me how to organize and complete a hike in a similar arctic wilderness with minimal infrastructure. Prior to the trip, I had not done any off-trail backpacking. Now, I feel prepared to undertake a substantial trip in the Brooks Range or other similar place in the future.” – Matthew F.
This trip was an immersive educational experience. After over 30 years in the backcountry, I gained significant confidence with off trail navigation. The guides were patient mentors providing gentle guidance and allowing each member of our group to practice our skills and learn from each other. As a thru-hiker with 4000 miles over the past 4 years, I really appreciated getting past the tunnel vision of following the red line. I now feel self assured that if all of my technology failed, I could find my way with a map and compass. – Karen S.

Utah
This was my first multi night backpacking trip in over 30 years and truly was a trip of a lifetime. The Utah desert was beautiful and the weather was near perfect with only our last day being cooler and with a little rain. The guides were top notch and have various experiences and backgrounds that complemented each other. I’m not sure how Andrew and his crew decided who’s going into what group, but our group was unbelievably compatible. Everyone was respectful, willing to listen and share their thoughts and concerns. We all came together as strangers and after 5 days I think we all left as friends. I’d be honored to hike with any of them again. I highly recommend Skurka Adventures and plan to hike with them again in the future. It’s money well spent for this type of adventure. – Eric B.
I had a wonderful trip to Southern Utah with Skurka Adventures. Even before the trip itself, the planning phase and the educational materials they provided were extremely value. I now feel far more confident in my ability to plan my own trips: performing a conditions assessment, planning a route with mapping software, and selecting appropriate gear. And the trip itself was excellent. We spent five days in beautiful terrain, hiking a challenging but manageable course that wowed me every day. Our guides were extremely knowledgeable and experienced and yet totally easygoing and happy to teach even the basics. I will almost certainly take another Skurka trip, but even if I couldn’t, this trip will live on in how I plan and execute all my own future backpacking expeditions. – Graham P.
I learned a lot more from this immersive learning experience than all other UL backpacking info sources combined. Thrilled with the experience and the trip was awesome too. – Peter F.
This was an amazing learning experience. I feel so much more prepared to plan and go on my next backpacking trip. The guides were awesome , other trip members great, and the landscape was spectacular. – Deb F.
My first ASA experience was excellent! The Utah hiking experience was new to me, and due to the classroom and pre-planning, I had a high level of confidence in the trip planners and leaders before we even hit the ground. Our group was very well-matched in skills, abilities, and personalities. It was a very memorable experience, and I’m grateful to have been on this trip, with my team! – Alison N.
I didn’t know what to expect in Utah, but I was prepared by the planning and challenged by the terrain of southern Utah, having come from the east. We were always learning about path finding and how to follow a route using the maps and features of the land. The land is amazing and I now really know what slickrock! I have deepened a sincere appreciation for the work of the guides, their knowledge and experience. This is my second ASA adventure and hope to join another. – Joanne F.
Where do I even begin? I’ve been wanting to go on an AS backpacking trip years, and somehow it still exceeded my already high expectations – it completely blew me out of my Smartwool socks. Starting with the all-star guides, learning from their expertise in real-world conditions will be invaluable to me on future backpacking trips. Their knowledge and skill level are truly unmatched, and I was endlessly inspired hearing about the incredible adventures they’ve accumulated. The group itself was just as memorable. From day one, everyone listened, contributed, and fully showed up for one another. Every person added something valuable, and I’d hike countless miles with this crew again in a heartbeat. Hunter, Jess and the rest of the AS team created a fantastic group dynamic. Add in the incredible meals, breathtaking scenery, and unforgettable miles across five days, and this became one of the best backpacking experiences I’ve ever had. – Meredith D.
My backpacking trip with Skurka Adventures was exceptional. The entire process, from planning to on‑trail navigation, strengthened my skills and confidence as a backpacker. The Skurka team stood out for their expertise and warmth, and I thoroughly enjoyed learning from my guides and connecting with the wonderful group of hikers I shared the journey with. – Brian T.
The trip exceeded my expectations! The pre-work required more time than I realized, but was worth it. I have been backpacking over 40 years, but always learning and want to hone in ultralight backpacking and get better at map and compass! Both of the guides were great with teaching us and were patient with all of us. I loved our route, too. Escalante is an amazing landscape! I loved our group, too; everyone was kind and we had fun! I will be doing more trips with Skurka Adventures! – Jenny M.
If you want to see beautiful places off trail and learn to navigate along the way with the best guides you are in great hands with Skurka Adventures. – Anonymous
The canyons were absolutely breathtaking, and every moment felt unforgettable. I also gained valuable insights into route planning and backcountry decision-making. The guides’ passion and personal, attentive approach made the experience especially meaningful. I feel incredibly fortunate to have been part of such an amazing adventure and will do more w/this group in the future for sure! – Patrick R.
Not your average backpacking trip where you just blindly follow a guide and get catered to. This is a hands on learning experience that helps prepare you for your own adventures and mishaps that can occur while enjoying the outdoors. You’re fully engaged and in charge of your own hike for better or worse(although they steer you back on track before the worse) Highly recommend to level up your backpacking skills! – Beth E.
The trip to Escalante was a great experience. As someone who had never been to the area let alone hiked it, I could not have asked for a better introduction. And while I was hesitant about the group dynamic and typically hike to get away from people, the guides were great at helping keep the conversation moving and observing the group dynamic to make sure everyone’s needs were met and no one was placed too far outside their comfort zone for too long. – Jorge B.
As usual, Skurka Adventures continues to execute on incredible trips. Being able to come with my son made it all the better. Being able to go with someone who knows where to go, how to explore places they haven’t been, and how to make your way through difficult terrain made this a great experience that I wouldn’t have been able to recreate on my own. – David M.
