207 testimonials from our 2024 season

For eleven seasons I’ve asked our clients to complete a post-trip survey to gather feedback about our guides, locations, meals, and curriculum, plus their overall satisfaction. Reviewing the results is a time commitment — this year it’s a 107-page document, and I have a few more pages of quantitative data! But it’s entirely worthwhile effort, as clients confirm what we’re doing right and give me a checklist of improvements for the next season.

The 2024 survey was taken by 291 clients, an impressive 82 percent response rate. Confidence in these results should be high, then.

Overall Satisfaction

The first question in the survey is the most important: “Overall, how satisfied are you with your experience?”

I’ve asked this exact question since the beginning, and on a 5-star scale the results have been:

  • 2024: 4.82
  • 2023: 4.81
  • 2022: 4.82
  • 2021: 4.88
  • 2020: 4.88
  • 2019: 4.92
  • 2018: 4.81
  • 2017: 4.88
  • 2016: no trips
  • 2015: 4.90
  • 2014: 4.85

These scores have been remarkably consistent through the years, with just a 0.11 spread between the lowest-rated and highest-rated years. Consider, too, that in this time the program has grown three-fold, that I now guide only 15-20 percent of the trips, and that I now manage a team of people who prepare our clients, gear, and food.

Testimonials from 2024

At the end of the survey, we ask clients to provide a testimonial. Of our 2024 alumni, 207 did. I will share them all here, to thank our clients for being so flattering and to leave no doubt with prospective clients that our program is truly extraordinary. You can also read an additional 204 testimonials from 2023262 from 2022179 from 202176 from 2020 and 110 from 2019.

I have been on a lot of guided trips, but this was by far the best in terms of how well organized it was, the itinerary, and the instruction. In fact this is less of a guided trip and more of a hands-on classroom, but with the guides there to make sure everyone’s goals are met. Even for people who have been backpacking for years, you will certainly learn something, or get to practice your skills in a new way. The type of clients who choose to participate in a Skurka trip are there to learn, which means that everyone is engaged and excited to be there, which also adds to the learning experience. The guides we had on our canyoneering trip were inclusive, knowledgeable, open-minded, friendly, and funny. This trip was a life bucket list trip and it did not disappoint! -Erika L.

This is my third Skurka trip, so clearly something’s working for me. Two things keep me coming back. First, the group: the program does a fantastic job forming groups that are matched in experience and fitness level. It’s super satisfying to be traveling with a group of peers who all can support and back up each other. Second, education. I come back from each Skurka trip with my head buzzing with possibilities. Each time, I learn tons of new skills, and those skills “open up” the map — areas that I previously didn’t know how to explore become new possibilities for future trips. -Jacob K.

It is so obvious how much expertise the Skurka team has and how much care they put into their work. Our route was expertly crafted and was just right in terms of difficulty. As a pretty new backpacker, this trip was a huge growth opportunity for me: I definitely challenged my perceived comfort zones and developed resilience and practical skills. Our guides were incredibly skilled, supportive, and responsive. When I sprained my ankle halfway through the trip, they didn’t even flinch at my overly emotional reaction—they just fetched me a ziploc of snow from a snow field, pitched my tent for me, calmly talked me off the metaphorical ledge, and helped carry my gear over the next two days once it was clear I was ok. Both felt like my backpacking spirit guides and alongside the equally awesome fellow clients on my trip, logging my “firsts” became a group activity. First dehydrated meal (beans and rice!). First multi-day trip. First alpenglow. First off trail travel. First snowfield crossing. First alpine lake swim. Loved this crew. ASA forever! -Jenn B.

I couldn’t be happier with my experience. I was energized by and learned a ton from the curriculum, both online and in the field. The world-class guides were awesome, and I really enjoyed traversing spectacular landscapes with a fun group of like-minded adventurers. Can’t wait to do it again! -Bob W.

I’ve trekked the world with a number of guides and companies, and Skurka Adventures is hands-down by far the best one. If you are serious about the journey and the adventure, there’s no better than Andrew Skurka. -Mark Q.

This was my 6th trip with Andrew Skurka Adventures and a very personal one. From the trip planning curriculum, and client matching, to actual boots on the ground, the entire journey is meticulously planned from start to finish. The guides are extremely knowledgeable and are truly experts in their craft. Not only that, they are down-to-earth human beings who are a pleasure to be around. I truly cannot express to Andrew and his amazing team the joy these trips bring me. Over the years I have made lifelong friends from these adventures with whom I continue to backpack. For as long as I’m able, I will continue to be a client on these trips. -Chip W.

Alaska was my third ASA trip and each one has been extraordinary. What makes this company unusual, in my experience, is the quality of the guides. All the guides I’ve traveled with have had the requisite backcountry expertise and athleticism to help their groups get to exciting wild places and then home again safely. But they’ve also had warmth, character and a genuine enthusiasm for the wilderness, all of which infused the trips with a deep meaning. -Rebecca K.

Andrew and his team create magic out of fascinating people and awe-inspiring places. If you want an on-the-rails experience, look elsewhere; but if the prospect of using your brain just as much as the rest of your body excites you, you’ve found your family. I’ll be back for a fourth adventure. -Ross P.

As a Triple Crowner looking for his next adventure and interested in learning navigation beyond FarOut, I could not have picked a better place and guide than Skurka Adventures and Gates of the Arctic. I learned a ton and it has given me the confidence to do more solo cross country travel in the future! -Evan

I cannot say enough good things about my experience. This trip gave me knowledge and confidence to do overnight trips on my own. The guides were incredibly knowledgeable, humble, patient, and generous. The client selection was a good balance of personalities and backgrounds and I enjoyed spending time with everyone. The level of physical effort was challenging without being overwhelming, but definitely helped me grow my comfort zone. The route was a great variety of surfaces and walking types both on and off trail. It was helpful as a first time backpacker to have access to the gear library before investing in my own equipment. I look forward to returning for future trips. -Armenoush A.

I flew 13 hours to join this group, and would fly twice as long to do it again. I can’t think of a better investment to guarantee an incredible trip in one of my bucket list backpacking destinations. Beyond the trip, I now feel confident in my ability to plan my own adventure in this glorious wilderness. -Mark C.

The Skurka trip enabled me to move from ordinary path follower backpacker to kick-arse, lightweight, navigationally confident backpacker. -Jean H.

This trip and the process leading up to it exceeded all my expectations. From the thoughtful and personalized trip selection help from Andrew and Katie, through the curriculum that had me arriving feeling ready to go, to the guide and group dynamics, this was an experience I’ll never forget. I felt challenged daily to be a leader in backcountry exploration, and to have empathy but also be outspoken to ensure group safety, comfort, and progress. We tackled environments and passes that I would’ve previously said ‘nobody could do’, and wondered at the beauty of Yosemite at every turn. The guides in this program are certified LEGENDS, and ours in particular was extremely sharing in their goals, journey, and what they appreciate about our natural world. I can’t wait to do another one when the opportunity arises. -Shane M.

ASA brings 4-5 things that in combination makes each trip unique and satisfying: 1. Fantastic locations for experiencing true wilderness and natural beauty 2. Exceptional guides with broad skills and great attitude to teach 3. Well-matched fellow hikers that enhance the experience 4. Classroom and Field curriculum to make you more confident and self-sufficient in wilderness 5. Push you just that bit harder, so you feel tired, but accomplished in the end. Great job ASA! -Suresh C.

If ASA and the team of guides isn’t THE standard in wilderness travel/instruction, I don’t know what or who is. A truly exceptional company with the highest level of meaningful content, dialed in organization at every turn, and elite instructors. And somehow it’s all wrapped into a personable, dynamic, flexible, serious, fun, and deeply authentic package. I’ve spent most of my life working with teams and the most elusive challenge has always been establishing and maintaining a strong culture –  “a shared way of doing something with passion.” There is a clear and strong culture with ASA that is immediately evident from the first interaction and only grows through the planning course and in the field. The general organization, information delivered, and instruction given is at the highest level – a seasoned backcountry traveler with thousands of miles WILL learn new things. However, I think the thing that really holds it all together and sets it clearly apart, is that it is an authentically shared experience with the clients and the guides. Yes, clients are paying, and guides are getting paid to be responsible for the clients, a business is being run – but it never feels that way. The guides genuinely wanted to be there for the clients but also for their own curiosity, desire to explore and learn, and passion for the outdoors and wild places. They had emotional skin in the game too and so it was a truly authentic and connected experience. That only happens in the rare, finest organizations and teams, it doesn’t happen by accident, it doesn’t grow without work, and it never sustains itself without exceptional people (guides) at its core. -David S.

Grand Staircase Escalante: Adventure

A trip with Andrew Skurka Adventures is like a college course in a good way. Lots of learning, reading, videos, and online work prior to the “final exam” in the field. You are involved with the process the whole way, so that by the time you’re on the trail, there are no surprises and you feel confident. They also take extra care and do a great job when forming backpacking groups, to try and pair people of similar abilities and interests together. This is a 5 star guiding company with outstanding employees. No wonder there are so many returning clients. -Sally B.

Absolutely phenomenal experience. A chance to travel into backcountry environments with guides who are masters of their craft. Great opportunity for learning and navigating new environments, and to enjoy yourself while doing so. -Joe K.

