114 testimonials from our 2025 season

For twelve seasons I’ve asked our clients to complete a post-trip survey to gather feedback about our guides, locations, meals, and curriculum, plus their overall satisfaction. Reviewing the results is a time commitment — this year it’s a 159-page document, and I have a few more pages of quantitative data! But it’s entirely worthwhile effort, as clients confirm what we’re doing right and give me a checklist of improvements for the next season. Plus, AI has made the process much easier this season!

The 2025 survey was taken by 325 clients, an impressive 80 percent response rate. Confidence in these results should be high, then.

Overall Satisfaction

The first question in the survey is the most important: “Overall, how satisfied are you with your experience?”

I’ve asked this exact question since the beginning, and on a 5-star scale the results have been:

  • 2025: 4.83
  • 2024: 4.82
  • 2023: 4.81
  • 2022: 4.82
  • 2021: 4.88
  • 2020: 4.88
  • 2019: 4.92
  • 2018: 4.81
  • 2017: 4.88
  • 2016: no trips
  • 2015: 4.90
  • 2014: 4.85

These scores have been remarkably consistent through the years, with just a 0.11 spread between the lowest-rated and highest-rated years. Consider, too, that in this time the program has grown four-fold, that I now guide only 15-20 percent of the trips, and that I now manage a team of people who prepare our clients, gear, and food.

Testimonials from 2025

At the end of the survey, we ask clients to provide a testimonial. Of our 2025 alumni, 114 did. I will share them all here, to thank our clients for being so flattering and to leave no doubt with prospective clients that our program is truly extraordinary. You can also read an additional 207 testimonials from 2024, 204 testimonials from 2023262 from 2022179 from 202176 from 2020 and 110 from 2019.

I wish I had done a trip sooner. I remember receiving emails and seeing FB posts about Andrew Skurka Adventures and I convinced myself that they were meant for someone with more experience, or who was fitter, or younger (I’m 68). In reality—these trips are for EVERYONE! The guides are some of the most experienced, knowledgeable, and skilled backcountry adventurers imaginable—and they dedicate themselves to sharing their knowledge and creating a safe space for you to practice old skills and learn new ones. -Sandy N.

After being a lifelong backpacking enthusiast and adventurer returning to the sport after a long hiatus due to some injuries, and recently switching over to UL gear, this was my first guided trip ever, and the 11-day signature route through Escalante exceeded all my hopes, dreams, and expectations by a huge margin. I went into it with an open mind, team-first mentality, and a desire to learn as much as possible and grow personally… The guide team (Mikaela and Witt) were incredibly capable, professional, kind, accessible, and genuinely caring. My fellow teammates were amazing people and despite wildly different backgrounds, we gelled right out of the gates and had an amazing experience together. The provided breakfasts and dinners were also nutritious and great! This is a REALLY well-run operation. -Trey H.

I am a delighted 4x repeat client with Andrew Skurka Adventures. Each program and route has enhanced my self-sufficiency in the backcountry. My most recent canyoneering trip was spectacular, and developed my knowledge of roped safety systems in the canyoneering environment, while keeping the core identity of lightweight backpacking at the center. It’s a beautiful synthesis of remote lightweight off-trail and technical canyoneering only found within this program. Thanks to the fabulous guides, I feel I could join nearly any technical canyon trip with confidence, AND a reasonable pack weight! -Aaron N.

Traveling with ASA is how you go from riding with training wheels to flying on your own. All the while enjoying spectacular scenery and interesting companions. Worth every penny. -Logan

I have been eyeing a trip with ASA for several years now and am so glad I finally made it happen! Five days learning and living in the back country of Utah was everything I wanted. I went into the experience expecting a lot of Type 2 fun—I pictured hard days that felt satisfying at the end. And I got some of that, but I was surprised by how much pure Type 1 fun I had too. These trips are well planned. The guides are incredible humans. The location is stunning. The food is good and the loaner gear high quality. But what I loved the most was that the whole program seems so obviously geared towards investing in the participants’ future adventures, not just providing a memorable one-time experience. Give a person a backpacking trip and they’ll have a great week; teach a person to backpack and they’ll have a great life. -Nora B.

I finally understand after my 3rd Skurka trip how fundamental the education component is to the ethos of the program. These trips are designed to make you a better backcountry traveler in the context of a really awesome adventure. Anyone can pick up a backpack and walk into the wilderness—how safe, rewarding, and enjoyable that experience is depends a lot on planning, knowledge, and skill. Skurka Adventures makes sure you are on point to go out, handle the unexpected, and come home again. -Marvin K.

A Skurka trip will expand your idea of what backpacking is and what’s possible for you. You learn big things (off-trail navigation) and small things (new snack ideas) in an environment that makes it feel safe to get out of your comfort zone. The experience combines rigor and fun, helps you avoid a lot of trial and error, and gives you tools and concepts to use on your own trips. Everything is geared to helping you be a better backpacker. It can feel like a leap of faith to spend days in the wilderness with strangers, but the group dynamic was in fact one of the highlights. Before the trip ended, I was already wanting to do another one. -Charlotte K.

Skurka trips are a combination of intense learning and adventure. You will go places not even your guides have been. You will discover them together for the first time. -Kevin J.

Just finished a High Sierra five-day adventure trip with Andrew Skurka‘s guide group and I can’t speak highly enough of the overall experience, it was an epic adventure! Starting with an online class curriculum geared towards beginning and intermediate backpackers, we covered everything from gear choices to campsite selection to on-trail and off-trail map and compass route navigation, and all of this instruction was then translated to the backcountry experience. Our guides were extremely accomplished and experienced backpackers… Our group was carefully selected and matched very well for ability and attitude, even though there was a large range in age and backgrounds, so it was very interesting and fun. Hiking in a group was one of my hesitations, but it turned out to be one of the best things about the experience. -Rob W.

My Yellowstone trip was the longest I’ve ever spent in the backcountry and the most consecutive miles I’ve ever backpacked. Going in, I had very low confidence about being in bear country, but the experience pushed my edges in the best way. I came away with stronger skills, greater confidence, and a deeper appreciation for the wilderness. It was both educational and inspiring—I’d recommend it to anyone. -Abby C.

A fantastic experience. I’ve spent dozens of nights backpacking, but my off-trail experiences were limited. The trip really improved my confidence on that front. Andrew and Katie were accessible and did a great job matching the group; I quickly felt at ease and bonded with folks, even though I was older. The route was perfect, and the meals solid. The trip leaders were not only great instructors, but also great people. Whether you are looking to get into backpacking or have experience, I’d encourage signing up for a trip. -Ed T.

The Canyoneering trip in Southern Utah was my 5th trip with Skurka and the first one with my 27 year old son. It was our first big trip together in 10 years or so. He told me it was the coolest thing he’s ever done. It was the coolest thing either of us had ever done – priceless and unforgettable. -Andy B.

I signed up for 11 days in the Brooks Range seeking a challenge, and that’s exactly what I got. Wilderness travel through Alaska is physically and mentally testing… This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience with plenty of type II fun, and the most special part? THE PEOPLE. Phenomenal guides and incredible, like-minded tripmates. I wouldn’t go to the Brooks Range with any other guide organization. -Steph C.

I approached my first Skurka trip with some trepidation after leading my own trips for a number of years… I learned so much more than I expected. But beyond that, the others on the trip were prepared, kind, generous, and supportive, while the guides were people I found myself admiring as much for their experience in the backcountry as much as their humanistic qualities. Normally I’d recommend others to shy away from guided trips, but to all those looking to be a better backpacker or just to have a great experience in the wilderness, I would 100% recommend looking into Skurka’s trips! -John S.

This was my fourth trip with ASA and first time to Alaska. The care put into the program has been evident on all my trips, but everything was even more noticeable and impactful in an environment with as many challenges and as much majesty as the Arctic: thoughtful decisions on group construction before the trip that led to a really close-knit team who propped each other up in tough terrain or weather, constant evaluation of the route before and during the trip… This trip was a stunning way to experience the Brooks Range. -Gregg T.

Grand Staircase Escalante: Adventure & Expedition

The Skurka trip to Utah was a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to learn and enjoy backpacking in Escalante, Utah. The educational aspect of the trip was amazing, and I will be using the information I learned on other trips. Navigation using compasses and maps was quite the learning experience. The trip leaders are patient and allowed each individual to get what they wanted from the trip. Our trip leaders encouraged us to push outside the box and embrace the experience. From cowboy camping to using webbing to navigate slickrock, we all had something to push us for the better. In my experience, I had an injury before the trip even started. Andrew and Katie worked with me to come up with a viable solution so I could still go on the trip. -Valerie E.