After 3 trips I still can’t wait for the next one!!! You’ve created such a special community and a unique chance to push our limits in a safe environment while adventuring in epic places. – Jordan T.
The ASA program is top-notch. You learn to unpack your fears and lighten your load. The pre-course work is the best way to thoroughly prepare for the adventure. The adventures themselves are next level. I have never seen a program that better works with clients in the field to prepare them for their own ultra-light adventures in the future. I strongly recommend ASA to anyone interested in taking their backpacking to the next level! – Shannon F.
My second trip with Andrew Skurka Adventures was exactly what I expected of it. The location was amazing, there was a lot of off trail travel and the guides are incredibly accomplished, very knowledgeable and just great people. Our group was an excellent fit, both on level of experience and level of fitness. We were tested physically and with navigating ourselves, but there was always room for a veto – although never used – if necessary. Hiking up and down canyons, sleeping under the milky way and navigating unexplored terrain was a blast. – Domingo P.
This was my third guided trip, and my first canyoneering adventure, with Andrew Skurka Adventures, and somehow they still managed to raise the bar. From the start, everything was dialed in: thoughtful planning, a solid curriculum that made sure everyone felt fully prepared, and a perfectly crafted 5-day route packed with variety. We mixed backpacking with adrenaline-filled rappels down 90+ foot canyons, squeezed through tight slot canyons, and even crawled under rocks in places, it felt like stepping into another world. The scenery? Unreal. Highlights like Cosmic Ash Tray looked straight out of another planet. More than just a trip, it opened the door to a whole new side of the outdoors for me. I left with new friends, unforgettable memories, real canyoneering skills, and a strong urge to get back out there and explore even more. – Mohammad A.
I came to this course with hiking experience but zero technical background — canyoneering had always felt just out of reach without the right entry point. Skurka’s five-day course was exactly that. The guides were excellent: knowledgeable, attentive to where each person was in their learning curve, and genuinely good at calibrating challenge to confidence. The terrain did the rest — slot canyons, riparian environments, slickrock, bouldering, and technical rappels packed into a single week. I left with a foundation I trust and an appetite for more. – Lorien K.
Who knew that being throw together with 9 other “rag tag” unknown personalities in the Wilderness for a week could be so much fun! My Canyoneering group gelled in a surprising and fun set of ways. Learning and/or improving skills for hiking, navigating, survival, and now climbing and descending via handling and rope rappel with like minded people in the group setting has been invigorating and fun. Also, any excuse to be out in the Escalante area, hiking those canyons and sleeping under that brilliant starry sky is a win. – Kurt A.
They are a supportive group of leads making outdoor adventures both challenging and accessible. – Paul
Great organization and top rate guides that offer terrific experiences. If you enjoy learning new skills as much as you enjoy the outdoors, this is the opportunity for you! – Steven S.
This was my first Andrew Skurka adventure. All aspects have been meticulously thought out and put in place. From the initial application and vetting process through the wrap-up and survey, one has a chance to experience an excellent curriculum that is devised to suit their interest, fitness and hiking capabilities. Day one where all the groups get together and meet the guides is joyous and invigorating. Once the groups have split off to their own destinations, the trip really begins and the learning, camaraderie and adventure into the back country takes hold. I have never had a week of such intense hiking, learning, incredible scenery and controlled challenge. I was pushed at times but always had the reward at the end whether it be scenery, a water hole, a great conversation with somebody I just met or learning/sharing a new technique to make my hiking travels better. The dedication that Andrew and all the guides put towards creating an environment of learning and challenge is second to none. – Cooke
My first Andrew Skurka trip to Utah exceeded my expectations, from the first online group meeting to the post backpacking lunch, where the alumni group culture of positivity, warmth, skill and high achievement was so apparent. – Kathy R.
Backpacking in Escalante was amazing, a new experience for me in southern Utah. The guides were very knowledgeable and professional. The route was one item that stood out. I would return here in the future. Overall I was very satisfied with this trip. – Damian G.
Skurka Adventures has given me a lot more confidence in my outdoor adventuring capabilities. I feel better prepared in terms of equipment, skills, and experience to tackle more extensive off-trail travel and go for longer distances and time. – Nathan C.
Escalante, Utah. When I traveled it before, I thought I had seen most of it, relished in its beauty and walked some tough places. Man, I was so wrong. This 7 day trip into Escalante created a whole new mindset for me. Going off trail, seeking new pathways, traversing slot canyons, walking to the very top of formations I would never have imagined could be attained and sleeping under the stars night after night. Wow, just wow. Andrew, I thank you and crew for a wonderful trip made all the better by meticulous planning and an abundance of information and courses to get me where I needed to be for the trip. Learning to use a compass, leading the group (a tough one for me), discussing what to look for to establish a route, meeting new people, and finally, eating some damn good camp fare. In the end, I found it wasn’t simply about how fit I was but how much I wanted to push myself to try things I would never in my normal life even think possible. I did it. It was scary at times, humbling at others and most of all, a great adventure:) I will bring my level down a notch for my next excursion with this awesome company. – Joan A.
Second timer here, I’m just as hyped as the first time. Caliber and humanity of the guides are amazing. Everything is designed for skill building. Highly recommended for the best vacation ever. – Can A.
The Utah trip was one of the most worthwhile and rewarding experiences of my life. The 7-day immersion into the Grand Staircase Escalante National Monument allowed me to see and do many, many new things, from walking amongst chunks of petrified wood while squeezing through slot canyons, watching the moon rise and set from one horizon to the other, and experiencing the expertise and kindness of our guides who greatly enhanced the experience of the trip. From beginning to end, I felt as if I were in good hands with all of the people in the Skurka organization. The professionalism of everyone I encountered speaks volumes about the quality of the people that Skurka Adventures attracts. I feel like I gained the skills and confidence to expand my backpacking horizons to more challenging trips in the future. – Joe D.