As someone entirely new to backpacking, I started this experience with more enthusiasm than outdoor skills, however, I somehow came home with even MORE enthusiasm…but (thankfully) also with the confidence, techniques, and essential knowledge necessary for future wilderness exploration of my own. The guides’ approach struck a perfect balance between hands-on assistance and fostering self-reliance. Despite my numerous mistakes, their patience and expertise ensured that every error became a valuable learning opportunity, without any hint of condescension. I mean, who knew you needed to close the valve on your inflatable sleeping pad in order for it to retain air, or that the shoes you’ve been wearing for the past 2 years had built-in lace garages to keep you from tripping over your own feet? As a woman, I can’t stress enough how empowering this experience was. Skurka’s dedication to inclusivity and adaptability ensures that each individual can thrive in their own unique way, regardless of background or experience level. Not to mention, the badass women on the Skurka team were extremely inspiring and helpful in teaching hygiene, trail safety, and gear-related adaptations that can be made for women in the backcountry. Andrew’s meticulous attention to group dynamics resulted in a diverse and supportive community, where we challenged and encouraged one another to exceed our limits both physically and mentally. This aspect of the program should not be overlooked. Having a like-minded and physically similar group MADE this experience so much more fulfilling. Lastly, the remote and breathtaking locations we explored felt like hidden treasures – offering a rare solitude and connection with nature that is difficult to find elsewhere. The opportunity to totally unplug and be this connected to nature was something that still brings tears to my eyes just thinking about it. It is evident that Andrew and his team have poured into this program and I hold so much gratitude in my heart for each Skurka team member. This trip transcended mere backpacking; it was a transformative journey that instilled in me a newfound confidence and reverence for the wilderness. I wholeheartedly recommend it to anyone – newbie or veteran- seeking to learn more about backpacking and outdoor exploration. -Kaylor M.

At 72 years old I wasn’t certain I could walk for multiple days with a backpack. After talking to Andrew I signed up for a 5 day adventure trip in Utah. The trip was the life changing experience I had hoped for. There were a few spots that were hard for me, but Mikaela and Jose got me through them. They even carry my pack on a few technical sections that I needed help on. I will be doing more trips in the future. -Brad C.

Escalante is a magical place.  It is a visually stunning landscape rich in cultural and geological history and is home to a marvelous array of plant and animal life. Mikaela and Andrew created the perfect conditions for an exceptional five-day experience, preparing us through an online curriculum, imparting their wisdom in the field, and assembling a group of individuals who worked harmoniously together. It’s not easy to make friends as an adult, but one of the remarkable aspects of these trips is how deep friendships can form in just a few days. I look forward to maintaining my new friendships and embarking on the next Skurka adventure. These are truly one-of-a-kind experiences. -Alan C.

Hiking with Andrew Skurka, specifically his guides Mikaela and Witt in the Escalante Grand Staircase Monument, were an outstanding experience from start to finish. Our group were perfectly cast, and the guides matched up really well, as did everyone to the fitness level/technical difficulty forecast. The guides felt like equals, and let the group try their hand at navigating, after a series of informative lectures in the field. They pushed us, but not too much. At times we felt challenged (great!), but everyone pulled through, and if anybody needed help/encouragement, the guides were there, radiating positivity. They took us on a great route, and to amazing campsites. The coming together at the designated kitchen in the field, to talk about the day that just passed, were one of many great things during our 7 days out there. I will be coming back for more. Thanks everyone! -Caspar N.

I am a huge fan of Skurka Adventure trips. The locations are places that I would not necessarily go alone and the other backpackers are some of the best people whom I have met. The learning aspect of the trips attracts people who are curious and want to improve their skills as opposed to just being out for a guided trip. I feel so much more confident as a backpacker after my Skurka trip. The focus on attention to detail before you head out is a great lesson in how to have a successful experience. Also the groups really have to work together to make navigation and other decisions. All of this leads to really nice cohesion among the group. The guides are beyond fantastic and are there to provide advice and safety but really let the clients make the decisions. Just a terrific and unique experience. –Denise E.

I couldn’t be happier with my experience. I was energized by and learned a ton from the curriculum, both online and in the field. The world-class guides were awesome, and I really enjoyed traversing spectacular landscapes with a fun group of like-minded adventurers. Can’t wait to do it again! -Bob W.

I had very little experience. But, I was given great instruction to follow that I took to heart. It provided what I needed to overcome a huge learning curve. All together, it made for one of the greatest weeks I’ve ever had. -David G.

I hiked and camped in spots that did not seem possible, but the group did so with the guidance and encouragement of the expert guides! -Susan K.

I loved the Utah trip!  Such a fascinating destination, and the grippy Navajo sandstone built my confidence while I worked to become more comfortable climbing or descending steep inclines.  I will have plenty of opportunities to practice my new skills over the coming backpacking season following this early season trip. Navigational skills are the main thing I’m looking forward to practicing in the coming months, as I always ran out of time to study navigation during the push to get to a trailhead.  Do I need a trailhead now? Time will tell. All the guides have impressive resumes. Their patience as we learned was much appreciated; they were excellent teachers. I made great new friends with the well-matched and well-prepared group. I applied for the trip in hopes of learning how to be a better leader for future backpacking adventures, and learned that being along for the ride also makes a great adventure. If I could repeat this exact trip, I’d do it again in a heartbeat. Many thanks to my group for a wonderful experience, and to Andrew for this excellent program. -Heidi E.

I was excited and nervous about my trip to Utah. It was a type of backpacking trip I have not been on before. It challenged me in so many ways and being able to step out of my comfort zone safely with my guides there to help. I learned a lot about cross country travel and navigating through unfamiliar terrain. I learned new tips about packing light from the guides and other trip members. Not only that, I learned a lot about myself and the peace that being immersed in the natural surroundings offers. Thank you for creating this experience and for all of the 3b team for sharing a piece of it with me. -Sarah G.

I was very impressed with the pre-trip curriculum and planning. It was obvious that Andrew Skurka Adventure Guided Trips were different from other backpacking tours. I felt more prepared and confident on arrival. I enjoyed how organic the trip was, with the guides adjusting the route due to weather and group ability. The group selection was perfect and everyone got along and were good company. Andrew Skurka has a wealth of knowledge and experience and that comes through with the co-guide and lessons during the trip. At the end of the trip I was more confident in my backpacking skills and knowledge. -Brian B.

I’ve gone three times to Utah with Andrew Skurka Adventures, and every time I’ve walked away with a memorable and deeply meaningful experience. Under the leadership of supportive and experienced and knowledgeable guides, each trip has been an adventure in a spectacular setting that I never could have or would have taken on myself. And on top of that, I’ve been able to directly translate the skills learned and capacities gained directly into my own trips. Many thanks to the guides! -Greg J.

I’ve trekked the world with a number of guides and companies, and Skurka Adventures is hands-down by far the best one. If you are serious about the journey and the adventure, there’s no better than Andrew Skurka. -Mark Q.

My trip experience was amazing. The beautiful views, rugged terrain and awesome camp locations were more than I could have ever imagined. I WILL BE BACK for more trips in the future! Thank you, Andrew Skurka and team, for making this all possible. –Danny T.

My trip with Andrew Skurka Adventures was outstanding, again proving the magic of this program. The group was very well matched in terms of skills, fitness, and personalities. I don’t know how they make that happen every time in my experience (third trip), but it really makes the program top-notch. The training provided and the awesome location pulls the whole package together. These trips are just amazing! -Shannon F.

My Utah Skurka trip was one amazing view after another, combined with dome ascents, canyon investigations, and webbing-aided down climbing. Katie and Witt provided excellent insights on how to navigate this unique geography and be comfortable in a slick rock desert with changing weather conditions.  Can’t wait for Utah 2025! -Jerry S.

The 5-day trips and curriculum are appropriate for a wide range of experience levels, including great refreshers for hikers with a lot of miles on their shoes. Our group had a range of complete novices to some doing their third and fourth ASA trips, but the group was well built and everyone had a great time. Andrew and Ella were a great yin and yang as guides and really made the trip excellent. -Jordan M.

The Utah trip far exceeded my expectations, if you want to up your game in backpacking, this is the program for you. -David K.

-Chip W.

This was my second guided trip and though I couldn’t believe it was possible, it was even better than the first. What really sets these trips apart is the knowledge and experience of the guides, and the thought that goes into planning the trip. Every guide I’ve worked with has been an excellent teacher, kind, and fun. The groups have been perfectly matched to ability and technical comfort while having a mix of ages and backgrounds. This is a trip that you come away from wanting more, and you’ve been given the tools to bring back to your own adventures. I can’t wait to sign up again! -Kelly C.

This was my second Skurka trip and I never thought it would have been able to top my first. Our guides, Mikaela and Witt, provided us with a fantastic experience. The terrain in Southern Utah feels like another planet. The Skurka trip agenda is such a great addition to the outdoors. The Planning curriculum sets everyone up for success for the trip and asks a very fair amount of work from the clients. The Field Curriculum gives everyone practice with skills that most ordinary folks, like myself, do not get the opportunity to practice often. The guides allow you to practice (and sometimes fail) in a comfortable environment. The best part of the Skurka trips is the people. The guides and the clients that Andrew puts together is, by far, my favorite part of the trip. Southern Utah is there for everyone to experience, but the guides, clients, and alumni are unique to these Skurka Trips. That is what makes these Skurka trips so special.  -Joe P.

This was my third Andrew Skurka trip. All three have been amazing experiences, with great guides, good instruction and incredible country to explore. Highly recommended. -Richard C.

Grand Staircase Escalante: Expedition

This was my third trip with ASA and my second one to Escalante. Andrew’s trips are incredibly well-organized, and his guides have a wealth of experience and knowledge to share. Although this was my third trip, I continued to learn new things about trip planning / navigation and gained a greater appreciation for the landscape. My group was well-matched in terms of fitness level and experience, and it was great getting to know everyone. All in all, I highly recommend it whether you are a first-time or returning client. -Alli

Grand Staircase Escalante: Canyoneering

After backpacking for decades, I applied to ASA to improve backcountry skills across the board. I was very interested in reducing pack weight by knowing what gear to not bring and what to replace. Eliminating freeze dried camp food was another strong motivator. When I found I could learn desert packing and canyoneering on top of the 9 week planning curriculum I was very excited to apply. Preparation was thorough and intense. The cadence started slow and picked up the month before the trip. The pre-trip training, gear shopping and skill sections were fun. They contributed to the smooth 7 day trip. Pairing the guides and client skills is an ASA specialty. Even though challenges were slightly different for everyone, no one in the group of 8 was too fast and bored or too slow and frustrated.  The guides adjusted the energy and distances traveled based on group discussions. This is not a glamping guide service. ASA guides are from the top of the outdoor tribe. They are great at passing along learned skills to all levels. I got the advanced degree in backpacking I was looking for, learned the beauty of the SW desert, and got to see more than most by running technical canyons. -Joe M.

