If you have ever attempted to plan a serious backcountry trip in Alaska, you’ve likely come across the name Roman Dial. Put simply, Roman is a legendary Alaskan adventurer. He made multiple first ascents on peaks in the Hayes Range, he was a pioneer in both fatbiking and packrafting, he has won multiple Alaska Mountain Wilderness Classic races, and he walked 1000 kilometers unsupported across the state’s most remote area.
Roman was also a longtime professor and researcher at Alaska Pacific University, and a husband to Peggy and father of two. He authored The Adventurer’s Son; and you may have recently seen him in the film Arctic Alchemy.
Topics covered:
- The early days: the progression of his outdoor skills and trips, including alpinism, hiking, fat biking, packrafting, and skiing;
- The Brooks Range: what makes it unique or special, information for someone contemplating a trip there, and stories from his trips there;
- Roman’s academic career; and
- Issues facing the Brooks Range: climate change, acidification, and the Ambler Road.