The quality of the guides is beyond compare. After not having backpacked in over 30 years, I was feeling very apprehensive about my abilities—the Andrew Skurka people were very skillful in several ways which enabled me to have a successful trip. First, I was evaluated and placed in the group that was perfect for me. Then the team helped me prepare prior to my adventure with the online courses. During my adventure, the experienced guides were there to offer help, but this was very much my trip and experience. Amazing job Andrew Skurka! Thank you so much. -Julie C.

Thanks for a great trip and introduction to a fun and inspirational backpacking community, Andrew Skurka. -Martha S.

These trips are not your average trail-following backpacking trips. From the moment we stepped into the Escalante River—not to cross it, but to walk in it—I knew I was in a new world. This was a trip where our guides offered us two options at the beginning of the day and we, the group, decided what we wanted to do—no trails for us, thank you. Every day we were bushwhacking, and loving it. -Eric P.

Just what I wanted: an experience I could not achieve if I planned it. Excellent pre-trip prep, meals, and backcountry experience. Looking forward to the next one. -Ross G.

I have been eyeing a trip with ASA for several years now and am so glad I finally made it happen! We did not get placed in our first-choice location, but I honestly couldn’t have asked for a better experience. -Nora B.

The design and execution of the Skurka Adventures Fundamentals trip is unparalleled. The pre-trip curriculum and in-trip experience support beginning backpackers of any ability and experience level in learning the fundamentals of the craft while they enjoy an unforgettable excursion. The instructors and guides are impressively knowledgeable, experienced, and dedicated—and cool people to boot. And the groups are thoughtfully assembled to get along well while drawing from diverse backgrounds. Trust me: it’s worth it! -Jesse L.

This was truly an amazing trip. The guides, the scenery, and members of our group made it truly memorable. I came on with some backpacking experience, but off-trail skills are another level! The beauty and magnificence of the scenery of the backcountry was mind-blowing. Our guides were extremely knowledgeable and established a caring atmosphere from day one, nurturing a very supportive environment. Participants felt comfortable sharing questions and concerns which led to a great learning environment. -Nathalie

Just completing the online curriculum gave me the confidence to take a two-night solo trip, having never backpacked before. -Tom B.

As meteors and satellites streaked across the sky, as stars and constellations aligned, and as the sun rose and set over the Escalante river and canyons, my time with Mikaela, Jose, and the seven other team members became something sacred. We learned new skills, pushed ourselves physically, and grew more confident in our backcountry abilities. We found ancient petroglyphs and scattered lithics that connected us to the land’s past stewards, vibrant flowers and resilient vegetation that spoke to the resilience of life, and geological formations that were shaped over eons. We drank from potholes with varying levels of “ickiness” and scouted out discreet spots for “bio-breaks.” Mikaela and Jose fostered a beautiful environment for us to trust each other with our vulnerabilities and be comfortable being ourselves. Our group was incredibly tight-knit and supported each other every step of the way. At the end of the trip, I felt like I had “reset” my mind and was able to approach life with greater clarity and renewed optimism. If you’re reading this, don’t hesitate… sign up now! -Yunan J.

I just returned from a seven-day trip in Utah. It was the trip of my dreams! It was also the hardest thing I have ever done, as I had overestimated my fitness. Don’t be like me and neglect to factor in 29 pounds in your backpack. The classwork ahead of time was just the right amount and prepared me well. I was in a terrific group of supportive people from all walks of life, and the guides were basically superhuman in all the good ways: experienced, great teachers, hilarious, and fun while also loving and kind. I’m in an airport on my way home as I write this, and it all feels like a dream—a very good dream. (That’s the testimonial. To you, I want to let you know that I was behind the man who fell on our trip, so I witnessed Hunter, Christy, and Dan in an emergency setting. They were nothing less than amazing. Honestly, I have no words—only immense gratitude.) -Leise B.

Everything was expertly done. The planning curriculum was comprehensive and easy to follow. The communication between different members was easy to follow. The route is amazing and the guides were incredible. And our team meshed incredibly quickly and had a great time together. -Bruce M.

The trip was meaningful in many ways. I loved the place, route, the freedom it offered, the way we worked with the terrain, and how the guides supported us throughout. To my surprise, I enjoyed the map reading and struggles related to that. I also loved getting to know the people in the group. My next trip will be even longer. It grows on you as the days go by. -Agnes

Skurka provides an excellent overall experience. Provides you with all of the tools you need to plan your own trips in the future. -Jim C.

I started backpacking during Covid and have gone on trips with most of the major guiding companies that operate in the western US. This was my second trip with Skurka, and I can say without a doubt that these are the best-run and most engaging adventures I have ever been on. Skurka plans excellent, untraveled routes through the most beautiful natural environments and prepares his guests to journey as deeply as possible into them. -David L.

This trip was a wonderful way to learn navigating off-trail travel in the desert from expert, elite guides who created a supportive learning environment. I got access to terrain I wouldn’t have felt comfortable entering on my own but now have the skills to return and explore. I know I can reach out to my guides for recommendations and advice for future adventures. -Kristen S.

When I woke up today, the first day being back from the trip, I was relaxed, strong, not stressed, and completely happy. It has been a long time since I have felt that way. Obviously, much of this is due to the hiking and the spectacular scenery, but the experience, knowledge, and patience of the guides very much influenced the outcome of the journey. Thank you. -Scott B.

The Skurka team provides a unique backcountry experience by teaching you how to move through wild areas safely and confidently. If you want to backpack, you’ll be better at it after you go with them. -Jeff G.

Another great ASA trip, this time with Katie and Andrew as guides. An unusually heavy rain the night before and morning of start required on-the-spot modification in the interest of risk management of our route plan starting on first day. This was a great teaching moment for our group to never become so fixed in your thinking (“summit fever” anyone?) as to endanger your own safety or that of your travel companions in the face of the actual situation. As a bonus for our modification of Day 1 timing, we got to witness the absolute leading edge of a flash flood as we crossed the shallow wash of Pine Creek, even if it was only eight inches deep! Katie and Andrew were fantastic guides, balancing the various preferred learning styles of people during instructional activities and giving just the right amount of subtle guidance to sectional hike leaders through difficult terrain. They were eminently flexible to the desires of the group, acceding to the group request/almost demand to add the Mamie Creek Natural Bridge to the Day 2 route, a first time visited for ASA over all its years in GSE and one of many trip highlights for all of us. -Kevin P.

I admit, I was a bit skeptical about this endeavor! I wasn’t sure that it would be worth the cost for an experienced backpacker. I wondered if I would be compatible with a group of strangers. I thought it would be tedious to plan for travel and meetup. The trip exceeded all of my expectations, from initial signup right to the very last step on the trail. The interview process was specific and thorough—I was assigned to a group with like skills and fitness. The weekly assignments were timely, helpful, and easy to complete with careful instruction, and all were beneficial and educational. The travel planning was so easy. Spreadsheets, Zoom meetings, and shared information allowed me to meet my team before the trip and arrange travel and housing together. The gear shakedown before the trip and at the start were literally “enlightening.” Both of our guides were exceptionally knowledgeable, patient, kind, and flexible. We had some atypical weather issues. Plan B kept us all comfortable! My team got along so well together—we enjoyed each other and laughed A LOT! The food was great! The campsites were perfect. The sunsets were gorgeous! Sometimes out of my comfort zone but always encouraged and supported. I learned so much about backpacking and navigation. I still have a lot to learn, but this course gave me a great foundation to build upon! I would highly recommend Skurka Adventure trips! -Cathy E.

The preparation and detail-oriented nature of these adventures is unsurpassed by any other group. I feel completely prepared and ready to learn or improve backpacking skills while enjoying exploring new remote areas. -Barb D.

Andrew’s program has given me the confidence to plan my own trips. The practice and feedback in researching conditions, navigating off-trail, and handling the unexpected have been invaluable. -Barb G.

My backpacking trip with ASA was an adventure that tested my limits and expanded my comfort zone. I would not have ventured such a trip without guides. The guides we had were amazing—they were very capable, knowledgeable, and supportive. I had complete faith in the guides to lead and teach us through the wilderness. We were also given opportunities to test our own navigation skills. I learned so much during this trip and I am sold that ultralight backpacking is the way to go. In our group, a couple of people were on their second, third, and fourth ASA trips, and now I know why. I will be back for more! -Alice M.