An alumni returning to Utah for canyoneering is a testament to the skills, adventure, and learning that can’t be matched.  Andrew Skurka surrounds himself with exceptional guides in fantastic locations. -Ken M.

Andrew, you really put together an amazing trip. Every trip I have taken has been exceptional, but the technical canyoneering trip was above anything I could have imagined. You picked an amazing team, two exceptional guides and let us have fun in the wild canyons of Utah for seven days. I’m not sure if this trip can be topped. It will be forever in my mind as a bucket list of crazy (but in a good way) things I have done in my life. -Alyssa J.

As advertised. The experience makes you a better prepared wilderness venturer. Technically proficient, and know how to bring out the emotional impact of the land. -Pat

Canyoneering with Jeff Wohl is an exceptional experience, all of the stars! It was challenging at times, but he showed me that I am more capable than I give myself credit for. I feel that I have some basic anchoring skills, and could go out to some beginner/intermediate canyons with others at this point, which is exactly what I was looking for out of this trip. -Jen S.

We spent time learning the basics of rappelling and rope work, and the next day we started.  We traveled down canyon on the first day, the second day we restaged for the third day.  We went down a long slot, and back up another slot.  It was challenging, but good. -Al R.

I enjoy, more than anything, the thoughtfulness of Andrew and his guides. You feel cared for and appreciated. Whether it was gear planning, route planning, food prep- I felt it was all done very well. I am grateful for the experience. This is not the typical guided experience. Often guides are stuck in the same area, doing the same route over and over- and has a mechanical feel to it. That was not the case with this adventure. -Jeff Z.

-Erika L.

I really need to reiterate how much I enjoyed working with Jose and Sarah. They make a great team, really complimentary in their skill sets and personality. They read the room very well, making adjustments to the itinerary and daily plans to keep us fresh and engaged. I’m grateful for that. Could we have gone harder and walked out of the desert completely wrung out, feeling like I left every single thing out there? Yes. But then I’m not sure all the learning would have sunk in as well as it did. The pacing left some room for recovery and retention, and I’m super grateful for that. The desert is gorgeous, and it offers so much opportunity for reflection, adventure, perspective, joy. So glad I was able to join this trip. -Lauren M.

I was way outside my comfort zone doing my first canyoneering trip and had total trust in Jeff and Sarah.  I would love to do another trip with either/ both of them. -Mat B.

It is exceptionally rare to be simultaneously fulfilled in all primary dimensions of one’s being. On our seven-day Utah canyoneering trip, I felt just that. The incredible beauty and complexity of the environment merely accented what I learned and experienced through truly world-class guiding and education, the best team of fellow clients, and an extensive and varied suite of technical physical and mental challenges superbly tuned for our growing abilities – the combination of which created within myself an astounding sense of capability, contentment, gratitude, and awe. Through our trip I gained new proficiencies that open the door to new adventures, a wealth of memories of light and canyon and sky, and nine new amazing friendships that feel as if they’ve only just begun. -Danielle G.

Jeff and Audrey led a fantastically successful 7-day technical canyoneering trip near Escalante, Utah.  Our group members ranged from people with some existing canyoneering experience to those with practically no canyoneering/climbing experience or even much time on rope at all.  Everyone felt comfortable, learned a lot about canyoneering, we had a great expedition, and a great time.  I would rate this trip 6 stars out of 5: it was that good! -James J.

My 4th trip with ASA – always exceeds expectations – had a complete and classic canyoneering experience – memories per mile is incredible. -Brian B.

My first canyoneering trip and it was definitely a combination of type 1 and type 2 fun.  Challenging days in beautiful country.  Highly skilled guides that took us on unexplored routes where outcomes weren’t guaranteed; where we were all solving problems and accomplishing goals instead of following a canned route. Highly recommended if you are comfortable with cold water, tight spaces and dangling from ropes (safely, of course). Highly recommended for someone that wants to test out the waters. -Jeff L.

My second trip with Skurka Adventures was phenomenal and raised the high bar that had been set on my first trip.  Our guides, Jeff and Sarah, were incredibly knowledgeable about southern Utah’s geography, cultural history, and exhibited superior proficiency in the technical skills that are required for canyoneering.  They helped our group form a cohesive bond in the five days we had together and were inspirational leaders every step of the way.  10/10 would recommend. -Hunter H.

Jeff Wohl made this trip live up to expectations. -Anonymous

Sarah and Jose made an excellent co-guide team. Their passion for the outdoors, landscapes, and teaching were second to none. They knew each other’s strengths and weaknesses and played off of them, while making the entire group smile and laugh. -James

The expedition canyoneering trip from Andrew Skurka was amazing. It had a great mix of adventure, technical components, and education. The trip was full of new experiences and was truly unique. -Ryan

The meals were great but I really could’ve used bigger portions!  I was the only Skurka trip newbie on my trip, so although others knew they’d have to supplement breakfast and dinners, I didn’t know that. if you can offer a canyoneering 201 trip next year i’d love to take it. – Hunter F.

This canyoneering trip provided me the confidence and competence to explore canyons in the southwest at will.  It was an amazing bucket list trip that provided the skills needed and inspired the desire to explore more of the American southwest. Our variable itinerary, guides, and group were all superb. Thanks Skurka Adventures! -Bill

-Jacob K.

This program offers the level of adventure I seek in my own personal, wild trips. I’ve always come away having learned something powerfully useful, whether actively from the guide team and curriculum or passively through the kindred, adventurous souls of fellow participants. -Eric V.

This was my first Skurka trip and it exceeded all expectations. It was an incredible opportunity to not only enjoy the trip of a lifetime but also learn from the best. -Dave H.

Magical and moody valley in the Brooks Range, with near perfectly vertical orientation of the sedimentary layers.

Alaska: Expedition

Alaska was a bucket list vacation for me, which meant I had high expectations. Gates of the Arctic with the Skurka team exceeded those expectations. A truly epic adventure that I will not forget. -Joshua H.

-Rebecca K.

An experience-of-a-lifetime seven-day backpacking trip in the spectacular and remote Gates of the Arctic NP in Alaska with Andrew Skurka company’s world-class guides Scott Christy and Richard Forbes. Fifty-six miles of tussocks, rocks, snow, mud, rivers, and mountain passes. Traveling on beautiful aufeis is my new favorite! Tussocks are volleyball-sized moving mounds camouflaged with grass – every step took effort, especially with the water and mud in between, guessing which way the mound would move and then going with the flow making this trek rugged and fun. We learned new techniques to travel safely through snow and rivers, working as a team. Lots of practice in route finding. Abundant wildflowers. -Phyllis C.

An incredible experience in remote Alaska that would not have been possible without the guiding hand of the Skurka team. The preparation and participatory nature truly made it an expedition of a lifetime. -Brian C.

-Evan

Fantastic trip to Alaska’s Brooks Range, truly the land before time! The beauty and remoteness of the region was only exceeded by the expertise, teaching and discussions with our guides Scott Christy and Richard Forbes. Will always remember this trip! -Bill M.

For anyone considering Skurka’s outfit for a Brooks Range trip (or anywhere for that matter) – do it. ASA provided me with a trip that left me blown away. Even as someone having done trips throughout the US incl. Alaska, ASA’s Preparation and Field Curriculum still schooled me on skillsets like gear, ability to read and navigate off-trail terrain in the field (and on a map). This education comes from world class guides in the hiking and backpacking space. In the field our guides navigated complex and extremely dynamic situations on a daily basis with ease and a smile on their face. But the best part of all was the group of passionate folks I hiked (better yet thrived!) with on this trip who truly enhanced a great trip into a truly incredible and memorable time of my life. Thank you to Andrew and his awesome team! -Tyler J.

Great trip, the Brooks Range is unbeatable, and Andrew and Brandon are exceptional guides! -Allan R.

I achieved one of my life-list goals of backpacking in Gates of the Arctic and had an amazing time! I am very glad I was able to join Andrew Skurka Adventures guided trip and now have added skills & confidence that I could solo or lead a trip with family/friends to Gates of the Arctic. It was a special treat to have Andrew himself leading our group!! Highly recommend Andrew Skurka Adventures! -Eric K.

I have only positive things to say about my trips. -Eric W.

I have planned trips that took a bad turn due to poor gear choice or misrepresented fitness from members of the group. The great part about trips with Andrew and his team is you know people will have their gear sorted, be fairly close in fitness, and have similar skills and goals. Really fun to be exposed to both the experience of the guides and the other clients – great people to learn from. -Dave

I won the guide lottery! Scott and Richard are truly experts in their field and it was an absolute joy to have them as my guides. -Mark F.

My Skurka Adventures trip to the Brooks Range in Alaska was my first ever guided backpacking trip. I’m an experienced backpacker, but I wasn’t prepared to hike the Brooks Range on my own. This trip ended up far exceeding all of my expectations. From the pre-trip communication, classrooms, and prep to the exceptional trip guides to the wonderful fellow hikers I met, every aspect of this trip was exceptional. And that is not even mentioning the amazing setting that we hiked to. -Gene C.

My Skurka Alaska expedition has been the capstone of my backpacking experience and one of the highlights of my entire life. Not that I don’t have other backpacking goals, but this tested every aspect of my backcountry knowledge, gear, and fitness. The payoff was the hard personal challenge I hoped for through some of the largest and most beautiful wilderness left on the planet. Unfortunately words and pictures can’t do this adventure justice. When you are ready, you have to go, do, and see this place for yourself. -Bill F.

Our Alaska 7-day Adventure was an unforgettable trip. The scenery was amazing, and the knowledge gained would allow me to be comfortable planning my own trip (someday). -Scott S.

This was a simply phenomenal experience and I am eternally grateful to everyone at ASA for the invitation to hike with you. -Miranda W.