After 3 treks over 10 years, I can honestly say that ASA is the best. If you want to go light, fast, and far in the wild places of this world, they’re the best game in town! – Scott D.
Skurka moved me from Ground Zero into a realm where I mostly solve my own problems now – gear, skills, food, or training – giving me the freedom and confidence to explore outside the programs. He expanded my wilderness. – John G.
This trip was fantastic. The route featured varied beautiful terrain and a good amount of exploring. I learned how to move in the terrain and on the rock, how to read the landscape features, how to choose a path to walk. The guide team were excellent: encouraging, patient, and enthusiastic about exploring and appreciating the surroundings. – Linda R.
My trip to the Canyons of the Escalante was perfect. The focus on off trail travel and learning was just what I was looking for. We explored a beautiful area. The guides were excellent teachers and supported as much group decision making as was appropriate. – Greg M.
I keep coming back for the people! There’s no one else I’d rather share the journey with. The guides are world-class elite in their knowledge and skill and at their core the most wonderful people. I also get to meet new friends while hiking through unbelievable natural beauty. Reinforce my skills and have any questions answered on the spot so I can immediately start putting in good repetitions. If you want to try something new, come try this! If you’re on the fence, jump off and let’s go! If you think this isn’t for you, how would you like to be pleasantly surprised? Andrew Skurka Adventures, just come and join us, we promise you will have a good time. – Yunan J.
The desert canyonlands are majestic in their unique colors, geology, climate, terrain, flora, & fauna. Navigating off trail allowed for a unique exploration rich with depth, adventure, & solitude. Each team creates their own experience within a palette of beauty. – Gray R.
I couldn’t be happier with my trip to Utah. It was both beautiful and challenging, and I learned so much about navigating and route-finding in that environment. The guides were outstanding, and I gained a ton of knowledge not only from them, but also from the other members of the group. The experience felt very collaborative, with the guides and group working together to make decisions along the way. Even though I was probably the least experienced backpacker in the group, I never once felt out of place or unwelcome. – Dustin S.
The seven day guided trip in Escalante was truly an experience of my lifetime. It far exceeded any expectations I could’ve had. I joined this trip as it’s been 10 years since I’ve hiked a long distance trail. Next year, I am planning to hike the Hayduke Trail. Rather than stumbling my way and suffering unnecessarily on that hike, I decided to prepare by joining this Skurka trip. The classroom experience prior to the trip helped dial in my gear and attain a base weight of 10 pounds. I also gained knowledge about food selection that I had never thought of before. And the trip itself continued to exceed my expectations. My confidence in navigating was a 2/10 prior to the trip and now it is a solid eight. I have a richer understanding of the terrain, what to look for when navigating, as well as the vocabulary to articulate what it is that I am experiencing. I feel prepared to find and carry water and zigzag my way through canyons and creek beds. The scenic beauty was beyond words, and I was able to truly immerse in this experience with complete mindfulness. Finally, as an introvert, I didn’t expect to bond or enjoy the social aspect of the group as much as I did, and I found myself incredibly comfortable and grateful for those who I walked alongside. I especially enjoyed partnering up with other group members as we alternated taking the lead in navigating. I would 100% plan for a reunion with my group in the future if it was possible! – Mary M.
The best of the best want to guide for Skurka. If you want to be lead by, and learn from the best, join a trip, or two. – Pat K.
I’ve been an avid backpacker for 20+ years now and one of my favorite things about backpacking is that I continue to learn something new on every trip. This 7-day Escalante expedition was an exceptional learning experience, even for a seasoned hiker. I learned so many tips and tricks from our guides Andrew Skurka and Katie Gerber and was able to fill in some of the gaps in my backcountry experience, such as map and compass navigating. We got to help navigate and make route decisions as we went, which made me feel like an active member of a team and not just a guided participant. I would definitely take another trip with this company! – Mary M.
These trips provide a great opportunity to learn and refine backcountry skills while experiencing amazing locations. – Mark H.
Sarah and Audrey are amazing guides to spend a week with. They are certified bad asses with the touch of a kindergarten teacher. I would follow them anywhere. – Jason L.
This was a challenging and fun trip in a gorgeous setting. I was with a team of guides and clients that were hand picked to have skills and interests that would complement mine. I got the guidance I needed to be successful at something I’d never tried before. – Mary Ellen W.
This was my first trip with this company. I found all the pre-trip coursework built up well to the end of the course/beginning of the trip. I thought all of the guides and instructors were helpful in the build-up, tirelessly answering questions. In the town of Escalante, guides and others were helpful and accommodating and patient. The trip itself was amazing. The guides were knowledgeable, kind and helpful. Had an amazing time. – Aaron K.
This trip exceeded all my expectations. I came in with a mixed bag of skills and abilities, yet always felt appropriately challenged under the guidance of two very skilled and patient leaders. I learned new skills, sharpened others, and enjoyed the company of like-minded adventurers while immersed in unimaginable beauty. – Tammy G.
If you want to enter a world you thought you might never be able to, try an adventure with Andrew’s team. After three hikes I can see the quality of the choice of locations. They all exceeded my expectations from my general reading and conversations with friends. The attention to fitting my groups together for skill and fitness was successful. That was the most important aspect for me. I came to have fun, discover, and be challenged. That is what I came away with. – Larry M.
