Until last year, I knew of Steve Allen only through his definitive guidebook for the Escalante canyons of southern Utah, Canyoneering 3, which often reads like a scavenger hunt and which I consider to be a gold standard for guidebook writing — enough information is included to make forward progress and stay mostly out of trouble, but not nearly enough to undermine the sense of adventure. For me, Steve was a bit of a mythical character — I had never met him in-person, he’s not active on social media, and I’ve never even seen or heard an interview with him.
Steve and I recently connected over email, partly because of a video project he’s involved with, A Life in the Desert, which will be featuring Steve and the high desert canyon country that he has spent so much of his life exploring. We’ll thrilled to host him next week for a livestream to discuss this project, his life, and the lands.