This was my second time on a Skurka Adventures trip. I found the five-day trip to be far better than the three-day, as it allowed a slightly more relaxed pace for learning new skills. As much as I loved the Sierra and the wildflowers last year, I thought Utah was much more diverse. Each day was totally different with new challenges—crossing rivers, climbing steep rock with hand-lines and ladders, crossing desert, descending into canyons. It really blew my mind. Highly recommend Utah. I’m sure all the Skurka guides are incredible, but Melodie and Jessica (and last year Melodie and Christy) are absolute badass rock stars. Simply incredible women. They are more mentors than guides. I learned so much, and have the utmost respect for each of them. My mixed-gender group last year was awesome, but there was something extra special about being in the all-women’s group this year. It’s hard to describe how uplifting it is to see women helping women in an environment/activity that is typically male-dominated. And let’s just say that the depth of sharing about tips and tricks unique to women in the backcountry—that discussion went far beyond what would have been discussed in a mixed-gender group. I hope the all-women groups continue to be offered, and expanded to include higher fitness/difficulty levels. -Lee W.

The all-women’s trip through Grand Staircase National Monument was perfect in every way. Sharing rain downpours, water crossings, petroglyphs, navigation instruction and route finding, vistas upon vistas, cowboy camping, challenging slickrock climbs, quicksand, rattlesnake, insightful personal stories, making new friends, laughing on a grand scale, and a sense of awe and appreciation rounded out a once-in-a-lifetime experience in a wild and remote wilderness. A huge Thank You, my cup is full. -Sally

What can I say, I have now completed two trips with Andrew Skurka Adventures, and I plan on going to each location in the future. What separates ASA from your normal backpacking trips is the amount of skill development with navigation on and off-trail and location-specific knowledge of the flora/fauna and geology. It is very learning intensive, but more importantly, it is fun to be with a group that somehow is perfectly matched. You not only learn from your expert guides but from the other group members as well. It’s a great experience and I look forward to going on more trips with ASA. -Jeff L.

Skurka Adventures offers unique guided trips to destinations that would otherwise be difficult to access or navigate, while helping you acquire the skills to do the same on your own. You’ll see things you’ve never seen before while testing your limits in a supportive environment led by guides with impressive backgrounds. -James L.

Traveling with ASA is how you go from riding with training wheels to flying on your own. All the while enjoying spectacular scenery and interesting companions. Worth every penny. -Logan

After a 10-year break from backpacking, diving into a 5-day adventure through Utah’s Grand Staircase-Escalante with Andrew Skurka and his crew was nothing short of epic. I thought I knew a thing or two about backpacking, but the hands-on learning—both before and during the trip—took things to another level. Each day brought a new route, fresh terrain, and unforgettable views. From mastering off-trail navigation to dialing in lightweight gear, nutrition, and fitness, the experience was a total game-changer. Best part? You get to test top-tier gear for free and walk away with new skills and new friends. Skurka’s team didn’t just deliver—they blew expectations out of the water. -Mohammad A.

I highly, highly recommend taking a trip with Andrew Skurka Adventures. From learning a new system of trip planning and organization that I will use for every adventure I plan in the future, to the actual five-day adventure itself, I had an amazing experience. I was unsure about taking a group trip as it was something I had never done before, but because of the matchmaking process used (which is unique to this company) my group felt more like a bunch of old friends that had been together for years, and I hope now that we will stay friends for years to come. The opportunity to learn new skills and get comfortable off-trail navigating was a goal of mine and this trip met that goal in spades in a setting of jaw-dropping beauty. Our guides Witt and Melodie were perfect. They inspired confidence, kept us safe, provided just the right amount of support while letting us lead routes so that we could learn when it was appropriate, and were there to lean on if needed. More importantly, they are just good, solid human beings, and I laughed a lot with both of them during our many trail conversations. Each is an encyclopedia of knowledge in their own fields and I feel lucky to have gotten to spend a few days with them. -Jeremy W.

My trip to Escalante was awesome. It was a great mix of challenging hiking and adventure. It exceeded my expectations. -Steve A.

I had a great beginner backpacking experience with a five-day trip in Escalante, Utah, trying out a completely new hobby with a safety net. The Andrew Skurka team provided a learning environment both before and during the trip, provided helpful feedback on fitness and gear, and offered gear to borrow. Because it is a group adventure, many of the details are already taken care of and the team has extensive knowledge in the location. We were led and coached by two seasoned guides, and I benefited from the experience of seven fellow hikers. We took turns navigating and leading the group, helped each other with gear hiccups, and laughed at our mistakes. I feel ready to tackle future hikes with family and friends. And when I’m ready to take my backpacking to the next level, I will look for another trip with the Andrew Skurka team. -Kirsten A.

This trip was exactly what I was looking for. I wanted to “treat” myself to a guided trip where I could learn some new navigation skills in an unfamiliar terrain. I really enjoyed the whole trip and felt like Andrew and the team were responsive, personal, and committed to providing an excellent experience. -Krystal

My course in Grand Staircase-Escalante exceeded my expectations and gave me something I truly wasn’t expecting: adventure. This was one of the top three backpacking trips in my lifetime. -Scott G.

The route was spectacular. I learned a ton about best practices for backpacking. The guides are amazing. I will plan to do another Skurka trip. -Cory M.

With this being my first trip with Andrew Skurka, being over 1800 miles from home and backpacking in different terrain, I had some real anxiety. When I pulled up to the gear check on a cool rainy Monday morning, my anxiety didn’t go away. I met my guides Melodie and Jessica and their non-threatening dispositions, I was able to start calming down. Melodie has such a sweet and calming presence. I loved the knowledge she brought about astrophysics and life to the trail and the presentations she made at camp. She challenged me beyond what I thought I was capable of doing and learning about myself. Her problem-solving skills were amazing. The knowledge, skills, encouragement, and calming energy made this trip amazing. Jessica was so entertaining and encouraging. I loved the experiences and excitement she brought to the trail. When I was at my lowest point, Jessica was right by my side encouraging me to keep moving, but also to recognize the achievements made. She too challenged me beyond my expectations. I loved how she brought yoga to the start of the day. Her problem-solving skills, challenging nature, and enthusiasm made this trip so amazing. I also loved how my guides complimented each other. Their very different personalities worked so well together. I would put complete trust in my guides on any trip. -Sherry J.

-Sandy N.

I signed up for the trip based more on the location than the experience. The field learning, guide expertise, and location were beyond my expectations. I highly recommend to anyone interested in taking hiking to another level to consider a Skurka adventure hike. 5 stars! -Tom I.

This was an incredible experience where my expectations were exceeded. Sarah and Christy were extraordinarily experienced and knowledgeable in not only guiding these types of groups but also in the fundamental skills that they taught us, the local terrain and what we could expect, and also how to make us feel confident and safe in navigating us through this amazing experience. -Sean O.

We had an amazing Utah desert backpacking trip! The guides were experienced, great teachers, and really challenged us, while also supportive and attentive to everyone’s sense of comfort. I never imagined we would experience such varied and beautiful terrain. We traversed sandy dunes, slickrock, cliffs and benches into deep canyons, rivers, and streams. We learned new skills along the way, like managing water, cowboy camping, self-care in the desert, and navigation skills. It was an amazing experience! I highly recommend! -Karen Y.

Want to take your navigation and/or scrambling skills to the next level? Do not hesitate to sign up, it will be worth your while. -Eva P.

This is my third trip with Andrew Skurka Adventures. It is always exciting to be able to interact with and learn from Andrew’s world-class instructors. This time, I had the opportunity to join a trip led by Katie Gerber and Audrey Abbott in the Grand Staircase area in Utah. We learned to traverse the canyons below, and the benches above. The scenery was amazing, and this 7-day trip was really adventurous. I look forward to joining another one of these treks! -Ben M.

Great experience. -Will G.

I had a wonderful experience on my 7-day trek in southern Utah with the Andrew Skurka Team. Both of our guides, Katie and Audrey, were fantastic and made the trek both incredibly memorable but also highly educational. This trek was a true embodiment of the word “adventure,” and I would highly recommend that anyone interested try one out. -Chad D.

Skurka Adventures challenged me to step outside of my comfort zone in a comfortable way. They prepare you so going into the trip you have the right expectations of what the experience will be like and what they require of you to prepare. No matter what trip you choose, you will have an unforgettable experience. -Jack D.

One of my top trips ever, even after five decades of outdoor adventures! The guides, the clients, and the location were all best in class. -Dodger

Skurka trips are top-notch. I feel an amazing sense of accomplishment after emerging from seven days in the wilderness. It’s an incredible thing to be able to spend a week being self-sufficient—carrying everything on my back and hunting for the next water source. My wilderness and navigational knowledge has grown enormously since I found Skurka’s trips. I appreciate that I now have the confidence to take my friends and family out into the backcountry and keep them safe and also have fun. -Alix M.

This was one of my favorite backpacking experiences of my life. Amazing area and such a wonderful group of new friends to share the experience with. Great adventure! -Mat F.