SA trips have challenged me physically and mentally and have made me a better, more confident backpacker. I am forever grateful for the skills learned and friends made because of you all. -Naomi M.

Skurka Adventures runs the best backpacking service you can find. The attention to detail is remarkable. From grouping clients to have the optimal combination of people to enjoy a trip with in the field to securing permits/handling travel logistics in places that would overwhelm backpackers trying to do it on their own. From the application process to the final goodbye at the end of the trip, their service shines. The guides are world class and the groups are configured in a way to maximize everyone’s quality of trip. The world class backpacking destinations are an added bonus as well! The Brooks Range is a hard place to get to, much less go on a week long backpacking trip in but it is absolutely worth it. Andrew reminded us frequently during our hikes that “there are no easy miles in Alaska”.  My feet got wet and stayed wet the entire trip (as advertised on the website). The terrain was challenging with tussocks especially being tough to hike on. There is not a single mile of man-made trail. But it was an amazing trip! I felt so grateful to be on this trip with such an amazing group of men. Especially on our longest day together. The feeling of accomplishment after the trip had ended, knowing that we had just completed a world class backpacking trip that very few people will have the opportunity to do will stay with me the rest of my life. This was the best backpacking experience I’ve had so far! After the trip I feel like I “leveled” up in one week with Skurka Adventures as a backpacker what would take years learning by myself or with other guided companies. -Chad M.

The 7 day Alaska trip was the perfect blend of skill, challenge, adventure, and experience. Andrew and Brandon were an amazing guide duo and I could not have been happier with the decision to apply for the trip. 5/5 would highly recommend it. Conor P.

This package of planning and hiking is a bargain and hiker’s dream. The process of learning about planning a backcountry hike then gearing up for its specifics brought me to a more versatile gear set, a chance for trying new options via the gear lending library, and an incredible adventure in the Alaska Brooks Range. I feel comfortable practicing with map and compass to learn more about navigation and reading terrain so I can eventually plan backcountry hiking for myself.  I am on my way to learning to hike in the west!  The balance of the guides being in familiar and new locations provided for their joining us in the wonder of the wilderness and how to consider its conditions to hike successfully, as well as giving the group options about how the hike might weave through the valleys and passes. -Joanne F.

This was my 2nd trip with ASA. I’ve been extremely happy with the overall experience, including the thoroughness of the planning process, the process for maximizing the compatibility of client groups, as well as the knowledge, professionalism, and demeanor of the guides. -Brian B.

This was my 3rd trip with Skurka. All of them have been fantastic. I learned so much in regard to off trail backpacking and feel completely comfortable now in planning and executing my own trips. Additionally, I met so many wonderful people and developed new friendships. I am usually a DIY guy on all my travels and do not like anything pre-arranged for me. Though Skurka feels different and I am looking forward to more adventures with them. -Gerry F.

This was my 4th ASA trip and my second to Alaska. While I learned critical skills from my first three adventures allowing me to confidently do non guided trips to Talkeetna Range, Denali NP, and a Sawtooth Hi Route, I was still able to improve my skill set and share experiences with others who share my interest in the outdoors. -Jonathan K.

Unlike anything. A fantastic experience from start to finish. -Ben J.

A carpet of blooming yarrow in the High Sierra

High Sierra: Fundamentals

Amazing opportunity to backpack with other like-minded people and extraordinary guides. Prolific wildflowers, granite landscape and alpine lakes were breathtaking. Highly recommended trip to learn fundamentals! -Nicole L.

As a first time backpacker, the fundamentals trip in the Emigrant Wilderness was an incredible experience for me. The quality of guides was unbelievable. They were not only off the charts in terms of their knowledge and experience but also just amazing, kind, caring people that I am so fortunate to have met. It was a lot of work to prepare for this trip (meeting the serious fitness requirements, researching and acquiring the relevant gear, completing the required coursework), but it was so worth it. We saw an amazing area with an amazing group of people, and it truly felt like an adventure. I don’t think you can get this experience anywhere else. -JB D.

If you are a backpacking novice, the Fundamentals curriculum and hike is a great way to have a positive first experience, with a light load, supportive and knowledgeable guides, and a lot of fun. A fabulous trip! Christina O.

Joining this trip was one of the best decisions I’ve ever made. It was worth the cost and then some. Not only did I learn many new skills to use in the backcountry, but I’ve increased my confidence while backpacking and navigating, and I now feel prepared to do this on my own and to teach others. This is so much different than your average guided trip in that you are given the tools and then must use them yourself to learn from first-hand experience. The guides are truly gems. Not only are they humble, wise, generally good people that truly care about sharing their love for the wilderness with you — but the knowledge that they share would take you years to learn on your own. The other group members were an absolute joy to spend the weekend with, we came as strangers and left as friends. My experience in the High Sierra last weekend lit a fire inside of me and I must go back as soon as possible! I would definitely sign up for another trip with Andrew Skurka and would recommend this to anyone who wants to learn from the experts. -Martina A.

My 3-day, 2-night guided backpacking trip in the Emigrant Wilderness Area of Stanislaus National Forest exceeded all my expectations. Guides Dahn Pratt and Sarah Stratton were exceptional and a pleasure to experience the outdoors with. Their knowledge of the area, combined with their attention to detail, ensured that our group was well-prepared and well-informed. The Emigrant Wilderness was beautiful, including alpine lakes and rugged mountains. Each day brought new adventures and challenges, all of which were made manageable and enjoyable with the guidance and expertise of our guides. Their ability to tailor the experience to our skill levels and interests was impressive and made the trip both accessible and rewarding for everyone involved. One of the highlights was the camaraderie that developed within our group. The guides fostered a supportive and friendly atmosphere, encouraging us to connect with one another and with nature in meaningful ways. The knowledge and skills I gained during this trip will undoubtedly enhance my future outdoor adventures.

I highly recommend a guided backpacking trips with Andrew’s guide company. As a novice backpacker looking to explore the wilderness for the first time, this experience was challenging, educational, and inspiring. I will definitely be back. Thank you much! -Eli S.

Our guides, Melodie and Christy, did a very good job of teaching us and fielding our many novice questions, all while guiding us through a beautiful landscape. I’m very glad to have been on this trip. -John B.

The entire experience, from the preparation course to the actual hike, was meticulously planned. The trip pushed me to train hard and significantly improved my fitness. The breathtaking scenery and camaraderie with fellow hikers made the challenging hike incredibly rewarding. This trip was, without a doubt, the best introduction to backpacking I could ask for. -Anonymous

This is my second trip with Skurka Guides and they continue to bring a high level of knowledge and experience. The guides are positive teachers and motivators, taking different individuals who have just met and getting them to work together to navigate off trail. We transferred a 2D world onto the 3D world. It was exciting. But even more than all the skills that we learned in the wilderness, are the pre trip planning skills we learned before. Organizing our gear for this trip and future trips, prepping meals that are light, economic, and delicious. Skurka trips are not just “follow the leader” from point A to point B. They are an educational experience, a classroom in the woods. -Mechelle E.

Working our way through an off-trail valley towards a pass and another off-trail valley in Inyo National Forest

High Sierra: Adventure

After having been on a few group backpacking trips, this trip with Skurka is hands down the best. I felt supported at all times. The group of participants were evenly matched. The eight participants were all ladies over a certain age. Owning my shortcomings, I was one of the slowest and I needed extra help on many levels. Before the trip I thought there were two, repeat trekkers. There turned out to be three repeat trekkers with Skurka out of eight. I noted this to be an impressive showing. At our after trip lunch one lady suggested the group join another trip in West Virginia this year and a  canyoneering trip next year in Utah. This push was coming from one of the repeat trekkers. The leaders were inspiring and great with motivating participants as needed. Joe  McConaughy is a considerate leader. He is willing to go the extra mile to help. I wonder where his unbound energy comes from. Hazel Platt, the co-leader, is a wealth of knowledge regarding plants & trees and a strong advocate for going off-trail. I am proud of myself for waking up three out of the four mornings and having my bag packed before breakfast. This was a first for me. Normally I am not packed and ready to hit the trial until after breakfast. Something shifted and I am pleased that I created a new pattern. In hind-sight, I am grateful that three of the campsites were off-trail. We had to work for magnificent places to camp for the night. I look forward to joining another trip with Skurka in the future. Thanks for an awe-inspiring experience and memories. -Ramona J.

Amazing trip to the California wilderness with Sarah and Hazel  Looking forward to many more trips with Andrew and his team in the future! Get outside! -Jody T.

An amazing adventure that went beyond all of my expectations. Everything was well organized and there are tons of valuable resources to continue exploring the High Sierra. Highlights were the foraged onions for dinner, the views from alpine lakes, and sleeping below stunning peaks. I fully recommend this experience for anyone looking to move out of their comfort zone while backpacking. -Nathan P.

Andrew Skurka Adventures definitely lived up to its reputation. The location of our Sierra trip was fabulous, the guides were fantastic, the route was fun, interesting and challenging enough and also flexible to cater to shorter or longer days. Our group had great chemistry, thanks to the pre-selection of Andrew and Katie and to the guides Katie and Nicco. The trip basically got better every day and at the end it felt strange to get back to civilization. I was able to learn a lot in a relatively short time and enjoyed myself thoroughly. -Domingo P.

Approaching the High Sierra on foot with legendary guides and amazing fellow backpackers was better than I ever could have imagined. The scent of lupines, the chill of clear streams, the soft alpine meadows, the vast expanses of granite and talus are all a part of me now. Trusting the knowledge and skills of Andrew Skurka’s organization gave me the courage to climb higher and endure more! -Sarah L.

Backpacking for 7 days with Skurka Adventures in the Sierra Nevada mountains was an unforgettable experience.  I continue to be a repeat client because of its excellent trip location offerings, its guides’ genuine care and expertise, its focus on developing client skills, and the unique and talented client base that it attracts. Highly recommend it. -Hunter H.

