Nearly sold out: just 1 spot left on 2014 guided trips

If you can navigate off-trail in the East, you can certainly navigate on-trail. We'll teach you how.

Update, 9:30 am MDT. The spot has been filled. Additional registrations will be placed on the waitlist; it would not surprise me to have another cancellation over the next two months.

I thought I’d sold out my remaining 2014 trips on Friday, when there were three registrations for the remaining two spots, but on Saturday I received notice of a cancellation for a Backpacking Fundamentals session in May. That makes this the only spot available on any of my remaining 2014 trips, which cumulatively have 126 spots. (If you’d like a join a trip that is currently full, you can get on the Waitlist. Cancellations do happen; six people have already come off the waitlists this year.)

Here are the course details:

  • Allegheny Mountains near Whitmer, WV
  • Friday, May 23 through Sunday, May 25
  • 3 days/2 nights
  • Learning-intensive, intro-level
  • Up to 10 miles per day
  • Guides: me and Alan Dixon

The Backpacking Fundamentals course is ideal for first-time and beginner backpackers. It is helpful, but not required, that you have backpacked before. The goal of the course is to give you an extremely solid foundation of backpacking know-how: you will learn how to select proper equipment, plan your food, map your route, navigate, find great campsites, maintain your healthy and safety, use your gear properly, among other things. After this trip, you should feel very comfortable replicating a trip like it, and you will have the tools to do something more ambitious.