When I took my first trip with Andrew, I was an intermediate backpacker. I felt that in just that one trip I leveled up my backpacking skills by leaps and bounds as well as my confidence in off-trail navigation and route finding. What keeps me coming back is the unparalleled knowledge of the guides, and more importantly the community around these trips. Andrew and his team take great care in arranging groups. I have met so many amazing people because of them. -Absolutely

If you’re early career / paying off student loans and worried about the cost…. me too! I hit a wall learning solo and decided to relate to an expedition like a university course. My guides were incredible people who held space for us to be vulnerable, laugh and cry, and be uncomfortable at a growth edge. It mattered that Andrew and his team were committed to minimizing impact and keeping our route off the internet, and didn’t push lots of trendy gear. It was worth it. -Laura R.

A fantastic experience in a truly unique place, someplace that I never would’ve felt comfortable going alone or even with an experienced friend, but the guided trip made it achievable and incredibly enjoyable. -Brian C.

As a 67-year-old grandmother, I was able to hold my own in a group of 40/50 somethings. Skurka did a fabulous job in grouping suitable people together. I learned some new skills and did things I wouldn’t have wanted/been able to do solo. I also had FUN. -Cynthia F.

Experiencing the wilderness with Skurka Adventures always exceeds my expectations. The guides are tremendous. The opportunities to stretch myself are abundant. The other clients are amazing people from whom much can be learned. I am certain that I could come back innumerable times and never exhaust the amazement the experience offers. -Matthew M.

I went into it with an open mind, team-first mentality, and a desire to learn as much as possible and grow personally. In return, I learned more than I thought possible in myriad ways, and had a better, more positive, and powerful experience than words can explain. In the end, it was a transformative, bucket-list experience full of adventure and personal growth, as the guide team (Mikaela and Witt) were incredibly capable, professional, kind, accessible, and genuinely caring. Many thanks to the Skurka team for assembling such an amazing crew to pull together for this experience; my fellow teammates were amazing people and despite wildly different backgrounds, we gelled right out of the gates and had an amazing experience together. All in all, this experience was one of the top 10 of my life. It was completely amazing, and the logistics were all taken care of for us in such a professional way. The provided breakfasts and dinners were also nutritious and great! This is a REALLY well-run operation, and I would whole-heartedly recommend the Skurka program to anyone looking to grow and push their boundaries of understanding (and even comfort at times!). The guide team and program as a whole delivered a truly exceptional first-class experience that I’ll truly be forever grateful for! Many thanks!! -Trey H.

Their expert yet approachable style made it easy to build confidence in land navigation and gain insight into the desert landscape. -Jim B.

I very much appreciated that this female was 100 percent equal to the males in the group! -Michelle P.

This trip to southern Utah was absolutely incredible. The guides were so patient and willing to share their knowledge. I felt like I leveled up multiple years of backpacking in just one week with them. I bonded with everyone in our group and by the end of the week we were already planning our next location! -Rick A.

I am a fairly experienced backpacker, but I wanted to learn more about navigating off-trail and to feel more comfortable doing so. My Skurka adventure in Escalante/Glen Canyon did not disappoint. My two guides, Hunter Hall and Jose Mendez, were amazing teachers and guides. I now feel much more confident in traveling off-trail with a topographic map and compass and in the decision-making process needed to plan an off-trail route. I would not hesitate to go on another Skurka trip, because I know that I would learn more. -Brandon C.

Grand Staircase Escalante: Canyoneering

I went into this trip looking to refine my canyoneering skills and came away with so much more. The combination of technical challenges, thoughtful leadership, and deep knowledge of the landscape made for an unforgettable experience. Jeff and Sarah worked seamlessly together — their dynamic kept things grounded while still allowing for plenty of adventure. Andrew and team do a great job of creating an atmosphere where learning and exploration feel like one and the same. -Jason L.

-Aaron N.

As a general testament to what great experiences I have had on trips lead by Andrew Skurka Adventures, this is my fourth trip, and I will embark on my fifth later this summer. The experience on the 7-day canyoneering trip was completely unique to me. I was previously unaware, and subsequently impressed, that this is a full body contact team sport. Think rugby in canyons – with human pyramids, crawling, climbing and all the bumps and bruises. Despite a wide range of experience levels, the guides created a harmonious and supportive team that was essential for safe travel through the canyons while allowing everyone to learn at their personal level. They were adept at transitioning between taking the lead and relinquishing control for different trip segments to balance learning and safety. We traveled and “ghosted” a canyon that had only been done a few times and was new to both guides. This demonstrated their confidence and provided a learning opportunity for us to see how they made decisions in unknown situations. I don’t have enough superlatives to describe the guides. They were both obviously experts in their physical abilities and technical knowledge. This was augmented by their calm, patient personalities, positive attitudes, and eagerness to teach. Although they were each amazing individually, the synergistic whole was truly even greater than the parts. It was as if they could communicate telepathically. Moving through the canyons they always seemed to be exactly where they needed to be in relation to each other and the group without exchanging words. I imagine it must be mentally fatiguing to be “on” for 7-days straight and on top of that ensure that all the anchors and technical aspects of the trip remain as safe as possible, yet I never saw a hint of this, just infinite energy and a willingness to do more. I would go again in a heartbeat. -Karen L.

Skurka trips are a combination of intense learning and adventure.  You will go places not even your guides have been. You will discover them together for the first time. -Kevin J.

Fun, exciting and learning-intensive course to be exposed to canyoneering and the beauty of the Escalante grand staircase. -Johannes R.

The Utah canyoneering trip provided a unique opportunity to travel with and learn from some of the most skilled and kindest guides in the sport. My fellow group members were supportive and knowledgeable in their own realms of expertise—an absolute pleasure to adventure with. This trip is a fantastic way to experience Utah’s canyons in all their splendor. -Chris F.

This was my second trip with ASA, and it somehow exceeded my already high expectations. Our guides were exceptional—deeply knowledgeable, calm under pressure, and incredibly skilled at teaching and leading through technical terrain. The Escalante backcountry was stunning, and thanks to their expert guidance, our group moved through it like a true team. The weather kept us guessing at times, but it only added to the adventure. I’d do it again in a heartbeat. If you’re looking for a meaningful, challenging, and unforgettable experience with some of the best guides in the country, ASA is it. -Chris

Skurka’s canyoneering trips are a unicorn kind of trip that you won’t find anywhere else: they combine ultralight backpacking with technical canyoneering, and bring you to nature’s most majestic, remote, and FUN obstacle courses that you wouldn’t be able to safely access in any other way. These trips maximize off the grid adventuring and meaningful risk management. -Alyse M.

-Andy B.

The Brooks Range: Expedition

This was my second trip with Andrew Skurka Adventures, and I am so glad I decided to do another. The guide team was exceptional in providing instructional insights to our area and the route planning through the Alaskan wilderness allowed us to experience a part of the world that very few people will ever get to see. -Conor P.

This was an excellent trip, and the exact experience I was looking for when visiting the Brooks. I’m impressed by the quality of the other participants, particularly how well ASA matched our fitness levels. The food was great, the route spectacular. The cost of the trip is worthwhile due to the bush plane and safety logistics alone, but I feel like I learned a good amount of skills that I either didn’t have or have minimal experience with, despite having hiked several thousand miles and visited remote areas of the US. The Brooks is incredible, and I’m thrilled to have experienced it with great new friends. -Vinny

The trip to Alaska promised to be a trip of a lifetime, and it fully delivered! I feel now much more prepared to return to this, or a similar location, on a self-organized trip. I would, however, miss Katie and Aaron, who made the trip a lot more fun! -Roman S.

While all the technical aspects of my trip with AKA were superbly covered, my greatest and most enjoyable surprise was the makeup of the group. We were very well matched in fitness and experience. We were very like-minded in our interest for the outdoor and for Alaska. With the help of our guides, we gelled into a highly functional and emotionally connected team very quickly. In spite of the fact that I love solo hiking, I really, really enjoyed my time with the group. It turned a great trip into a truly exceptional one and I am very thankful to everyone, guides and participants, for making it happen. -Jorge L.

This was my third trip, second to Alaska, and I continue to come back because of Andrew’s extraordinary guides, the route planning, skills teaching, group matching, and the overall thoroughness of the way he runs his business. -Joseph B.

This was my second trip with Andrew Skurka Adventures, and I am dumbfounded by how much I continue to learn. I considered myself a highly competent backpacker before, but after each of my trips I have leveled up considerably. I’ve learned new ways to read the geology and vegetation to pick better routes; deepened my ability to read topographic maps; and even picked up some new ideas for food management. I gained almost as much from the other group members as I did from the guides themselves. -Nick B.

The Brooks Range challenged me like no other trip, yet ASA guided me to a win! -Jim B.