Backpacking with some of the loveliest people you can meet in some of the most beautiful scenery in the US. I learned so much about how to plan and execute a significant backpacking trip. The pre-trip instruction is fantastic, and the quality of the guides were beyond outstanding. Andrew and his team did a wonderful job of vetting and organizing the groups. I was lucky enough to meet some truly great people on my seven day trip. I can’t recommend this experience enough. -Ben H.

Been hiking & backpacking for four years including the JMT & TRT; this experience of off-trail/backcountry exploration was the way to open up an entirely new level! I can’t think of anything this time around. Keep up the wonderful work. -Kim R.

Coming into the trip I had a few concerns: would the guides be cool, would it be too challenging or not challenging enough, will I get along with the others on the trip, will I learn enough to become confident in off-trail travel. This trip far exceeded my expectations and delivered on everything I was looking to get out of it. The guides were excellent and their experience is world class. I met people that I look forward to going on future trips with. I now have the confidence for off trail travel. I’d highly recommend this trip to others that are looking to challenge themselves. -Richard S.

Expand your horizons and open doors to the great outdoors. Learn proper planning techniques to maximize your type I fun while experiencing type II challenges with like-minded and supportive classmates. A very worthwhile trip! -Jeff H.

I am really glad I took this trip!  Both the classroom and field work increased my confidence to safely and independently plan for a navigate a backcountry trip.  There were many Ah ha! moments that I wished I had learned 30 years ago! -KDM D.

I can’t say enough good things about my trip (5 days, SEKI).  Eight strangers quickly became friends over our shared love of Skurka-style backpacking. The guides were the best (Katie and Nicco), and took us places we would never venture on our own. Incredible, remote locations. And we learned skills, shared stories and even ate wild mushrooms (thanks Nicco). I’ll remember it forever (and I’ll be back). -Jon W.

I didn’t think I needed a course, just signed up because a friend was doing it. But I learned a ton and had a blast. I’ll be back for sure. -David D.

I embarked on an ASA trip aiming to gain confidence in my backpacking skills, learn more about exploring off-trail routes, and hopefully meet a few cool people. On my 5-day adventure trip in the Sierras, I achieved all of that and more — the guides were incredibly knowledgeable and built teaching moments spontaneously in the field (snow field crossings, pole usage, talus techniques, setting bearings); we were given the opportunity to work together and navigate ourselves off-trail with minimal spoon feeding (when we picked the wrong route, we learned the hard way through sometimes grueling climbs); the overall route showcased the southern sierras in a spectacular way; and I can confidently say I now feel comfortable planning and executing a similar solo trip for myself. -Vani

-Mark C.

I had a fantastic time in the High Sierras with two outstanding guides, Sarah and Hazel!  We climbed ridges I wouldn’t have guessed, and surprised myself with the accomplishments! The icing on the cake was arriving at pristine, high alpine lakes at nearly every lunch spot and camping destination. So many spectacular sunrises and sunsets in this terrain, what a gift! It was amazing to me to arrive at these off grid destinations and actually be the only people there.  This trip was challenging at times, serene at times, and fun traveling with a group – a perfect combination! -Pattee S.

I have become so much more confident and capable in all aspects of backpacking through my Skurka trips. I know how to plan my meals, my equipment and skills with them are polished, I pick good campsites, know how to care for my health, safety and comfort, and have become much more confident with map/apps/compass for navigating. The planning curriculum is spot on and the field curriculum is great. And the Guides are incredible—they each bring unique knowledge and experience while always reinforcing the Skurka ‘systems’ that frame all the learning. In all four of my Skurka trips the routes were fantastic and the other clients a pleasure and fun to spend a week with—-this will be the reason I sign up for new trips in the future. -David E.

I have now done two trips with Skurka Adventures with the intent of learning then improving my backpacking skills. I feel this has propelled me to learn the skills to enjoy backpacking to the fullest and avoiding many hurdles and growing pains that could take away from the full enjoyment of the experience. Thanks to everyone involved from the planning, prepping and executing of these trips.  These experiences have been invaluable as I strive to gain full confidence in preparing for these trips and excelling at executing them for myself, friends and family. -Seth O.

I learned and practiced skills in a spectacular setting with immensely knowledgeable and experienced guides, who also happened to be lovely, kind, and supportive. I loved everything about it. -Grace C.

I participated in a 5 day trip in the High Sierras and the trip was beyond my expectations. All the group members were very well matched in fitness level, which allowed us to travel efficiently and have fun while doing it. We traveled through amazing land full of beautiful lakes, wildflowers and high passes and spent a lot of time away from the highly trafficked trails. Every day was full of learning skills such as navigation with map and compass or caltopo, choosing good sites for camping, etc. I had a lot of fun meeting other members of my group and my guides. The trip was challenging but at the same time full of beautiful moments that I will be coming back to in my memories. -Anna J.

I really loved my trip. I learned a ton and the scenery was beautiful. Could not have picked a better trip for my first time backpacking. My co-guide Christy was amazing! -Ronald H.

I’ve now been on three Skurka trips in the Sierra. On each trip, I’ve learned extensively, have been led by terrific guides, and have worked alongside great participants. This points to Andrew and his team’s ability to develop an exceptional curriculum, recruit and retain an impressive team, and draw in genuinely good people as participants. I’d highly recommend that anyone interested in backpacking off-trail look into a Skurka trip. I’ve come away more informed and better prepared to tackle both on and off-trail adventures after each iteration. Truly thankful! -Chris F.

If you are a backpacker who feels they would like to up their game with their backpacking skills then strongly consider signing up for a Andrew Skurka backpacking trip.  It’s much more than a backpacking trip. The guides do a very thorough job of knowledge sharing and training. The in the field navigation training is worth the cost of the trip alone. I’ve taken a trip with another company and the costs were very similar. That’s where the similarities end as the Skurka trip was also a learning experience unlike anything I’ve experienced. I was able to expand my backpacking knowledge in a short period of time and I now feel much more confident being able to plan and execute more difficult trips in the future. -Gene C.

If you are interested in seeing amazing backcountry places with experienced knowledgeable guides who really care about your experience and the success of the entire group- look no further! This is the backpacking group for you! -Christine P.

If your goal is self-proficiency, you’ll discover Skurka trips and their front end preparation have no peer. Give a man a fish, feed him for a day; teach him to fish, feed him for a lifetime. -John G.

Incredible guides with a modern, practical take on backpacking skills and gear. You learn by leading. No unnecessarily heavy packs or lessons from the 70’s here. Locations that can’t be beat and prices that beat the competition. 5 stars, would do again. -Steve

-Jenn B.

Katie and Nicco provided a well-rounded backcountry experience – we were able to witness their different styles while also seeing the non-negotiables  – preparation, awareness, big-heartedness and connection. Both were very invested in the group’s needs and concerns and did a great job of acknowledging and attending to each participant’s strengths and challenges. They celebrated our wins and brought an ease to the struggles that kept us moving forward. Bravo. -Lisa C.

Majestic, peaceful, and other worldly would describe my amazing trip into the high Sierras. This trip challenged me mentally and physically in a grand way. Nicco and Katie gave us room to grow and challenge ourselves with a perfect amount of support via kind words, great stories, and important learning sessions. Despite being wonderfully exhausted at the end, I was looking to book my next trip two days after returning home. I miss my group already! -Wendy B.

My wife and I did a 5 day trip in the High Sierras with Andrew Skurka Adventures which really helped us build confidence and a foundation of skills for future solo off-trail backpacking trips. Our trip leaders were amazing and we got to backpack with an awesome group of strangers in one of the most beautiful parts of California! -Robin Y.

Not your typical backpacking trip where you are led around by a guide.  You will be expected to learn and improve upon your existing backpacking skills as the guides double as instructors.  This can be both a good and a bad thing, but you will walk away a more knowledgeable backpacker.  In my case I was able to learn modern off trail navigation skills that would benefit me on future trips. -Owen W.

Once again, Skurka Adventures hits the jackpot. After my first trip in Utah, I thought I had learned it all. But my recent Skurka trip in the High Sierras showed me I had only scratched the surface. The guides’ insights on off-trail backpacking were mind-blowing. I highly recommend these trips to anyone eager to explore the road less traveled. -Brent G.

Our guides were absolute pros, experienced with 1000’s of miles of backpacking on and off trail. They always kept us safe, but pushed us to take the lead of the group to demonstrate a new skill we learned. They paced the instruction over the course of the days, so as not to drown us in too much information, which would have been easier to do. Even though I have previously done a month-long Appalachian trail hike, I learned so much about gear, packing one’s pack, food selection and preparation, navigation using maps, dead-reckoning, and navigation apps. On top of that, it happened in a stunning wilderness that few ever get a chance to see. Truly a lifetime top adventure for me. We wenr out as a group of people with a love of the outdoors and adventure, and ended up a group of new-found friends. -John M.

Seven days in Yosemite was my second trip with ASA.  I went to learn. I returned with a treasure. -Larry M.

Skurka Adventures did it again! On my third trip I was again impressed with expert guides; a well-matched, compatible group of fellow backpackers; and a wonderful off-trail learning experience that will enhance my personal backpacking journeys. -Rod L.

Skurka adventures is your backpacking Yoda! They distill decades of backpacking experience into an accessible and enjoyable experience for anyone with the ambition to give it a try. -Michael P.

Taking a Skurka Adventure is an opportunity to explore new ideas regarding the wilderness and backpacking.  The stellar personalities & experienced Guides & co-trail “buddies” helped to unleash fresh senses of exploration and unrealized dreams. This hiking trip made me more aware and appreciative of different backpacking styles and attitudes to backpacking after many trips on my own. –Regina M.

The amount of teaching/learning on the trip was better than I expected. It wasn’t just the experienced guides and trip itself, but also the entire preparation curriculum. In addition, you end up in a group carefully tailored to your level, so you get to learn from people as well. Such a fun and educational experience! Definitely not an average “guided trip.” -Murat B.

The backpacking lessons learned on Skurka trips are unparalleled. One trip is not enough. -Jack R.