I have been backpacking for more than 50 years and am quite comfortable on my own – except in the desert. I am mildly paranoid about having water. Hiking with Skurka guides gives me the confidence that we will always find water. And I get the added benefit of a social hike with like-minded people who were an absolute joy to become acquainted with. Some of us are already talking about planning a Yellowstone hike next year. On the final morning of my first Skurka hike, I was trudging up a hill and turned around to see the morning sun over a mountain of Navaho sandstone. Then I looked at the ground near my feet and saw a globemallow and small cactus in perfect bloom. The emotional impact of that moment overwhelmed me and I cried. No such outcome on this hike. The emotional highlight occurred mid-week while wading in the creek bottom of Death Hollow. The contrast couldn’t be greater than that of the tiny riparian corridor winding through such towering majestic canyon walls of sandstone, some white, some red, some stained darker. The enormity of the wilderness hits me sometimes, and this was one of those times. I told our guide Witt that I need a dictionary of superlatives to help describe this place. Some times I talk too much, but I ran out of words. I live in the rain infused evergreen Pacific northwest, so the southwest desert country is a very stark contrast. And I am forever changed for getting to better know this arid canyon country that, at first, appears so barren. Until I looked closely and found that there is so much life to see. And Skurka hikes take me to parts of the desert canyon country that I would not venture to on my own. – Steve F.
My Skurka Adventure in Utah exceeded my expectations! The guides were engaging, supportive and taught me so much! Our group was well matched, and I have no doubt we’ll remain friends. – Judy F.
I had the best time in the Escalente. The timing was ideal; time of year that is. The guides earned my trust. They challenged us and I learned from them. As a result of the classwork, I felt prepared. As for training, I learned that hiking is the best training for hiking and I totally agree. Judging from decreased soreness following training hikes, my training did result in better fitness. Finally, my fellow mates over the five days got along marvelously. Andrew and Katie managed to match us up perfectly. I fully intend to take another adventure with Team Skurka. – Dan C.
I enjoyed an off-trail hiking trip with Andrew Skurka Adventures in the Sierras so much that I returned for a trip in Utah’s Grand Staircase–Escalante National Monument. Everything about the trips is world class: the locations, the guides, the preparation, and the care that goes into putting together both the groups and the routes. The company may have more detailed knowledge about the backcountry territories than many of the workers caring for those places; you can’t be in better hands. – Jan M.
I had some anxiety about backpacking for 5 days in a very remote area with maps and a compass as the primary method of navigating and also exposure during class 3 scrambling on slick rock. However, the quality of instruction provided by our guides was stellar while also making sure everyone was engaged in all aspects of the trip. This resulted in a positive team approach to safely solve route finding challenges and gaining experience/skills that will be invaluable for future solo trips. Overall, my expectations going into the outing were vastly exceeded! – Joel M.
The most amazing trip ever. The full experience of Escalante. It could not have been better. – Paul T.

Alaska
Jeff and Witt were a powerhouse of a guiding team in Alaska. Their outdoor leadership, knowledge, the ability to convey their knowledge, and ambassadorship for our wilderness areas are some of the best that I’ve experienced. – James W.
I had a wonderful experience exploring a cool place with a group of good people and exceptional guides. Thanks Andrew! – Will G.
For the second year in a row, the trip guides were amazing in terms of knowledge, attitude, and skill. – Brad
As has been my experience in previous trips, I was able to thoroughly enjoy CAAR with the thorough preparation and advice from ASA. Such a remote and challenging destination requires frequent adjustments to initial plans and the Guiding team did that very effectively. Instruction during the trip enriched the experience immensely – I felt a lot more capable at the end of it. The Guiding team’s ability to help everyone when in tight spots almost magically made us transcend our fears and doubts. It’d be easy for all this support to lead to a feeling of “being guided” or coming along as a tourist, but the Guiding team shows a superb acceptance and respect for each and everyone, developing a collaborative relationship in all situations. A very special experience of the outdoors and its human dimension. – Jorge L.
Trip the Brooks Range with Andrew Skurka Adventures was great. It was such a cool experience to be able to go to such a remote environment and feel that within just eleven days I was able to read the landscape better and felt more comfortable in that wild of a place. The guides brought so much experience and teaching, yet made me feel like a member of a team rather than being “hand held” through the experience. It was tough but taking it one day, and sometimes one step, at a time made it an unforgettable trip. I hope to return someday – Megan M.
From pre-trip planning, travel logistics to the trip itself, Andrew and his exceptional team delivered yet another fantastic experience in the Brooks Range. Despite multiple route modifications due to high waters, snowy conditions and some injuries, the trip felt adventurous and was highly rewarding. Additionally, the wonderful quality of all the trip members and genuine caring from the guides is why I will continue returning on future trips. – Ralph “chip” W.
I was lucky enough to participate in the Alaska Gates of the Arctic trip through Skurka Adventures with amazing guides Scott Christy and Sarah Stratton! We lucked out with sunny weather and our guides led us through an amazing week of route finding and Arctic learnings in very remote Alaska. Even after having backpacked (just on-trail) for 10 years, I still learned an incredible amount about general backpacking tips and skills, along with learning lots of new skills – route finding, improving topographic map reading skills, compass navigation, safe river crossing techniques, and knot skills. I got to learn all of this in the most amazing setting I’ve ever been, and got to learn lots of facts and hear stories about the Arctic from our super knowledgeable, friendly, and encouraging guides! Scott and Sarah led us through all these new skills and did a great job helping us learn by doing – letting us lead the way while getting advice from them as we applied the new skills we learned. I also really appreciated how well matched our group was. We all got along and were similar enough paces to all be able to get what we wanted to out of this trip. You can tell that the team really puts a lot of thought and care into how these groups get formed. The trip planning was immaculate and I felt fully safe with our guides the entire time. I highly recommend a trip to this part of remote Alaska through Skurka Adventures – this is a trip that will stay with me for a long time! – Casey H.
This trip was like no other. Intense for all kinds of reasons and on many levels. It was rich in being present. I felt so big (full of awe and disbelief) and so little there. The terrain, weather, plants, animals, people, challenge. It was all there. – Agnes
My trip to Alaska was everything I hoped it would be. We saw grizzlies, navigated high mountain passes and low wet tussock fields. I had already thru-hiked the PCT but learned so much more from experienced guides who helped me further refine my skillset. It was fun, rewarding, and an overall great experience. I would highly recommend! – Brett
It was a true adventure! Totally back country. – Steve A.