This was my fourth trip with ASA and first time to Alaska. The care put into the program has been evident on all my trips, but everything was even more noticeable and impactful in an environment with as many challenges and as much majesty as the Arctic: thoughtful decisions on group construction before the trip that led to a really close-knit team who propped each other up in tough terrain or weather, constant evaluation of the route before and during the trip based on conditions and group wants or needs, knowing when to push forward and when to have a snack break and take a little time to laugh during a big day. I felt so lucky to be on our route with our team every step of the way. Alaska tested the whole group in new ways through the trip, but we ended every day with smiles, a sense of wonder and marvel at how big and wild a place we were lucky to be moving through and camping in, and gratefulness for our guides, fellow travelers, and the marvels of the landscape. This trip was a stunning way to experience the Brooks Range. -Gregg T.

I signed up for 11 days in the Brooks Range seeking a challenge, and that’s exactly what I got. Wilderness travel through Alaska is physically and mentally testing: lots of tussocks and sponga, long, vast river valleys, snow-covered passes, daily knee-deep river crossings, perpetually wet feet, pesky mosquitos, 24 hours of daily sunlight. This was a once-in-a-lifetime experience with plenty of type II fun, and the most special part? THE PEOPLE. Phenomenal guides and incredible, like-minded tripmates. I wouldn’t go to the Brooks Range with any other guide organization. -Steph C.

I cannot recommend these trips enough. The guides are phenomenal. They are incredibly knowledgeable, patient, and absolutely passionate about their craft. Every aspect of Skurka’s trips are meticulously crafted and I genuinely feel like a more self-sufficient backpacker every time I go out with his team. If you’re on the fence about joining—DO IT! -Not provided

I chose Skurka Adventures because of their experience guiding in the Brooks Range, and they absolutely delivered. I went in hoping to gain more confidence with backcountry travel and navigation in remote terrain, and I left feeling stronger and more capable. The guides did a great job listening to our goals and making sure we worked on them daily, whether it was route-finding, river crossings, or learning to read the gentle shades of green and brown that signified dry or wet conditions. One moment that stands out was cresting a steep rise on our second night and looking down into a vast, flat-bottomed canyon where we’d spend the night. It was stunning. The vastness of the Brooks Range was humbling, and the beauty of Gates of the Arctic stayed with me every day of the trip. -Brent

The whole trip was amazing. A trip in the Brooks Range is complicated. The logistics and planning were flawless. I couldn’t have asked for better guides, and I learned a lot. The other clients were also great, and it was just a great experience. -Cormac H.

Skurka hires highly experienced and savvy guides who both lead a group safely and are invested in individual and group-level teaching and skill-building. Being good at something is one thing, being able to facilitate and develop other people’s experiences of it is another, and Skurka and his team really nail it. -Hays

Interested in Therm-a rafting? Then come to Alaska! Our group enjoyed exceptionally good and warm weather. Thanks to the remoteness of the area, we observed unspoiled wildlife: a huge sandy-colored grizzly bear trying to find out if we could be his tasty dinner (but a determined call from our entire group made him change his mind); a big white wolf following a moose; a moose mother with her calf walking uphill to a pass, or a ground squirrel observing us from its lookout before hiding in a hole. The landscape is breathtaking. Every valley and pass are different. We very much enjoyed sliding down some snow-covered slopes on our butts. Indigo, the ranger in Beetles, gave us a detailed introduction to the political ecology of the Park, and in Anaktuvuk Pass, a Nunamiut Elder shared the history of his people with us at the museum. Jeff and Mikaela were excellent, very knowledgeable guides. It has been an unforgettable experience; part of my heart is still wandering out there side by side with the wolves and mooses. -Sandy

This was the perfect way to see Alaska, with both adventure and mitigated risk. -Brad M.

Backpacking in Gates of the Arctic is truly a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity…and now I’ve done it twice with ASA! It’s a difficult place to get to, and a difficult location in which to hike, but I again had an amazing experience, able to enjoy being in a very, very remote, wild, and vast location while employing all the physical and mental skills I’ve developed over years of backpacking. Our guides were incredible, perfectly balancing their roles as leaders with a light touch that left so much of the planning and responsibility to the clients. I can’t recommend the ASA Alaska experience any more highly…truly the trip of a lifetime. -Michael W.

My first Alaska trip could not have gone better. Granted, some of this was luck of the draw with unusually good weather and lower than expected mosquito pressure. But Jeff’s unending knowledge of the outdoors totally immersed us into the Alaska wilderness. We were nibbling on edible plants, identifying tracks, assessing scat, and saw some incredible wildlife. The terrain is difficult and sometimes terrible to traverse; but the rewards are worth it. -Jeff L.

Epic trip. Yes, there was some tough hiking, but that adds to the flavor of the journey. Great scenery. Couldn’t have asked for anything better. I’ll have great memories to look back on…learning new skills, having fun with other hikers, making new friends. -Dennis B.

5th Trip with Skurka Adventures and this was probably the best trip of all of them. I will say it again, this was my 5th trip! It was challenging due to location and logistics but worth the time and every penny. Our guides were excellent and our group was cohesive and incredibly supportive of everyone through every situation. We all thoroughly enjoyed the trip, the people, and the challenges, and we couldn’t have been luckier on the weather. If you’re on the fence about joining an upcoming trip, don’t let another year slip away and join! The skills, people, and community will all improve your future outdoor experiences. I am appreciative of the opportunities and skills bestowed upon me through this program. -Rob B.

I highly recommend Skurka for anyone interested in an extended backpacking in the Brooks Range. They did an outstanding job of figuring out the complex logistics, e.g., bush planes, how to transport fuel and bear spray, etc. The guides are very knowledgeable and experienced. Also, the large group size (9) provided a sense of safety as we moved through grizzly bear habitat. -Tom J.

It was a perfect trip! It was my first time in Alaska. We spent 11 days in the Brooks Range. This trip far exceeded all my expectations. What a beautiful, incredible, and truly wild place! -Cesar

Skurka Adventures is the number one guided backpacking service. If you want to gain the skills and feel safe/confident in the back country, a trip with this company is the place to start. You will save a lot of time and money while being guaranteed a great trip, meeting new potential backpacking partners along the way. -Chad M.

My recent trip to the Brooks Range was truly the trip of a lifetime. The top-notch preparation and professionalism throughout the entire process make me eager for my next adventure with Andrew Skurka’s guiding program. Our guides, Witt and Scott, were the perfect combination of expertise, humor, and support! I felt like I made lifelong friends. The program’s ability to pair groups with such strong cohesion is spooky in its accuracy. I came away feeling challenged, fulfilled, and hungry for more. I will definitely be booking another trip soon. -Sean R.

A trip to the Brooks Range, Alaska, with Andrew Skurka Adventures was one of the greatest of my life adventures! A true trip of a lifetime! The guides were incredibly knowledgeable and equipped with “joie de vivre” and a hilarious sense of humor. Spending those 7 days in the company of my admirable and very likeable hiking buddies and the guides was an utmost privilege that created lifetime memories. I did not want the trip to end. I will definitely be back. -Paul K.

I approached my first Skurka trip with some trepidation after leading my own trips for a number of years. There were the unknowns of giving someone else control, spending time in a special place with many strangers, and the ever-present imposter syndrome brushing shoulders with guides who may tell me I’m doing it all wrong. After taking the leap because the logistics of Alaska felt like too much to figure out, I came away from the experience with one of the best backpacking trips I could have hoped for. I learned so much more than I expected. -John S.

The High Sierra: Fundamentals, Adventure, & Expedition

If you want to learn or sharpen your backpacking skills, look no further. Every aspect of this trip from placement to planning to the trip itself met or exceeded any reasonable expectations. It was simply great! -Jane B.

ASA excels way beyond all others on three levels—navigation and off-trail skills development and education, Skurka breakfasts and dinners, and putting together well-matched fitness groups for camaraderie and best shared experiences in the wild lands of America. -Michael B.

Since it has been many years since I had done a multi-day backpacking trip, I was drawn to Skurka Adventures due to its focus on education. My High Sierra program did not disappoint. I felt well prepared by the pre-trip online sessions. The guides took a collaborative approach to the daily plan, involving all participants. Each day included a morning break with instruction in real-time topographic map interpretation, compass usage, GPS system instruction, etc.—all of which were then put into use for the rest of the day’s hike. The route provided a diversity of terrain and challenges that pushed us but expertly fit the physical capabilities of our group members. I was so impressed with the degree of organization from the compatibility of the group that was assembled to the daily meals provided (recipes greatly exceeded expectations). I now feel confident to do my own backcountry trips with friends but also look forward to my next Skurka adventure. -Steve L.