The California trip was a great adventure and I learned a lot about navigating and planning a route. The guides were super and I learned so much and had an amazing time. -Alex W.

The group was well matched, the route was the perfect kind of challenging… just an unbelievable trip in a magical setting. -Bjorn B.

The planning curriculum is excellent, very helpful. Brian, despite his fame, is very friendly and cool.  Loved his star show! Jose is an excellent teacher, full of knowledge and fun stories. -Ying C.

The route and terrain took me out of my comfort zone. But with the excellent, knowledgeable support from our guide, I was able to complete the challenging route, (including bagging my first peak!) and feel a wonderful sense of accomplishment. -Elliot C.

The Skurka trip enabled me to move from ordinary path follower backpacker to kick-arse, lightweight, navigationally confident backpacker. -Jean H.

The trip was great. Amazing wilderness, challenging terrain, excellent teaching and a wonderful group. -Maria R.

These trips are a perfect way to dial in what is essential for meaningful backpacking: the skills to navigate cross country travel with the right attitude and equipment to do so. -Dave

-Shane M.

This trip exceeded my expectations. I had no idea the guides would be so exceptional and steeped in the world of backpacking. Also, I couldn’t imagine a better group to enjoy the backcountry with. -Faith A.

This trip was everything I hoped it would be. The guides and other backpackers were great. The scenery and weather was incredible. And there was a good balance of challenges, learning and enjoyment. -Chris F.

This was an incredible trip! The level of challenge, the views, the group, and the knowledge I gained met and exceeded all of my expectations. I never would have explored the Sierras on my own, and the guides made this seem super accessible. I am looking forward to the next trip with this group! -Luke

This was my first guided trip of any kind, and I did not know what to expect.   A lot of time was spent before the trip in education, checking gear, and nailing down details.   I know from experience how important this is, and was glad to see how thorough the prep was.  The trip was great in all aspects, from meeting at the trailhead to the hugs and farewells at the end.  In between were amazing scenery and wonderful companions and guides.  The hikes were appropriate and as described in distance and difficulty.  I feel that I now have a good grasp on navigating with map and compass and the use of CalTopo, and plan to continue to practice those skills.   Both of our guides, Melodie and Brian, were experts who were willing to share their stories, skill, and experience.  They also were good motivators – I would not have made it up Mt. Coness without the encouragement of both of them.   Overall, I would not hesitate to recommend ASA to anyone interested in such an experience. -Kristine H.

This was my second consecutive year taking a Skurka trip. It’s a testament to the program and quality of all the guides that I wanted to come back. The guides were incredibly experienced and knowledgeable. The chance to spend a week learning from them in the field is about the best backpacking experience you can get. It’s a pretty special experience to spend a multiple day stretch in a National Park without seeing another person/group, but those are the types of remote areas we were able to get to! Would highly recommend a trip with ASA! -Will L.

This was my second trip with Andrew Skurka Adventures and they continue to exceed expectations.  From Andrew’s planning and preparation program, the incredibly beautiful locations, the challenging routes, and his highly experienced and passionate guides, nobody does it better. -Michael D.

This was my third Skurka adventure, and at seven days, the longest. (Also West Virginia and Escalante.) Several others in our group also were repeat clients. We had a wonderful trip in the Emigrant Wilderness, with Sarah Stratton and Hazel Platt as our excellent guides. We spent most of the time off trail, and with our guides’ assistance, really honed our map reading and orienteering skills. For most of the trip we did not see any other hikers/backpackers. The weather was better than we could have hoped for August, with little mosquito pressure. We passed by at least 18 lakes and swam in at least six of them. The guides were paying attention without being too involved, and I felt like I could “hike my own hike.” We also spent a significant amount of time each day in some sort of instruction, from LNT principles to map-reading, site selections, etc. Also, the clients who tend to come on these trips tend to be resilient and interested in actively engaging with their environment and increasing their backcountry skills. In the case of my group, they were wonderful to walk with for a week. 100% recommend. -Doug R.

This was the most physically demanding yet satisfying experience of my entire life. My physical, emotional, and spiritual limits were tested on a daily basis. I thought I was signing up for a backpacking trip, but what I got in return exceeded all of my expectations. This trip was life changing. As someone who had very little backpacking experience, I was looking to gain the proper skillset while exploring the Yosemite back country. I was not expecting to climb up and over multiple mountain passes in a single day, waking up at 4:30AM and hiking until 5PM and pushing myself to limits I’ve never imagined. IT WAS WORTH EVERY STEP. I am still trying to process this trip. I learned that I am capable of so much more than I could have ever thought. I have a fire inside that did not exist prior to taking this trip. I want to explore more and I am now even more confident in my abilities as a backpacker and a human. Prior to taking this trip, Andrew reached out to me to learn more about my physical abilities to determine if I would be appropriate for a 7 Day trip in the backcountry. Ultimately he decided that I was good to go and allowed me to participate in the 7 day group. Looking back, I understand why he wanted to be sure and I appreciate that immensely. If you are considering your next adventure, I would HIGHLY recommend Skurka and his team. They all have a wealth of knowledge and you will certainly walk away satisfied in more ways than one. 10/10. Already looking forward to my next trip! If you’re on the fence, DO IT. -Matthew D.

This whole program is run with a lot of integrity. Everyone involved really cares about imparting their knowledge and giving others the skills and confidence to get out there and do it (more). At the very beginning of my hiking career (20+ years ago) I followed the story of this guy called Flyin’ Brian who was doing the calendar triple crown; it was an amazing privilege to have him as a guide. He and Melodie are two of the most skilled, caring guides imaginable; both of them were enormously patient even though most of us are many levels below their skills and accomplishments. Spending five days hiking with strangers  worked out much better than I expected, and we were matched well. I enjoyed hiking with every single other person in the group, I learned something from every single person in the group. -Cormac H.
What a joy to experience the Sierra with a guide who has spent 30 years hiking them. Great guide, great group, great route. Provided a very tailored learning experience that met us where we were and pushed us the right amount to make us grow. It’s less of a vacation and more of an all-in, intensive, learning experience. If you’re willing to commit and push yourself it really levels you up. -Dave

Guide teams for the 11-day High Sierra trips, left to right: Dahn Pratt (Triple Crowner), Joe McConaughy “Stringbean” (FKT’s on AT, PCT, LT, AZT, JMT), Witt Wisebram (Triple Crowner, FKT on AZT, AT ridgerunner), and Mikaela Osler (Triple Crowner, FKT’s on LT and CT)

High Sierra: Expedition

This trip exceeded all of my expectations. Everything was fantastic — the pre-planning curriculum, the challenging route, endless opportunities to build confidence with off-trail navigation, and being surrounded by inspiring, fun, hardworking teammates. I met people I hope to stay in touch and plan trips with for years to come. The part of the trip that stood out more than anything else, though, was the quality of our guide team. Andrew has assembled a world-class team of guides who are not only accomplished athletes and expert outdoor professionals, but also who are exceptionally kind, warm, thoughtful, funny humans. Mikaela and Joe fostered such a great group dynamic — smiles, jokes, and laughter were nearly always present. While we pushed ourselves with long milage days and big technical climbs, there was always time to smell the flowers, plunge in an alpine lake, enjoy the view, and be grateful that we were out there together. -Stephanie C.

This was my third Skurka trip and location, and my second 11-day expedition. The guides are exceptional in their skills, knowledge, fitness/energy, and importantly their leadership and emotional intelligence. The routes are always stellar, the scenery and experience breathtaking but at the same time I’ve never felt beyond my safety comfort level. Skurka guides are the best in the business in my opinion. -Craig M.

An incredible introduction to the High Sierra and Yosemite High Route! -Tim F.

Exceptional experiences seem by definition ephemeral. How quickly it all fades… you must love it in the moment for it only exists in the moment. For Andrew’s trips that’s true – how could one possibly hold onto all of the beauty, mirth, strength, satisfaction, and smiles? – but it’s also not true. A hiker fortunate enough to adventure with Andrew’s world-class team in some of the most beautiful places in the world comes away with skills and memories for a lifetime. Through this program I’ve discovered that my capabilities go further than I thought possible, my enjoyment of nature and backpacking is deeper than I can measure, and that the very best of times outdoors are somehow found with friends who were complete strangers just a few days prior. My ASA experiences have spurred me to new heights in my ‘normal’ life, opening new possibilities of adventure, challenge, and achievement, and in doing so helping me refine who I am, who I want to be, and how to get there. One thing I know for sure – part of who I am is a member of this crazy, inspirational, amazing community that loves hiking, loves talking gear, and loves pushing hard for big heights, big views, and big days. I am deeply grateful to Andrew and his exceptional guiding team for some of the most rewarding and fulfilling weeks of my adult life. -Danielle G.

Hope to attend a Brooks Range trip! Too much to say about how well run I feel the organization is. So happy I went. Beautiful country and pushed my limits to learn more and be a better hiker. -Leah M.

If you yearn for wild spaces & places, Skurka Adventures can take you there. The trails provide a guided path into the wilderness. The trails are friendly, comfortable, & accommodating. Yet much of our protected wild spaces are beyond the reach of the footpaths. SA provides a guided journey to the untrammeled spaces that lie beyond. Imagine visiting a remote high basin by traveling by your own route. Your guides & teammates will determine the path. With experience comes wisdom & soon you will notice a new freedom as you will develop a confidence with traveling through trailless forests, meadows, talus, & snow to experience landscapes in ways that most can never know. -Gray R.

My 11-day expedition in the High Sierra exceeded all my expectations. I can think of no better introduction to off-trail navigation than one of these trips. Everything about Andrew’s operation is world-class: the guides are exceptional, the routes are sublime and the beans and rice will have you begging for seconds. -Sam M.