I participated in an Alaskan trip at the age of 67. I did just fine. Don’t shy away from participating because of your age. – Tim C.
Everything was exceptionally handled with thoughtful consideration, including logistics, expert guides, group member selection and trip location. -TW – Tonnis W.
I am so grateful for this trip. With decades of personal backpacking behind me, nothing compares to my Alaska Brooks Range experience. The guides were knowledgeable and trustworthy, the group members interesting and collaborative, the setting more than I expected. This adventure will live in me for a long time, coloring my future endeavors. – Bonnie
After years of backpacking and leading trips myself I was looking to expand my range of opportunities in the backcountry and have a peak experience. Going on the Alaska Adventure with Aaron and Katie was all of that and also a great learning experience. – Jay F.
After years of Sierra Club and ADK and AMC backpacking trips, developing my own ways and means, it was a pleasurable and enlightening experience to plan and backpack with the Skurka group. The planning curriculum really helped to develop a deeper understanding of what I needed to bring and what was a want. The tools that were provided were extremely helpful. The group that was put together for this trip was a total win. Guides, Jeff and Witt, provided excellent guidance and teaching. We all got the opportunity to lead and route find. Really just so pleased with the adventure in the Brooks Range. – Caroline
The Alaska expedition exceeded my expectations in every way and was immensely satsifying in every way: group, physical intensity, and, of course, scenery and environmental learning. – Scott G.
Skurka Adventures has really elevated my backpacking experience! I’ve been backpacking all of my life, but never off trail and never with such a great group of experienced people! The guides and fellow hikers have much more experience than most of my backpacking pals, and so I have found my people! – Christine S.
You will return from one of these trips improved as a backpacker and as a human. Either is a compelling reason to sign up; both make it a no brainer. – Marvin K.
This trip was the best week I have ever had in the outdoors. Andrew and Nadine are exceptional guides and humans who have so much knowledge to share. I am leaving this trip with lifelong friends and so much new knowledge that will help me feel more confident in the outdoors. I cannot recommend these trips highly enough. – Meredith B.
What can I say? This was an adventure of a lifetime that is difficult to capture in words. The scenery was breathtaking, the route was diverse and challenging, the company – amazing. It was a privilege to be guided by Andrew and Nadine. I couldn’t recommend this trip highly enough. – Paul K.
Skurka testimonial · MD This was my third trip with Skurka Adventures, so I already knew this wouldn’t be a show-up-and-follow-the-leader kind of experience — and it still exceeded what I remembered. Over the course of the trip, eight complete strangers turned into a genuine team, and by the end we felt like we’d known each other for years. What sets Skurka Adventures apart is that you actually learn backpacking — real skills like route-finding, pacing, pack weight management, water sourcing and reading terrain — instead of just being herded from camp to camp. The routes were challenging in the best way, and the views were the kind that stop you mid-step and make you just stand there and stare. I came home a more capable backpacker and with eight new friends I never expected to make. Highly recommend for anyone who wants to grow, not just check off a trail – M E.

California
The trip was somehow all of humbling, empowering, and exhilarating. I’ve traveled the world but backpacking through Yosemite will always stand out. Thanks for a great trip. – Tom C.
I recently completed the 5-day Fundamentals course in Yosemite, and it was an incredible experience. The 10-week pre-course curriculum gave me a strong foundation and helped me build a pack that was lighter than I ever imagined possible. The gear library was also fantastic, allowing me to test equipment I had only seen online before making my own investment. During the trip, I learned practical skills ranging from off-trail navigation with a map and compass to cooking on an ultralight alcohol stove, evaluating safe water sources, and practicing safer backcountry handwashing techniques. The hands-on learning gave me a new level of confidence and understanding. Most importantly, I had the opportunity to explore a stunning landscape I had never experienced before. I left feeling more capable, confident, and excited to continue backpacking. I highly recommend the Fundamentals course to anyone looking to build real backcountry skills while having an unforgettable adventure. – Heather D.
For full disclosure, I had never gone backpacking, camping, and had virtually no knowledge about anything backcountry prior to this trip. This ended up being one of the most challenging, but also educational, rewarding, and fun experiences I’ve ever had. We got to do things I never imagined I’d do, like traveling off trail for much of the trip, crossing a mountain pass, and cooking up some edible wild plants, all while feeling safe and supported. My guides (Jose and Nicco) were truly top-notch, and they also do an excellent job putting together groups that make the experience even more enjoyable. The planning curriculum leading helped me get all my gear, food, and clothing dialed in before the trip and the breakfast and dinners that were provided were tasty. I left feeling confident that I have the knowledge and skills to plan and execute a backpacking trip on my own, and I’d absolutely love to join another ASA trip in the future! – Brianna A.
ASA has built a community of guides and returning clients who are not just high level backpackers but fantastic educators and people. Even if you’re a total novice (like me), if you do the coursework, you will be more than prepared for a Fundamentals trip, and you will return looking for ways to level up on your next trip. – Louis
My first trip with Andrew Skurka Adventures taught me new skills, helped me overcome fears, and gave me the confidence to tackle things that I’d previously only dreamed about. We visited places that will live inside me for the rest of my life, and I am permanently changed for the better by the experience. – Sven A.
ASA opened a whole new world of outdoor adventure for my partner and I. The pre-trip curriculum and course provided highly advanced training that accelerated our backpacking preparedness from no experience level to very confident and ready to explore longer, off trail routes on our own. – Nick D.
I went into this trip with high expectation and they were completely exceeded. I loved that learning was incorporated into the entire experience. Even as a longtime backpacker I came away with new tips and techniques that I will continue to use. Our group was such a good match and the guides were knowledgeable, thoughtful, and genuinely cared about making sure each of us got what we wanted out of the trip. I’m already planning to sign up for another one next year. – Molly R.