Our guides were extremely accomplished and experienced backpackers, both with long trail thru-hikes under their belt. Our group was carefully selected and matched very well for ability and attitude, even though there was a large range in age and backgrounds, so it was very interesting and fun. Hiking in a group was one of my hesitations, but it turned out to be one of the best things about the experience. The wildflowers and swimming in the Alpine Lakes and nights under the Milky Way with dry and moderate weather altogether was truly amazing. -Rob W.

My experience was 10 out of 10 and would recommend to anyone looking to hone in their off-trail travel skills or just looking for a great trip with like-minded people. The best part for me is that my Skurka trip will make every trip that I take after it safer and more enjoyable. -Kevin R.

I never started out planning to go on four ASA adventures, but I keep coming back for the unique experiences these guided trips provide. Andrew and all his guides focus on learning new skills, gaining a deeper understanding of the environment we are moving through, and providing a chance to challenge yourself physically and emotionally by being out there. -Bill F.

I came into the trip with a decent amount of backpacking experience but a nagging sense that I could get more out of my trips with a deeper skillset. Now, I’m confident in making the best of future trips this summer and beyond. Everything about the trip was excellent: the location was extremely scenic, the route was adapted well to the group’s wishes, the instruction was clear and helpful, and the group chemistry was strong throughout. I couldn’t have asked for more from my first (but definitely not only!) Skurka trip. -Estelle E.

Going on a Skurka trip was the best thing I did. It was a chance to backpack longer and farther than I have done on my own, in my dream destination. The guides take care to build a cohesive group and to teach skills that I didn’t even know I needed to learn. I can’t wait to go again on an even more challenging trip. -Kyle C.

I came away with more confidence that my husband and I could do larger stretches of off-trail hikes on our own in the Sierra. I loved that we took the opportunity to swim in lakes and cowboy camp nearly every night. It was a well-balanced trip with amazing guides and wonderful fellow hikers. -Carol K.

Awesome trip. Amazing guides. Spectacular route and views. Swam in many lakes (sometimes two in one day), saw countless others. 7 days of peace and joy. -Jamie J.

I recently took a guided trip with Andrew Skurka Adventures and it was exceptional. The trip planning and preparation materials were clear, comprehensive, and truly useful. From gear checklists to route maps and logistical advice, every detail was covered in advance. On the trail, the guides were outstanding. They were not only deeply knowledgeable but also approachable, encouraging, and great teachers. Their expertise elevated the whole trip experience. -Jonathan S.

Amazing time in the Emigrant Wilderness. Over half the trip was off-trail…with fantastic training in navigation (map, compass, and app) and route finding. Not at all hand-holding—let the group push as hard as they wanted. And a great, well-matched group. -David C.

My first Skurka trip met and exceeded all my expectations. If there is a place to come to learn how to travel lightly, safely, and well in the wilderness, Skurka is that place. -James J.

Andrew has assembled a world-class team of guides, catering to clients of all levels of fitness and experience. While their achievements are awe-inspiring (and a little intimidating), the guides are very approachable and freely share their vast, first-hand knowledge without hesitation. No matter where you are in your backpacking journey, you will come away smarter and better prepared having joined one of Andrew’s adventures. -Bob R.

This was a unique opportunity to get the cliff notes to a set of skills that would have taken me years and many wasted dollars to acquire on my own or through online sources. It was well worth the time and money to jump so far ahead in knowledge and experience in a short time. Now I can spend more time enjoying the outdoors more safely. -Kathy S.

The education provided in the fundamentals trips will benefit anyone new (or relatively new) to backpacking. This is an amazing opportunity to combine adventure and learning with the support of guides who are both knowledgeable and approachable. -Leanne R.

The trip was a very good experience from the classroom instruction, assignments, to the actual trip in the field. Andrew and Brian were amazing guides and the group worked well together. The whole experience was a great learning opportunity. I particularly enjoyed the navigation with cross-country travel. Very satisfied with the trip, thank you. -Damian G.

This guided trip provided exactly what was promised in the advertising: an adventure in magnificent wilderness spaces, with off-trail travel and a serious and valuable educational component. This was provided by two knowledgeable guides who tailored the experience to the skills and fitness of the group. We were challenged in ways that built confidence, but never felt beyond our abilities. I went in with high expectations and they were exceeded in all ways. I’m very grateful for the experience. -Richard H.

I’ve been on several Skurka adventures and every one of them has been different and exceptional. For me, the people make the difference—both the guides and the clients. They are why I return. -Dodger

My first trip with Skurka Adventures, an 11-day without resupply, exceeded my expectations for the amount of experience and confidence I gained. It was amazing how many tips and personal stories my fellow group members had, and the guides ensured there were plenty of opportunities to learn and put skills into practice. Time flew and by the end, I could have taken 1 rest day and come back for more! My main fear of running out of food has vanished and I feel much more capable of planning future trips on my own. Thank you team! -Sam L.

Andrew Skurka Adventure’s 11-day off-trail backpack far exceeded all my expectations. The guides were professional, attentive, and fun. They were flexible and gave our group choices so that we were able to tailor the route to best suit our group’s specific needs and desires. Instead of having us follow them through the wilderness, they put us in charge of navigation and route finding so that we were able to practice and hone those skills as individuals. I learned so much on so many levels—navigation, route finding, gear, meals, efficiency, foot care. I would highly recommend this company to absolutely anyone looking for an adventure and looking to further their skills. -Sherry B.

Year after year ASA provides an astonishing wilderness experience. It’s like nothing else. The people and the places simply can’t be beat. -Ben J.

This was a new style trip for me. Having been a multi-time alum I knew I was in good hands. Witt and Sam taught me how to literally climb mountains and I look forward to planning and executing similar trips in the future now that I have the confidence and training to execute! -Chad M.

Fourth trip with team Skurka and I’d happily sign up for another. I experienced a trip-ending injury and had to hike out. While that is a bummer, I did get to experience Sam and Witt manage the situation with professionalism and genuine consideration for my well-being as well as the overall interest of the group. Not that I’d endeavor to get injured again, I am comforted in seeing how a scenario like that played out. It’s easy to manage when all things are going well, it’s another to manage when things go sideways and I was happy to be led by guides that managed the challenge well. -Chris F.

I never thought I’d have a chance to visit places like these, let alone off-trail. I’m so grateful for the opportunity these trips provide, all with the added safety and camaraderie of a group. -Sam L.

If you’re on the fence about joining a Skurka Adventures trip, go for it! The instruction is top-notch, the route will take you to incredible places, and the guides will give you the insight to take your outdoor exploring to the next level! I went on a 5-day trip to Inyo and the collaborative environment the staff provided gave me the confidence to plan and execute my own off-trail route. You can watch all the YouTube videos you want, but learning from the guides and fellow clients helps push all the theory into practice. -Gordon S.

This course is comprehensive without feeling cookie cutter, and dynamic without feeling impromptu. It did a tremendous job closing the gap between my knowledge and experience. The guides were studs and gave me the confidence to put theory into practice. The amazing people and location notwithstanding, I can’t think of a better way to take that next intimidating step-up in backpacking. This program is robust, and I think Andrew should be incredibly proud of what he’s put together here. -Robert B.

I went in with a specific idea of what backpacking is that completely blew open—for me it was always about getting to a point, and the miles/elevation it took to get there, and only now do I realize there were so many other aspects to appreciate. I come away certainly learning that backpacking is in a lot about appreciating the finer things and taking care of yourself—through delicious food, careful planning, and always being mindful of where you are. Perhaps most important for me though, was that I was really able to find new ways to appreciate the outdoors, whether it was cowboy camping, or traversing passes that I wasn’t sure I was capable of before. About the group—as my first significant hike/backpacking trip in a group, I was worried about connecting and having to be a certain way to enjoy it all, but ultimately my takeaway was that it was really nice to feel the broader community of people who wanted to take that next step in getting out there—sometimes it can be easy to forget that we’re not alone! Finally, about the guides, it was almost intimidating to have folks as experienced and knowledgeable as them, but I always felt safe and encouraged to learn with ours. -Not provided

This trip exceeded my expectations in every way. I came into the trip with a simple goal to feel more confident on longer backpacking trips, and I came away with that and so much more. The Yosemite adventure took me from an hiker with multi-day backpacking experience on trails to a far more confident backpacker who is ready to tackle off-trail routes. The combination of the hours of preparatory work and experienced guides allowed me to be comfortable with the challenges of off-trail hiking while enjoying the beautiful vistas of Yosemite. My trip ended last week and I am already planning my next adventure. -Steven K.

I would happily do a dozen more trips with the ASA team if I get the chance to! -Gary T.

Even as a relatively experienced backpacker, I learned a lot and got to experience a new (for me) part of the Sierra. -Matt B.