My 11-day trip was stunning: I got to experience some really unique, rarely visited, and awe-inspiring settings in Yosemite.  I left the trip with so much more confidence in my fitness and abilities on remote and wild terrain, navigational skills, and general backcountry proficiency.   I also couldn’t imagine a better group to have done it with – it was a week and a half of communal hard work towards a common goal and constant laughter from clients and guides working together as a team to create a memorable experience. -Gregg T.
Our version of the Yosemite high route was very tough, but very rewarding. My confidence in the backcountry has skyrocketed since this trip. It was a special experience with a bunch of special people. -Matt C.

Following bison trails on the Mirror Plateau while admiring snow-covered peaks in the distance (that are still in the park).

Yellowstone: Adventure

I highly recommend an Andrew Skurka Adventure guided trip. You’ll get a heavy dose of local knowledge, regardless of where you trek and learn many useful backcountry skills along the way.  I heard the name Skurka for the first time on a solo backpack in Glacier NP.  The impression was such that when I returned home, I immediately went out to get a copy of his Nat Geo Gear Guide book.  I’ve used principles laid out in the book to greatly improve my personal approach and technique, leading to logging more miles, experiences and ultimately more smiles.  Years later, a guided trip opportunity presented itself and I applied, was accepted and am forever grateful at the experience and boost in confidence. I intend to foster relationships formed during my first trip and expand my personal adventure threshold with additional Andrew Skurka Adventure trips to remote locations such as the Brooks Range in Alaska or canyoneering/packrafting in Utah’s backcountry. -Derick A.

We had highly skilled and experienced guides who know how to pass on their knowledge and maximize the experience of the hikers at every level of the group. Our experience was very good when the weather conditions weren’t, and fabulous when it was. Everyone’s needs were considered and addressed. The selection of group members was excellent, and we all enjoyed each other’s company, banter and made new friends. Totally worth it. -Tony W.

After three trips with the ASA team I’m looking forward to a fourth. The guides, locations, and clients all make the program an amazing experience. -Dodger

An unforgettable, tourist-free adventure to Yellowstone! The pre-trip planning was fantastic and helped me feel fully prepared for the real conditions. It was reassuring to have a dialed-in pack and know I was ready for the unpredictable weather. Venturing off the beaten path, we traveled off-trail through meadows, forests, and along ridgelines, truly immersing ourselves in the wilderness. Our guide’s expertise made off-trail travel feel safe and thrilling, as they led us to hidden gems like remote geothermal features and wildlife habitats far from the crowds. Camping under the stars, completely surrounded by nature, was the perfect way to unwind after each day’s adventure. I came away with new skills, a deeper appreciation for the park, and memories that will last a lifetime. -Jessica L.

Another great experience from Andrew Skurka. The trip itself was an adventure, one that I would never have undertaken on my own. But the real takeaway for me is the set of skills I acquired that I can apply to my own future trips. There are many small tips and tricks that make backpacking easier and more comfortable. And then there are the larger skills around navigation and reading the landscape and route-finding, that transform the backpacking experience from blindly following one trail after another to being able to more freely explore a wilderness environment. -Greg J.

Another great learning experience and adventure from start to finish. Great group put together by Andrew. Scott and Nico were knowledgeable, able to communicate their knowledge, patient, and fun. The weather was colder and wetter than expected but Scott and Nico turned it into a master class in how to deal with it. Wildlife viewing was also a bonus. -Dave and Michelle H.

-Suresh C.

Cannot recommend these trips enough. Friendly to beginners, awesome for veterans. Great mix of challenge and fun and done in settings that absolutely cannot be beat. -Tiffany L.

GTNP 5days – yet another excellent experience with ASA! Even in bad weather there are lessons to be learned and maintaining a positive mindset enhances any experience! -Daniel M.

Having been on 3 Skurka 7-day backpack trips (San Juan Mountains, Alaska Brooks Range & Yellowstone), I highly recommend them. They are all very well-organized, and well thought out. All the guides are exceptional, highly experienced in navigation and in excellent physical condition, and can handle unexpected circumstances. I plan to be on future Skurka trips, maybe once a year, if possible. -Helen S.

Having joined the Skurka Adventures team on more than one trip, I’d recommend it to anybody looking to take that next step towards building your network and skill sets for backpacking. I once again picked up essential backcountry arrows for my backpacking quiver. -Brent R.

I joined the Fall 2024 5-day trip to Yellowstone with the intent to further develop my backcountry route planning and navigation skills.  Andrew and Witt tailored our route to include useful training segments and provided a masterclass in these areas, despite some challenging weather conditions.  Their deep knowledge of backcountry skills; responsiveness to client objectives; and commitment to providing clients a safe, challenging, meaningful experience was really exceptional.  They’re also just a pleasure to hike with. Would highly recommend it to anyone considering a trip. -Josh L.

I took a trip in the Yellowstone/Teton area and got everything I hoped for and more. I expected Skurka the hiker, and Skurka the gear expert, but was not expecting Skurka the naturalist or Skurka the fun conversationalist. This trip gave me the comfort and confidence to be out longer and more comfortably, and expect it to be a springboard to bigger adventures in the future. -Sean R.

-David S.

If your goal is to learn from experienced guides and make some new friends, Skurka trips are highly recommended. On these trips, you may encounter conditions you have never had to deal with before, and this could be your chance to do so with guides who can prepare you and help you through. -Brian L.

It was incredible to learn backcountry skills with some of the best folks to ever do it. I feel so much more comfortable planning future trips! -David G.

Our 5-day trip in cold and wet conditions in the Bridger-Teton National Forest of Wyoming was extraordinary and provided me with amazing memories I will retain permanently.  I gained confidence in managing inclement weather and knowledge of how my gear manages inclement weather.  I only have superlative things to say about the trip:  the guides (Andrew and Witt) were a perfect team, approachable and knowledgeable; the organization thorough; the wilderness vast and magnificent; the decision making sound.  I could go on and on with superlatives, but I will focus in on this:  Andrew is truly an expert at the day-to-day creation of routes and plans, adjusted as needed to weather and other considerations, that are challenging for a given group, pushing comfort zones and thereby growing knowledge and expertise for clients — while at the same time not going too far, keeping the routes/plans reasonable and safe.  It is remarkable to witness Andrew assess where a group is at and what nature is offering on any given day, and then determine and adjust plans almost to perfection.  To see Andrew guiding in the mountains is to see an artist at work. -Douglas L.

Perfect mix of people, education and wilderness adventure. -David R.

This is my second trip with ASA on paths through the wilderness that few dare to tread. Andrew’s team of expert guides – which include a significant number of PCT/CDT/AT Triple Crown hikers – are both exceptionally knowledgeable and patient instructors who love to share their experiences with the team. They know when to push and when to relax, when to lead and when to pass the reins on to others. The planning, logistics, and execution of both of my ASA trips has been top-notch. If you’re new to backpacking or a seasoned veteran looking for the company of others in the wilderness, then stop looking – You’ve found your tribe. -Scott D.

Skurka Adventures offers an unparalleled backcountry experience. Their trips take you to breathtaking destinations, led by top-tier guides who are true experts in their field. But what sets them apart is the wealth of knowledge they share. Beyond just enjoying the journey with a fun group, you come away with skills and insights that elevate your abilities as an independent backpacker. It’s not just a trip – it’s an education that empowers you for future adventures. -Stuart S.

Skurka and team know the backcountry crazy well  – they are super open and have plenty to teach if you are a newer or an experienced backpacker – I’ve done two trips and both were wonderful. – Andy H.

Taking a Skurka trip is a great opportunity for intermediate level backpackers to polish their light/ultra lightweight backpacking and adventuring skills. The guides are really elite – so there’s a ton of helpful information, tips and tricks, as well as learning from observing what happens. Even if you have significant pieces of strategy, tactics and gear already in your quiver it’s really useful to be able to practice in the somewhat lower stakes context of a guided trip where many of the basic logistics are handled and there are experts around to advise and help w/ guardrails. -Hays

This was my first Skurka experience and it was everything I expected and hoped for – a challenging, soul-nourishing, educational experience that would prepare me to begin planning my own trips in the future. Well worth the investment, it was an incredible experience! -Wendy M.

This was my first Skurka trip and it exceeded my expectations!  How often do you get to challenge yourself while immersed in the beauty of Yellowstone?  The guides (Andrew and Jose) were both very perceptive to our group’s needs and didn’t hesitate to pivot due to weather or how the group was feeling.  I learned how to use a compass and navigate in the backcountry, safely ford rivers all while hanging out with a great group of people, many of whom I will stay in touch with. It was an awesome experience and I can’t wait to return in the future. -Steph S.

This was my first trip with Andrew Skurka Adventures. I signed up hoping to continue to refine my skills in backcountry navigation in a new location. This trip did not disappoint, we did a good amount of off trail hiking and route finding that I’m sure will translate to my future outdoor experiences. The guides placed an emphasis on group decision making and discussion that reinforced skills we learned. I highly recommend these trips for those who are looking to challenge themselves and grow as an outdoor explorer. -Lex P.

Wyoming was spectacular. I will never forget the stunning mountain vistas, sun-drenched meadows, or seeing a huge gray wolf disappear into the shadowy forest. Thank you for introducing me to this part of the country under the expert guidance of Scott and Witt. What a magical trip! -Danielle C

Yellowstone exceeded expectations far and away.  I could easily spend another two weeks exploring and still not see everything this vast National Park has to offer.  Skurka Adventures is without a doubt one of the best ways to explore this extraordinary place on foot. -Gregg C.

Yellowstone was my second Skurka Adventure and it did not disappoint! Andrew and his team do such a great job in providing exceptional experiences. They think of every detail and will go above and beyond for clients. The guides I have had on my trips have been very knowledgeable, experienced and down-to-earth making it easy to put my trust in them to lead me thru the wilderness. I have no hesitation in signing up for another Skurka Adventure. I know it will be an epic adventure! -Sherry J.

Exceptional fall colors in Teton Wilderness on a soggy September day

Yellowstone: Expedition

Fabulous trip, fabulous group.  My fourth guided trip which says a lot! Richard and Mikaela were great and listened to our group. We got a zero day on the trident plateau which was memorable. Overall great experience. So much wildlife and got some alpine terrain in a fabulous location. –Rob B.