Hands down the best decision I’ve made all year! My main goal for this trip was to step out of my comfort zone—I wanted to get comfortable navigating off-trail, plotting routes with a map and compass, and feeling confident in the backcountry. Safe to say, my expectations weren’t just met—they were completely blown out of the water! Kat and Jess were an absolute dream team. They made the learning process so approachable and turned the whole adventure into a total blast. I’m already planning my next trip! – Anonymous
Skurka Adventures offers a solid crash course in everything you need to know to safely and confidently backpack in the backcountry. – Peg S.
This was my second trip with Skurka Adventures. The terrain was higher and more difficult than my last one, but the group was amazing. The guides were invested in our safety and in our enjoyment–the love of nature and being in nature was palpable in all the hikers and the guides. There was something special about our group of just women–empowering, supportive, transcendent–we all just fit as friends, taking care of each other, enjoying being in amazing places that you can’t get to any other way. I felt safe but also challenged, and accomplished in ways that I don’t in my regular life. The whole experience was pretty magical. – Maurine W.
This was a wonderful trip, all around. Our group of women were well-matched, and I believe we all had a great trip in the Sierras, one of the most beautiful places in the world! We were challenged by the terrain and at times the heat and elevation, but we all left with new friends and the satisfaction of accomplishment on this wilderness hike. – Alison N.
I had high hopes for my trip, and these were far exceeded. Each step of the process, from the initial application to the actual trip, felt intentional and well-designed. The pre-trip curriculum was sufficiently thorough to help me feel adequately prepared without overwhelming me. The trip itself was beyond excellent. In addition to being a wealth of knowledge about backpacking and the trip location, our guides (Andrew and Andy) were a genuine pleasure to travel with. The scenery was spectacular. The physical challenge felt well matched to my ability, and our group seemed carefully constructed. I would recommend any Skurka trip without reservation. – Jj R.
As a repeat client, I can only say that Skurka has once again provided an exceptional experience with an epic location and route, plenty of adventure, and copious instruction and hands-on training. Expect to be guided on a trip you couldn’t or wouldn’t attempt on your own, but will succeed in this group setting. And also as a repeat client, I am impressed that careful attention is paid to each client’s satisfaction, every time. – Greg J.
I am a huge fan of Andrew Skurka and his team. They are outstanding in all ways: communications, knowledge, skills, educational, and caring. On my most recent trip to the High Sierra they were constantly checking in on us and adjusting plans to make it a very fun while still challenging trip. Giving us time to cool off in the mountain lakes was especially appreciated. They do an excellent job of matching participants in capabilities. They lead and joined wonderful discussions with all of us. I especially enjoyed hearing about the mountain trees, wildflowers, geology and wildlife. – Nabeel A.
This was my 3rd trip with Skurka trips. And I feel like I’ve learned more than enough to be an independent backpacker. I’ve been pushed (gently) to do things I didn’t know I could. So now I can do the normal stuff with a lot of confidence. – Morteza A.
What a trip! It was a treat to dive into the wilderness of SEKI, away from the road and tourists and spend 5 days in the backcountry. Alpine lakes to swim in daily, passes and granite to explore. The guides made this trip approachable and achievable for the whole group. Top notch. – Alix M.
Even as an experienced backpacker, I learned a lot from these trips. I also have appreciated the opportunity to become part of a community of guides and guests who appreciate the mountains as much as I do. – Matt B.
This was my second trip with Skurka Adventures and it did not disappoint. If you want to learn state-of-the-art backpacking skills on spectacular routes with experienced/expert guides, this is the way to do it. – Cory M.
I thought this was an awesome experience. The trip that I went on, High Sierra CA, was as advertised “Perfect weather, majestic mountains, alpine lakes, fascinating glaciology, Grade A trails, and world-class off-trail opportunities”. The guides, Katie and Brandon were awesome. They answered our questions, helped guide to our group decisions, and the knowledge and experience they have was excellent. A few of the things we learned; map reading, off course navigation, and how to judge water consumption. The whole experience was great. – Jason W.
I’ve gone on multiple adventures and each are unique, challenging, exhilarating and superbly managed. It’s one of the highlights that look forward to throughout the year. – David G.
On this trip I learned again that we are capable of more than we give ourself credit for and that we can all do hard things. – Tessa S.
The pre trip curriculum and the trip exceeded all my expectations, which were high. Everything was delivered to very high standards. I had an amazing backpacking trip, with real off trail travel all the group could chart the course for. The location and route were beautiful and challenging for my level of experience and capability. The provided food was delicious and exposed me to some new recipes I can use in the future. Our group was well matched in terms of fitness and abilities, besides being full of interesting and engaging folks. These are a tribute to the careful candidate screening and assessment Andrew and his team do – much more extensive than any other organization I have been with. There was a big emphasis on having fun while learning and having an appropriately challenging physical and mental experience that helped me expand my capabilities. I plan to join a future trip. If you want to take your backpacking skills to another level and have an amazing time doing it, join a Skurka Adventures trip! – Frank H.
What an extraordinary week I had with Andrew Skurka Adventures in Yosemite. I had backpacked the Sierras several times before my trip, so didn’t expect to have such a new and unique experience. But this was really the best time I have had in the wilderness yet. I learned so much, especially that off-trail travel is so interesting and engaging compared to sticking to the trails. I now have the confidence to plan my own routes for my next visit. The guides were entertaining, inspiring, and motivating while also adapting to the group interest and abilities. We all marveled at how we pushed ourselves farther than we thought possible. I also appreciate Skurka’s ability to match the participants up so well in terms of ability and personality. I truly enjoyed everyone’s company and hope I have the opportunity to hike with them again someday. I would look forward to a class reunion! – Brandon W.