You’ll come away with some great memories and enhanced skills. -Ed T.

My five-day trip in Sequoia National Park challenged me in all the ways that I hoped and then even more. I had several goals, including optimizing my gear and gaining experience with off-trail navigation and wayfinding. The process and approach to these trips is comprehensive and very intentional. The assignments and calls leading up to trip helped me decide on gear specifics with expert coaching, as well as practice my trip planning and route-building skills. Part of the secret is the extensive group building/matching process that the Andrew Skurka team goes through. On trail, our two guides Hunter and Kat were excellent as they encouraged the group to explore and test our skills. The route along the Sequoia-Kaweah Divide in the tableland region offered plenty of terrain and stunning views in all directions. Our group coalesced quickly and we learned a lot from each other. We left with memories and skills for our next adventure. Wherever you are, there is a trip and itinerary for you. List Skurka Adventure on your bucket list, it is so worth it! You will have the backcountry travel adventure, flora and fauna education, unforgettable experience, and gain lifelong friendship. -Jopin

I am both happy and sad to write this review—happy because I had an incredible trip and sad because I wish I was still out in the backcountry. I arrived as a beginner backpacker and five days later, I left feeling confident that I could plan and do trips on my own. The guides were phenomenal—so skilled, great teachers, such warm and lovely people, the scenery was beautiful, the group had a ton of fun together, and we all learned a lot. I knew I wanted to get into backpacking but was overwhelmed by it. This trip was a perfect foundation. -Meredith D.

I just hoped for solid instruction on backpacking and navigation skills. The experience turned out to be unexpectedly spiritual, fun, and thoughtful—all set in picture-perfect locations. -Can A.

I am a novice backcountry backpacker. Did a 5-day trip in the High Sierras. Really enjoyed every aspect of the trip. You can do a trip on your own or go out with a few buddies, but I don’t think you will nearly get enough out of it without going out with guides who really engage and teach you about the backcountry. Highly recommend for anyone who is just starting out in backpacking or seasoned backpackers. They have trips for all skill levels. -John P.

My husband and I had a memorable 5-day trip to celebrate our 25th anniversary. The pre-work was very helpful making the trip seamless. Our guides Joe and Melodie were the best, couldn’t ask for better guides that cared for us and gave us the knowledge we need to plan our future trips. We laughed so much and the bonds and friendships we made are true treasures. We enjoyed the beauty and power of the mountains, the sky, the waters and the daintiness of many wildflowers that I can now name. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts. We went places we never imagined we could go. Now, when I see a mountain I want to conquer it! -Esther P.

Where do I start? I have wanted to join a Skurka trip for several years but I never felt like I could make it happen. I had the opportunity of joining a trip at the last minute this year. The location was beautiful! I was impressed with the type and amount of off-trail travel we did. Both guides were very knowledgeable and truly enjoyed teaching and connecting with the group. All breakfasts and dinners were delicious and I am excited to add them into my meal rotation. I love that this program is learning intensive and designed to prepare you with skills you need to continue backpacking if you choose. If you are interested in backpacking but don’t know where to start, take one of these trips! -Caitlin J.

Such an amazing experience. The guides are patient, knowledgeable, and always on point. I can’t think of a better way to spend time in the wilderness than hanging out with helpful guides who are ensuring safe passage through potentially dangerous terrain and with fellow clients who are willing to share their experiences. -Paul F.

The route for this trip was exceptional in its remoteness and beauty. -Larry S.

My week in the Sierras was one of the best weeks—period—I’ve had in a very long time. I wasn’t surprised that I came away with a trove of new backpacking knowledge. What I didn’t expect was the level of solidarity and authentic connection a group of strangers could forge in just seven days of traipsing through the mountains together. A truly life-affirming experience, and maybe the best time I’ve ever had in the outdoors. I receive no compensation for saying this: if you have a bone-deep love for wilderness, I can’t think of a better way to spend your time and money. It’s an experience I’ll cherish forever. -Chart

If you want a top-notch backpack experience from beginner to signature series, Andrew Skurka’s trips are for you. The guides are experienced and navigate well. -Tracy H.

As a frequent High Sierra backpacker, I felt I had a good grasp on the range and how to experience it. On my 7-day guided trip, I got to explore a stunning and remote part of Inyo NF, improved my technical skills, and learned a new sense of style on how to plan a trip, approach routefinding, and camp and eat better than I ever had in the backcountry. It was an eye-opening experience and I learned lessons away that I will immediately implement on future trips. -Chris K.

The Skurka guided trips have taken my off-trail backpacking skills to a whole new level. The trips have shown me where some of my weaknesses reside and thus, provided a road map about what needed to be trained both physically and mentally. They’ve given me the opportunity to meet myself in a new way and build lasting confidence—allowing me to fully own my own strength and capability as a skilled, strong, aging woman ready to meet whatever life brings on or off the trail. The guides are exceptionally qualified, approachable, and deeply committed to teaching, supporting, and adapting as needed. The routes are thoughtfully planned and their ability to pivot when conditions change or the group needs to pivot is truly impressive. These trips have become a highlight for me. I’ve met amazing people who I hope to continue to hike with and built my confidence to pursue my own off-trail backpacking adventures. Most of all, they’ve strengthened my sense of personal accomplishment and resilience. -Laurie B.

Andrew’s program is nothing short of excellent. Our guides Joe and Christie were not only masters of the subject matter, but also a perfect balance of personalities. This trip exceeded my expectations in the terrain we tackled and the skills we learned and applied. I may or may not have cried a few times from the deep emotional impact this trip provided, but keep an eye on your Fritos around Stringbean, #Fritogate. -Scott C.

I had an incredible time on my 5-day Skurka team trip to the Sierras this summer. I learned a lot about off-trail navigation, and am looking forward to planning my own trips away from the crowds later this summer. The guides, group, and terrain were all incredible—it’s hard to ask for a better experience. I hope to make it back again next year! -Scott R.

The trip offered an opportunity to learn from elite guides in a fantastic landscape. I feel much more confident about my ability to traverse the backcountry than I did before. -Chris H.

Highly recommend these trips if you’re looking to build navigation skills and push your boundaries. I feel more prepared and excited to take trips on my own after getting a solid foundation on this trip. What other tour company will give you months of educational content and let you go off-trail and climb a pass over chunky talus? I learned a lot and thoroughly enjoyed the company. -Monica R.

Andrew Skurka Adventures absolutely fit the bill. I haven’t found another organization that educates backpackers so well. The ability to prepare in advance ways to avoid rookie mistakes or take your abilities to the next level under the guidance of very experienced guides was immeasurable. The guides were kind, encouraging, fun-loving, expert and most importantly shared their love for the outdoor experience. There is no better way to go! -Peg M.

This was my first ever guided trip! I got everything I hoped for and more: a physical and mental challenge, supported by passionate and caring guides and dedicated adventurers. I feel confident and restored. Feels like I was gone for more than 5 days! -Amy E.

This was my first Skurka trip and it was the best out of the several guided trips I’ve done. The planning curriculum does a great job in preparing you to learn to be self-sufficient in the field. I thought the group was very well-matched in terms of fitness/ability on the trail. The route itself was excellent and the field curriculum filled in several gaps for me that were missing about off-trail navigation and route-finding. I really enjoyed the company of the guides and the other group members. I definitely recommend these trips if your goal is to be able to plan and execute similar trips for yourself. -Kevin T.

Although I am a competent backpacker now, I love taking trips with Skurka; I am constantly refining my gear and skills that deepen my enjoyment of the outdoors. -Michael P.

One of the great strengths of the program is that the clientele really is seeking adventure. They are smart, resourceful, and GAME, with guides to match, which makes all the difference for a terrific experience. -Erin D.

This was my fourth (!) Skurka trip and of the eight clients on my Yellowstone seven-day backpack, seven were repeat customers, which speaks volumes for the quality of the experience delivered. We were in an isolated area of the park, with ample opportunity for off-trail navigation. The company was excellent, the guides were knowledgeable, friendly, and engaged, and our group had a really wonderful time. While we each were “hiking our own hike,” (more or less), we felt like the guides were paying attention and keeping us out of trouble. Learned a lot, had a great time in the backcountry—it was over too soon. -Doug R.

The Skurka guides are the highest level in the field and make sure the group is working well together and gaining skills while enjoying a backpacking trip in a phenomenal location. The time taken in matching groups through the application process makes all the difference as you end up with a team that consists of people your level or just a little bit higher than you to get you to stretch. I learned what I can and cannot do without on a backpacking trip to help me refine my future solo trips. I highly recommend a Skurka trip for anyone from a basic beginning backpacker to a very advanced backcountry traveler. -Diane D.

