Win two 70-oz collapsible Platy Bottles || Holiday Giveaway #4

Three more days to go!

Yesterday’s winner

Dave A. was the winner of the Esbit Cook Set. Congats!

Good luck today!

Today’s giveaway

I add 70-oz Platy Bottles to my kit in two instances:

  • In arid environments, when I need to load up on water to get through dry stretches, and
  • On casual trips, when I need a lot of water for long camps.

Platy Bottles are ultralight, weighing just 1.3 oz each. And they are collapsible, so they do not occupy any space in my pack when not in use.

The actual volume of a Platy Bottle is closer to 80 ounces, not the 70 ounces (2 liters) claimed by the manufacturer. I don’t have an explanation for the discrepancy.

A Platy Bottle will withstand several months of continuous use (which amounts to years for the average hiker), but eventually leaks will develop, usually around the threads or along the folds. For longer lasting performance or for institutional use (e.g. BSA), I would recommend the more durable MSR DromLite Bags, which are heavier and more expensive. Platypus Hydration and MSR are both brands in the Cascade Designs portfolio.

Thirty-five pounds of water, enough for a 2-day 70-mile haul across water-less Joshua Tree National Park. Cumulatively, the seven Platy Bottles weighed just 9.1 ounces.