I signed up for a Skurka trip because I wanted level up my skills, specifically off-trail backpacking. Not only did I learn enough to feel confident off trail, I had a great time and met amazing people. 10/10 highly recommended – Addie

I especially appreciated how well the trip balanced learning, wilderness experience, and physical challenge. I would absolutely join another trip. – Eric S.
California 2A Yosemite trip was amazing! The routes were gorgeous and we had a mix of trails and backcountry travel. The guides Sarah and Nicco were awesome and delightful to be around. The food planning and breakfast/dinner recipes were exceptionally useful as it provide a tested/trusted framework to start building your own style. The field experience was a phenomenal experience that “glue” everything from the paper to the real world. – John D.
I got everything I came for and more from my trip! I wanted to experience what it might be like to be a thru-hiker, as I hadn’t been on a week long trip in a long time, and never one near a major trailhead(PCT/John Muir). Now that I have gotten so much off-trail travel experience, I would be so bored with just staying on trail! 🤪 I left the trip super confident that I could plan my own trips for myself/friends/family in the backcountry, which was my #1 goal. I learned so much from others on the trip and thoroughly enjoyed the conversations I had with the other hikers on the trip. Well done, Skurka! 👏 – James S.
The Skurka trip exceeded my expectations. Katie and Witt’s knowledge and presence really made the trip exceptional. They were open and made one feel comfortable asking questions and fostering skills in the field no matter your experience level. The company clearly put real thought into group matching: pairing us by drive and fitness level so that it was enjoyable and challenging. I came away with off trail hiking skills that I didn’t have before. The trip prep support was fantastic. I was able to streamline my backpacking system, learn how much food I really need to bring, and gain the basic skills to use multiple tools to navigate off trail. Just completed my second year as a Skurka participant, and plan to return next year. The quality of the guides and the learning they impart is truly exceptional. Couldn’t ask for better. – James J.
As a flatlander from Florida, I knew the altitude and rugged terrain of the Emigrant Wilderness was going to be a difficult personal challenge that would push my physical limits. I got just what I asked for. My guides Katie and Witt were incredibly patient and highly skilled. I felt safe in their hands. Thanks to the meticulous pre-trip prep, I stepped onto the trail 12 pounds lighter than my previous backpacking trip. Because much of my gear was brand new—specifically my backpack and ultralight tent—I was nervous about dialing it all in. Katie and Witt helped me through mastering my new setup and taught me real-world off-trail navigation. I still have a lot of work to do, but I left the trip as a more confident and light(er) weight backcountry hiker. I can’t recommend them enough! – Prudence M.
My trek into the Emigrant Wilderness and Stanislaus National Forest began with a curiosity about the area and turned into a truly gratifying experience. It was full of discovery, awe, fun, and, at times, challenging, but it was always enjoyable, kind of easy thanks to the well-prepared Skurka team before the trek and the exceptional guides, Brandon and Christy, during it. They not only led our group through the most amazing sights in the wilderness but also fostered a sense of synergy among us by involving each of us in their lives throughout those seven days. They gave us the energy and confidence we needed when it mattered most. They selflessly shared their knowledge and care for each of us at each step we marched through the lovely (very remote) areas they took us to. Thank you, Brandon and Christy. You made my trek the most gratifying experience. – J. Fernando S.
As someone “returning to longer adventures” after many years away, this program provide a thorough framework for planning and executing a modern, minimalist approach. The up front coursework is thorough and takes a bit of time but it all pays off in the field. The navigation practice – every day in the field – was exceptional and confidence building. – Sam F.
My trip to Stanislaus National Forest with Skurka Adventures gave me the confidence I wanted to backpack further and longer than I’ve gone before, and to open my eyes to the possibilities of the backcountry and adventures beyond trails. I was challenged and I was inspired, and I’m looking forward to coming back again! – Ange Z.
Skurka adventures vastly exceeded my expectations and gave me more than enough confidence that I can explore the backcountry, including on my own for days at a time. My group had lovely and talented people who have inspired me to do more and harder things outdoors. I hope to go on many more Skurka adventure trips in the future! – Ange Z.
This is the premier backpacking team in America. Friendliest guides and challenging routes that come with a rewarding experience – Aj C.
Just came back from the amazing Skurka’s 7 days High Sierra Trip and loved everything. The trip is a wonderful way to learn navigating off-trail trekking in the High Sierra from expert guides who provided us a hand-on learning environment. I had the opportunity to access difficult terrain that I wouldn’t feel confident an comfortable to do on my own. The Sierra high passes offered spectacular views that few people have the opportunity to experience. I will definitely come back to Skurka’s trips regularly in the future, and highly recommend the trip to anybody who loves outdoor adventure and the splendid High Sierra. – Lucy L.
Andrew Skurka runs–hands down–the best, most dialed hiking adventures! Everything from pre-trip planning and instruction, to gear suggestions & guidance (he wrote the National Geographic guide on this afterall), meal planning, and route navigation are well thought out and shared. His guides are the best in the business with years of back country and leadership experience. They carefully match skills and fitness levels so the entire group feels challenged and exhilarated but not soul-crushed. Expedition behavior and best practices are shared. The guides truly love what they do and generously share their expertise whether it’s providing real-time guidance on a talus-filled descent or tightening up your tent for tough conditions. They are patient with instruction–especially with all important navigational skills. I especially appreciated learning about the geology of the sierras as well as different flora and fauna. Well worth the investment of time and money. If you love the back country and want to improve your skills as well as have the experience of a life time, I highly recommend Skurka’s trips! – Nicole E.
My second Skurka Adventure trip was another spectacular adventure. The location was amazing and the guides knowledge and skills were top-notch! – Karen
ASA is unique group and business that I’m delighted to support and enjoy being on their trips where 3 things are always true: 1. spectacular locations and routes, especially when off-trail 2. Guides who are nice people and amazing resources to learn from 3. Meeting people who inspire and challenge me in new ways. Every ASA trip stretches me just short of my limits, but gives me more confidence to do my own trips, dialed back to 80%, which I enjoy more 😉 – Suresh C.
