In the two months since the Planning Curriculum started, I hope that you feel as if you’ve already learned a lot. Learning will continue — and, probably, accelerate — when we get into the backcountry and start working through the Field Curriculum.
To give you a headstart on some of the more important or complex topics, I want to share some online tutorials. If you are on a 3-day trip, new to backpacking, or rusty, I’d especially recommend that you read or watch them.
We will give in-depth tutorials about the skills below, but if you’re on a shorter trip you will have fewer opportunities to master them:
Finally, here are a few location- or gear-specific tutorials:
- Fording creeks & rivers, which will be important in Alaska and California
- Early-season navigation, which will apply to California; and
- GPS watch settings, if you plan to wear a Suunto Ambit, Garmin Fenix, or similar
This list is not meant to be exhaustive, but it will at least get you started. If you have found other skill tutorials that you think would benefit the group, please share.