The Bridger-Teton NF and Yellowstone NP are wonderful locations to get immersed in the wilderness. Thanks to our guides Mikaela and Richard, I managed to leave behind my fears of grizzlies and wolves, but with growing respect for these great animals, and to secure my tent for storms. Once out there, a thunder storm sounds like music, and nightly elk cries and wolf howls convert into morning fiction stories to be continued during the trip. With astonishment we observed how a grizzly ran down a slope right into an elk herd, but they seemed not to get nervous. The grizzly ran through the herd and than up the opposite slope somewhere close to where our night camp was supposed to be. I experienced one of the most breathtaking landscapes on your off trail hike to and on the Trident ridge. This is why I appreciate so much the Andrew Skurka off travel routes. Part of my heart and mind are still out there. -Sandy E.

The expedition trips are a fantastic way to assess skills, gear, and preparation for adventuring in wild spaces in a beautiful setting overseen by expert leaders and teachers.  They have built my confidence and readiness to pursue some of my own adventures in the future, which I hope will include familiar faces from my Skurka groups – the work that goes into constructing groups is evident in how quickly bonds are formed during the trips. -Gregg T.

Sunset in Dolly Sods Wilderness — yes, in West Virginia

West Virginia: Fundamentals

All around ideal experience. I was in an A-level group and it was just challenging enough for beginners. The instructional stuff was useful for our level too, although I was impressed everyone knew what they were doing. -Jeff L.

Even with all of the incredible tools and live support Andrew and his team gave me in the eight weeks before my fundamentals of backpacking course, I was still a bit nervous to get out there for the first time! Those nerves went away twenty minutes as soon as we started our trip. I could immediately tell that this was a professionally run, detail oriented operation and I was in great hands with Matt and Kat. They made a great team and were able to teach me so much in just three days. And most importantly – it was a blast! Matt, Kat, and the six other clients in our group were amazing, interesting people who made great companions for our adventure. I now feel prepared to start trying out more backpacking trips on my own and with friends, I’m also really looking forward to planning my next Skurka trip in 2025! -Alex S.

I am a lifelong nature lover and have done a fair amount of day hiking in my lifetime – but I had never been backpacking before signing up for this beginner class offered by Andrew.  The experience was exceptional – Andrew’s approach is to share wisdom and knowledge, provide resources, set goals and milestones to achieve them before the trip so that participants arrive ready to fully engage in the experience and feel that we are capable of planning and safely carrying out a backpacking trip by the time we are finished.  I am still a beginner, but feel like I have learned so much and am confident that I could plan my own trip that would be safe for my still-beginner level.  I also left knowing I will be looking at other Skurka experiences where I can build on the basic skills I have gained.  The location of my trip – the Seneca Rocks area of the Monongahela National Forest – was just stunning.  Challenging terrain in some parts, but so beautiful and peaceful.  I could not be happier with this whole experience. -Lucy S.

I had been away from backpacking for four decades and wanted to learn new techniques and skills. The fundamentals class was perfect. I highly recommend it for new backpackers or those just learning to pick up new skills. -Ed B.

I have traveled with many different companies in varying types of adventures, but Skurka’s organization is without parallel. The organization, helpfulness, education, and destinations are all exceptional. A trip with him carries my highest recommendation. –Guy D.

I recently attended a three-day Fundamentals trip with Andrew Skurka Adventures in the Dolly Sods, West Virginia, and it was a game-changer for me as a hiker. The knowledge I gained on this trip, particularly from my guide Katie Gerber, was invaluable. Her extensive experience and insights helped me understand so much more than I ever could have learned on my own. From refining my packing list and trip planning to honing navigation skills on and off trail, Katie and the Skurka online curriculum equipped me with tools I’ll use for every future adventure. I even learned how to properly tie off a guy line and got introduced to new online trip planning resources. Plus, no more relying solely on prepackaged meals—I now feel confident creating my own backcountry food plans! Above all, the camaraderie and fun I experienced with my group made this trip unforgettable. I can’t thank Andrew Skurka Adventures enough for this incredible experience. -Woody B.

I thoroughly enjoyed the course. Guides and teammates were awesome, learned a lot and had a lot of fun. Don’t be intimidated by Andrew’s reputation – the courses cater for varying fitness levels. -Tom B.

I thought my trip with Brandon and Jackie was a fantastic introduction to modern backpacking. I learned a ton of new skills and got to enjoy some quality time in one of the premier backcountry areas in the Mid-Atlantic. I also really enjoyed getting to know the other clients on the trip. I highly recommend Andrew Skurka and his team. -Aaron M.

My backpacking trip to West Virginia was incredible. It gave me the rare chance to completely unplug, immerse myself in nature, and connect with both friends and new, kind and generous people. The guides were not only knowledgeable but created a space that felt both welcoming and inspiring. I left feeling more grounded and with a newfound appreciation for backpacking. This experience was meaningful, and I’m already looking forward to returning for future adventures. -Adam N.

Taking a trip with this group has been one of the fondest memories of my life! The trip was extremely well-organized and run, and our guides were some of the most knowledgeable and friendliest people I’ve ever met. The planning curriculum was very comprehensive and equipped me with the knowledge I need to plan my own trip, and the field curriculum has made me more confident in my abilities to survive in the wilderness. Overall, I would encourage everyone to join these trips—I can’t think of a better way to spend a few days. I will definitely be going back for more! -Kanishk M.

The fundamentals trip exceeded my expectations which were high to start with. I had all the gear, but I really didn’t know how to use it fully, and now I do. I had hoped to come away from the trip comfortable in knowing how to use my gear and where to camp, but the trip provided me with so much more. The group they assembled was perfect and the guides knew so much not only about backpacking but also about the flora and fauna around us. -Joe M.

This course was a genuinely life-changing experience. Like everyone else, before this course, I felt a little apprehensive of going into the wilderness because I didn’t know what was important for survival or not. After going through the online and field courses, I feel confident in my ability to judge and plan future backpacking trips. The instructors are extremely kind and patient. They made me feel supported throughout the learning journey and addressed every concern (related or unrelated haha). The people I met on my backpacking trip were awesome as well. Overall, one of the best learning experiences of my life, I cannot recommend this course enough. -Dhruv S.

This is my second ASA trip with Katie as Lead Guide; and both trips were excellent. I’ve found that Katie has the unique ability to provide sterling back-country guidance and top-notch skills training to the group, but to also help each client individually with their concerns during the trip. Her leadership, I believe, made both trips more enjoyable for each team member as well as added to the overall positive ASA experience. Much thanks Katie! -Aytch S.

This is my second Skurka trip. I have not wavered from my opinion that this is a world class organization with world class people. I’m super impressed! I will be applying for another adventure next year and can’t wait to see what will be available. -David G.

West Virginia: Adventure

ASA does a good job of delivering on its promises. The education in traveling through wild areas is well-delivered and the guides were first class. Backpacking is not easy, but if that’s what you want, Andrew Skurka has built a team who can help you do it safely and successfully. -Jeff G.

Brandon and Kat were absolutely phenomenal guides. Their extensive knowledge of the area made me feel safe and confident on the trail, and their enthusiasm for the outdoors was contagious. I learned so much from them about hiking, camping, and the natural world. I look forward to returning to this and other areas on a Skurka adventure. -Ricardo L.

Great trip even with inclement weather. Guides were always positive and helpful. Learned a lot about the location history, geography and plant life in addition to new backpacking skills. -Jim C.

I was in group 1c for the West Virginia trip in the days following Hurricane Helene. It rained for the first three days of the trip and water levels were high in all the streams, creeks and rivers. None of that mattered because both Katie and Matt somehow made it a fun experience and taught us to trust our gear and see what the limits were. I know for a fact I wouldn’t have seen what I saw or experienced what I did without their leadership and positive outlook. Sure there was a lot of type 2 fun but I would also say there was just as much type 1. Dolly Sods is a great place to go but it’s even better when you have guides taking you to trails and places that you would never find on your own.  It’s an experience that I will always be grateful for and look forward to more Skurka guided trips in the future (Hopefully with Katie and Matt as guides again). -Jeff L.

I’ve been on two Skurka 5 day adventures now. On both occasions all of my expectations have been surpassed and I’ve walked away with new skills and a new level of confidence that I can take with me in my everyday life and on the next adventure!! -Barry D.

Not what I was expecting. When I signed-up for a Skurka trip I thought I was signing up for a backpacking trip in West Virginia… what I got was an online interactive course on backpacking.  In the weeks leading up to the trip we covered numerous topics including:  physical preparation, gear selection, use of map apps, and trip planning. In the field we covered the use of maps and compass plus many other basic skills. I have been backpacking and camping for several decades and thought my skills were well honed.  As a result of our guides I learned new skills… my pack got lighter, my orienteering skills reached a new level and I now have the ability to effectively use technology to navigate in the woods. As a bonus I have some new friends that enjoy the outdoors the same as I do and hopefully we will camp together again. -Mark D.

The pre-trip curriculum and field instruction were perfectly tuned to prepare us for the challenges of backpacking through epic rainfall in the wake of Hurricane Helene. From gear and route selection, to strategies for crossing swollen streams or bushwhacking around them, our guides imparted the knowledge that allowed us to proceed with confidence and enjoy the adventure while learning about the botany, geology and history of Dolly Sods. -Bob W.

This trip was one of a lifetime so far. Kat and Brandon are in a class of their own. When you meet leaders that inspire confidence in yourself you know that you are in for a great learning experience. This was my first experience with water crossings, hiking in the rain and setting up camp in the rain. As bad as it seemed at the time, I would not trade the experience. Our “team” made for a great trip! -Greg R.
This was my second Skurka edition – moving up to 5 days – and I can attest of the one constant of these trips: quality. In the planning, the guiding, the locations, the food, the teaching, and all around decision making. It was great to see the guides adjusting the itinerary in real-time because of all the rain and to be able to follow their thought process. Thank you, Andrew and the entire team! -Anne R.
