This spring Sierra Designs and I filmed seven instructional videos. The first was launched last week, and the remainder will air every other week through the end of the summer. I’ll update the links below when they become available:
- Map & Compass, Part 1: Adjust for declination & orient the map
- Map & Compass, Part 2: Find and transfer bearings
- My guyline system for tents and tarps
- Finding 5-star campsites
- Pooping in the woods
- Backpacking Dinner: Beans & Rice with Fritos & Cheese
- Starting a fire with an energy bar wrapper
This was my first attempt at providing instruction through video. Versus an in-person guided trip, I don’t think it’s as effective; but it costs much less (in this case, it’s free) and can benefit many more people. Versus written text, it conveys topics at least as well (if not much better) and commands roughly the same development time; but it’s an entirely different medium, with a distinct body of skill and equipment.
If you like what you see and want more, contact Sierra Designs through Facebook, Instagram, or wa******@si***********.com.
Did the how-to fire video ever materialize?
Yes, but I wasn’t particularly happy with it and it was never published.