I came to Skurka Adventures with some previous backpacking experience, but the two trips I’ve taken with them this year have dramatically expanded my skills, confidence, and knowledge. I’ve learned a tremendous amount—not just about backpacking techniques and equipment, but about how to travel safely and thoughtfully through challenging, remote environments. Perhaps most importantly, Skurka Adventures has enabled me to experience places I would have been far too intimidated to visit on my own, including remote areas of the High Sierras and Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. Having experienced guides who know the terrain and understand how to navigate these environments made it possible for me to venture well beyond my comfort zone and discover some truly remarkable places. The trips have also been a wonderful way to meet interesting, like-minded people who share a passion for backpacking, adventure, and the outdoors. I’ve made friendships with several people I met on these trips and continue to stay in touch with them. And the guides are exceptional. They are knowledgeable, experienced, patient, and generous with what they know. You come away from a Skurka trip not only a better backpacker, but with a deeper knowledge of and appreciation for our country’s wild places. I can’t recommend Skurka Adventures highly enough. If you want to expand your backpacking skills, explore places you might not have the confidence to tackle on your own, and share the experience with a great group of people, I highly recommend taking a trip with Skurka Adventures. – Brian H.
I had high expectations for the trip and they were greatly exceeded. We had an amazing route, guides, and group. I gained the skills and confidence for future adventures. – Kyle W.
Skurka adventures offers what many other guides skip, the opportunity to bring you along through the whole process of trip preparation, planning and education. Once you’ve prepared and the trip begins, you really feel like you’re more a part of the trip , not just someone following along. The guides do a phenomenal job of making you feel included in the decision making, and the people in your group are all seeking a similar outcome- becoming more confident and comfortable in the outdoors. When situations arise that are out of your comfort zone, the guides become professionals again and you’re glad to be in excellent hands. At every level, I think Skurka adventures offers opportunities to make that leap and do something that feels a little out of your comfort zone. – Jenny M.
Our trip pushed us physically + mentally which made us feel like we accomplished something special! – Jeff S.
I’ll say it again: you can watch YouTube videos for another year, or you can take a trip with Andrew Skurka Adventures and learn what really works. – Michael D.
My Yosemite High Sierra trip with Andrew Skurka Adventures was an incredible experience. The scenery was absolutely spectacular, and there is something special about experiencing such an amazing part of the Sierra from the backcountry. The guides were knowledgeable, professional, and, just as importantly, had great personalities. They created a fun and comfortable atmosphere throughout the trip and brought together a great group of people to share the experience with. This was another memorable Skurka adventure and a great reminder of why I keep coming back. My trip with Skurka adventures exceeded my expectations. I saw so much varying terrain, swam in mountain lakes and rivers, hiked through alpine meadows while learning about the native plants and flowers, slept under the stars, and climbed a peak! It was truly a full-value Sierra Nevada experience! – Anonymous
Backpacking in the High Sierra with Andrew Skurka Adventures was like a dream come true. The scenery was incredible, the guides were thoughtful and knowledgeable teachers, and I came away with 7 lifelong friends from our group. I can’t wait to sign up for my next one! – Rick A.
This Skurka trip was memorable for a lot of reasons, but Jose and Hazel were at the center of what made it so special. Jose was phenomenal. His backcountry résumé is obviously impressive, though I assume that is true of all Skurka guides. What really distinguished him was that he is, first and foremost, a teacher at heart. It was clear how much genuine joy he gets from sharing knowledge, and he did it with consistency, patience, levelheadedness, humor, and creativity. That combination made it easy to trust him, which is especially important in the backcountry, where the guide-client dynamic depends so much on confidence and mutual respect. In an era when outdoor culture can sometimes feel overly polished, commercialized, or shaped by social media, Jose felt refreshingly authentic. He reminded me of someone from another time, in the best possible way, more in the tradition of classic Yosemite climbers or true dirtbag thru-hikers than anything resembling a YouTube influencer. Dare I say, a Dharma Bum? I am curious whether Jose will smile or cringe at that. Probably both. His technical skills were excellent and obvious, but what stood out most was his ability to teach and the sense that he approaches the outdoors not just as an expert, but as an artist. Hazel brought a completely different, equally valuable energy. His enthusiasm for the natural world, especially the flora, was unmatched. He began identifying plants within the first few minutes on trail and more or less never stopped. Somehow, it was never annoying. That was partly because Hazel is so likable, but also because his knowledge and excitement were completely genuine. His curiosity was contagious. Over the course of the trip, that enthusiasm became much more than interesting commentary. It gave me a way to redirect myself during difficult moments. When I was exhausted from poor sleep, anxious, or afraid, Hazel’s attention to the surrounding landscape would pull me back into curiosity and appreciation. Whether or not he realized he was doing it, he repeatedly helped shift my perspective from discomfort or fear toward mindfulness and presence. One moment captured this perfectly. Near the end of a challenging pass, there was still one precarious section remaining before we were fully through the hairy terrain. I noticed some beautiful ferns, Alpine Ladies, and started talking with Hazel about them. That small exchange moved me out of anxiety and fatigue and back into appreciation of where I was. A moment later, I walked through the final section almost nonchalantly and reached the top. Hazel’s ability to help people reconnect with their surroundings felt like a form of backcountry mindfulness or meditation. He also carried himself with such competence that I often forgot he was technically serving in a supporting role rather than as the lead guide. Together, Jose and Hazel created an experience that felt skilled, safe, educational, joyful, and deeply human. Jose taught us how to move through the backcountry with greater knowledge and confidence; Hazel continually reminded us to look closely at the world we were moving through. I left the trip with stronger outdoor skills and more self confidence, but most importantly, feeling a sense of community and connection. – Ryan B.