I learned new skills, refined old ones, and had a great time with great people on this trip. Moreover, I learned new ways to think through problems that I can practice on my own trips. I feel much more self-sufficient and capable of planning and executing a similar trip, but I would still gladly do another guided trip—just because it was fun and the guides and group were fantastic. -Emre S.

I loved the in-depth, forward-leaning process from the broad Skurka team! While I’ve done a number of backpacking trips alone, in just five days I learned to use my stuff better, more effectively, while soaking in that special experience both individually and as part of an amazing group. So bummed it’s over, but excited to do another one in the future! -Patrick R.

-Abby C.

Yellowstone is an exceptional trip. The geographical features and wildlife are amazing. Guides and route were awesome. Star-filled nights brilliant. -Lory

This is my second Skurka trip and it was even better than the first! I loved tackling the more advanced trek with a smaller group of ~6 awesome folks, and I reinforced my knowledge from my first trip plus more (naturalism tips from Jose, even more map guiding and off-trail guiding practice with Scott, and wilderness first aid training with Witt and Mikaela). I’ll continue to think of returning to a Skurka trip whenever I want to maintain or up-level my backpacking skills, in a beautiful place with great company! -Ella C.

My 5-day Yellowstone trip was challenging and engaging and provided me an opportunity to grow in both my logistical and physical skills to take on even longer backcountry trips in the future. I had many inspiring conversations with my guides and co-clients and made 7 new friends I can plan future trips with. -Aaron M.

I loved that my group was mostly my age and we all gelled well and quickly. The guides were once again exceptional in knowledge and so fun to be around. I can’t wait to go on another one. -Not provided

Outstanding experience with exceptional guides, highly recommend. Especially for first-time backpackers who are more interested in joining a group rather than learning on their own. -Annie B.

Anyone can pick up a backpack and walk into the wilderness—how safe, rewarding, and enjoyable that experience is depends a lot on planning, knowledge, and skill. An unforgettable adventure through Yellowstone’s Lamar Valley. Stunning terrain, incredible wildlife viewing including bison, elk, and grizzly bears. Expert guides made it safe, smooth, and truly wild. -Jim B.

Skurka guided hiking adventures are an excellent way to explore new areas. This is especially true for locations outside of your geographic comfort zone and where different animals or environmental conditions might be experienced. They help prepare the hiker for the journey and what might be expected on the trip. Highly recommend to new hikers or those seeking to explore hiking beyond their comfort zone. As an east coast AT section hiker, having the guides and pre-hike resources helped me to explore Yellowstone and Utah—two areas I would not consider hiking alone. Hope to continue my journey next year on additional Skurka adventures! -Tom I.

Another outstanding trip with Skurka Adventures. The guides were great and everyone in the group got along and helped each other. The wildlife and scenery in Yellowstone was spectacular. The off-trail routes were challenging but well worth the effort. -Tony S.

I’ve been on four Skurka median trips now, three of them were 11-day expedition trips, and have been very impressed with the caliber of guides as well as clients. I don’t know of a better way to engage with groups of backpackers that are so highly knowledgeable and passionate about backpacking gear, skills, and destinations. -Craig M.

My trip to Yellowstone with Skurka team was amazing. Both guides, Andrew himself and Tina were informative, friendly and fun, and they put together a great group of people. I learned a lot about backcountry and bear country hiking/camping safety and logistics. Pre-trip planning curriculum was extremely helpful. Meals were tasty with enough calories to fuel the day and easy and fast to prepare. When I twisted my ankle and fell behind the core group, one of the guides always kept me in eyesight to make sure I was okay. Andrew organized an amazing trip that I never could have done on my own—outstanding backcountry route and scenery, tremendous wildlife viewing, and an outstanding group of clients and guides made for a memorable experience! -Steve S.

This was my first trip with ASA and it exceeded all of my expectations, from start to finish. As a graduate of the PLAP course (for a Sierras hike I did in July 2025) I had a working knowledge of the planning curriculum, which definitely helped, but my instructors were also great at giving feedback on the various modules. The trip itself was absolutely incredible, and my goals (becoming more proficient at off-trail navigation and managing meals and food) were both met by a very long margin. I feel especially confident that I can navigate a route from start to finish using the tools I was given. Will definitely repeat with ASA on a different location, hopefully next year! -Thomas L.

Just completed my second trip and I will definitely be back for more. The way these trips match capabilities and fitness with your peers, then train you for the specific trip, and remove the complexities of meal planning, makes for a first-class experience with minimal time investment. The ideal means to drive a mental and physical reset, while meeting like-minded people, for those that cannot get away to hike as much as they would like. -Buddy S.

This was my first time backpacking and I couldn’t have asked for a better one. -Rick D.

As I told my team, you can call me “Pops” like my grand kids do if it helps because we had two Brads on this trip. This trip was very personal for me. After a few years off trail and a couple lousy years health wise, I was eager to test myself physically and mentally and use the experience as a benchmark to see if I can tackle a sierra high route next year. The trip location, conditions, interactions with my team mates exceeded my expectations. Yellowstone is incredible and I feel fortunate to have the experience. We saw more than our fair share of wild life, or the term Mega Fauna as our guide Andy liked to call it. An eagle perched above the river, a pair of wolves chasing a family of elk into the river, a herd of bison over 200 strong, and a lone wolf on the last mile of our hike! We were incredibly lucky. The terrain threw everything it had at us and I developed a healthy respect for the sheer vastness of the park and the term “blow downs”. Guides is too common a word for our “educators” Andy and Mikaela. Their well-rounded knowledge of backcountry survival and honestly just life in general impressed and inspired the entire group. Kudos to Skurka for discovering such excellent people. This isn’t a laid-back nature walk where the pack just follows the guides. As a team member, you are expected to learn, lead, participate, and give it all you’ve got. Our educators were there to catch us if we fell but gently pushed us to our limits. That takes a special skill and Skurka seems to have dialed this system down to where fitness and skill levels of team members are similar so no one feels left behind or unchallenged. All in all, one of the great experiences of my life, without a doubt. -Brad H.

This is my third trip with ASA and it was as wonderful an experience as my two previous trips. I’m still amazed at what a great job you do with training and matching people up with similar physical and technical abilities. -Jim K.

This was not your average guided backpacking trip…which is what drew me to it! These are the trips you go on if you want to learn and level up your game. It’s more like backpacking school! It was very empowering and educational which will help me go on bigger and farther adventures! Can’t wait until the next one! -Beth E.

The planning curriculum and the guidance on the trip itself systematically built up my backpacking confidence and my ability to plan my own trips and I am excited to keep going. -Eva R.

My fifth trip with Skurka Adventures in Yellowstone was probably my favorite overall because I felt the most prepared both mentally and physically. When I showed up early on the first day, I knew all I had to do was just let the trip happen and enjoy the ride. -Scott G.

As an avid hiker but beginner (but well read) backpacker, I found the trip perfect. The field work on the trip reinforced the pre-trip coursework, the group was great, and the guides excelled in teaching and making the group feel comfortable. Yellowstone was beautiful in September. My wife and I had a blast. -Bill M.

What I appreciate about Andrew Skurka Adventures, it is very apparent in every aspect that this whole Team wants you to succeed and enjoy the outdoors. No matter your skill level, you will gain knowledge, abilities, and enthusiasm. What I most appreciate is that from the first few minutes of interaction to the very end of the hike, you are made to feel like one of the family and this exudes from each interaction of the Team. -Taylor R.

Whether you have backpacked for years, or are just starting out, your life will be greatly enriched if you go on an Andrew Skurka trip! First, no matter how experienced you are, I promise you will learn many more helpful skills to add to your backpacking tool kit. Second, you will most likely be with a terrific group of people who all love to do what you do, will learn from them as well and, maybe, make a new friend or two in the process. The guides and the locations are superb. I just can’t say enough about the quality of the curriculum, the locations, and the routes. I just finished my third trip, and it was my best yet. It seems as though many of the trips have alumni. There is a reason for that. -Maria T.

I’ve been playing in the outdoors for over forty years. Taking a trip with Andrew Skurka’s guiding company proved to me that you can, indeed, teach an old dog new tricks! -Peter K.

Jeff and Nikki were remarkable on the Yellowstone Naturalist trip! We had the ideal combination of hiking, understanding plants, and looking for and observing wildlife. They were patient as guides when mistakes were made, and used everything, both good and bad, as teaching opportunities in a very positive way. I not only learned more about the environment and backpacking, but I learned from them how to be a better human, father, and husband. -David M.

Skurka Adventures has done it again: they provided amazing, exceptional guides and coupled it with great skill building, education, and a highly compatible, well-matched group of clients. -Rod
