The Winds began to form over 1 billion years ago when a magma chamber hardened underground and was subsequently uplifted. Rock layers above the hardened chamber gradually eroded away, exposing the erosion-resistant granite for which the Winds are well known. Ancient glaciers further sculpted the Winds that we enjoy today, notably its abundant alpine lakes and extensive alpine plateaus and peaks.
