Scheduling iterations

Each year I release three iterations of the schedule. Iteration 1 goes live in November of the prior year, before we can secure all permits and travel logistics, and before we’ve received any applications.

Iteration 2 is released in mid-January, several weeks after the open application period ends. Versus Iteration 1, it’s been fine-tuned to reflect the number, interests, and skills of the applicants. At this time, we can lock in all details for Utah and Alaska.

Iteration 3 must wait until early-spring, when I can finally reserve wilderness permits for the High Sierra and Greater Yellowstone, and after land agencies have officially approved commercial permit applications.

* Waitlist length

To calculate this number, we divide the number of trips that are identical in four criteria (location, trip type, duration, and fitness rating) by the number of waitlisted applicants who are an appropriate match for these trips.

For example, suppose we have two trips that are: in Utah (location), Adventure-level (trip type), 5 days (duration), and Moderate (fitness rating). If we have one waitlisted applicant, the waitlist length would be 0.5. If we had two waitlisted applicants, the waitlist length would be 1.0. And if we had five waitlisted applicants, the waitlisted length would be 2.5.
